Impressive Model of the USS Shenandoah, the First of Four Rigid Navy Airships Built Between 1922-23 at Lakehurst, New Jersey. One of the most impressive airship models we have ever offered, the USS Shenandoah acquired by a collector of airship history spanning over two decades. The model measures 80 x 12" (6'8" x 12") and rests on an oak cradle with USS Shenandoah in bold block letters set against a red, white and blue banner. The actual size of the airship was 680 feet by 78.9 feet, and flew 56 flights before crashing in Caldwell, Ohio on September 25, 1925 due to a violent thunderstorm. 14 crewmembers were killed including Captain Zachary Landsdowne but 29 crewmen did survive.

The model is made of balsa, cotton fabric, heavy stock paper, and styrofoam with exceptional precision. We note a couple of tiny blades missing from a propeller, but otherwise this model created some 25+ years ago for an exhibit is in excellent condition and again, quite impressive.
Local pick-up encouraged or arrangements must be made with an outside shipper which we can recommend. Estimated Value $600 - 1,200

Project Mercury Monument Dedication Folder, Photographs and Medal Presented to Bernard Hohmann. The Project Mercury monument was constructed by General Dynamics, the major contractor for the Atlas space launch vehicles used for the first manned orbital flights, and was dedicated near Atlas complex 14 on November 10, 1964. Principal feature of the stainless steel monument is a 13-foot-high astronomical symbol for the planet Mercury with the number 7 in the center of the symbol representing the nation's seven original astronauts - Carpenter, Cooper, Glenn, Grissom, Schirra, Shepard and Slayton. At the base of the monument is a bronze tablet bearing the commemorative inscription and a bronze medallion with the faces of the seven original astronauts appearing in high relief. Smaller copies of this medallion were made and presented to congressional, government and industry leaders who performed extraordinary roles in the success of the initial U.S. man-in-space orbital program.

The medallion is made by the Medallic Art Co. of New York, with the faces of the original first Seven Astronauts. On the reverse, at left, is the Project Mercury symbol based on the 13 foot stainless steel monument and the inscription: COMMEMORATING / FREE MAN'S / FIRST ADVENTURE / BEYOND THE / ATMOSPHERE / 1958-1963. Stamped on the edge is "Medallic Art Co. NY. Fine Silver" and the number "14" on the top edge. It is housed in its original case, which can be seen in the picture with Bernard Hohmann. Estimated Value $600 - 1,500

Mercury Atlas-6: Rare, Historic Umbilical Cable Section Used to Place Col. John Glenn in Orbit, 20 Feb 1962, On Frie. A segment of umbilical cable from Mercury-Atlas 6, measuring 2" long and 1" in diameter, which was connected to Friendship 7 during launch procedures. The cable provided all electrical power to the spacecraft up to the T-minus 30 second mark, at which time it was ejected.
Presentation to Bernard Hohmann is a standout given the length of the cable and has been encased in lucite for preservation. Lucite has discolored only slightly not uncommon given other examples of encased items we have seen ranging from patches to flown coins from the very early 1960s. This is an exceptional example of space from the earliest manned space program worthy of any level of collector. Estimated Value $2,000 - 5,000
