1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-65. A magnificent Wire Edge High Relief with wonderful satiny golden-orange mint bloom color throughout. The 1907 High Relief with Roman Numerals is clearly a high water mark for superb coinage design in our history. The story begins with "Teddy" Theodore Roosevelt asked his friend Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign our gold coinage. Saint-Gaudens was late in his career as a famed sculptor and artist but took the challenge to heart. Roosevelt pushed him to create elegant coins like those from the Ancient Greeks, with bold three dimensional elements. As a sculptor Saint-Gaudens had extraordinary talent, but adopting complex three dimensional designs to modern coinage was extremely difficult. The elegant designs Saint-Gaudens created were not at all suited to coinage by modern hydraulic presses. Mint Engraver Charles E Barber was incensed that his designs were overlooked in favor of Saint-Gaudens. So the initial handful of double eagles were struck, each requiring several strikes from the heavy medal press at the mint, several strikes to bring up the intricacies of the design. These Ultra High Relief coins had no distinct rim and thus would not stack evenly. Modifications to the design were demanded, and this High Relief coin was next produced. Again, the extremely high devices required multiple strikes to bring up by the dies, and coinage production slowed to a crawl. Barber demanded further changes to reduce the depth of the designs that were so artistically brilliant, but a disaster for manufacturing quickly. The depth of the High Relief coins were greatly reduced, and coinage continued in late 1907 with the so-called flat relief coins as modified by Charles Barber. Nevertheless, here is one of the majestic High Relief coins that stands as a testament to the tenacity of President Theodore Roosevelt and the awe inspiring genious of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. A Premium Quality example just graded for the first time! (PCGS # 9135) Estimated Value $35,000 - UP
