Rarely seen $2 1928D Misaligned STAR note. $2 1928D Red Seal Legal Tender Note Serial Number *03116295A grade PMG 45 Extra Fine. Last sold by Heritage @ Auction 141949 | Lot: 81213 | Dec 3, 2019 @ $156.00. PMG has noted "Misalignment Error" on the holder. Estimated Value $300 - 500
Bidders must have been sound asleep when this auction occurred as we see this wonderful banknote as being worth multiples of what it last sold for three years ago. Call a dozen dealers and asked them for a list of $2 Legal Tender STAR note errors in stock and you'll find ZERO. PMG notes minor stain on back. This note has a second error in that the margins are off-centered.
Remember that star notes were printed by the BEP to replace error notes….not create new ones. We repeat that you are bidding on a RED SEAL error.

$2 Red Seal with Dual Errors. $2 1953 Legal Tender Red Seal Note Serial #A08475207A graded PCGS 64 Very Choice New. This impressive piece displays two mistakes: 1) is a type II error on the back with a sliver of the upper note showing and 2) it has a small gutter fold. Estimated Value $800 - 1,500
We would strongly suggest you make an aggressive bid on ANY $2 red seal error notes you can acquire. There were so few made and they don't show up in dealer inventories but once in a very great while. They are underpriced at today's level, in our opinion.
Dual error note $2 RED SEAL.

Estimated Value $500 - 1,000
Just because you're seeing multiple $2 errors in this sale, don't be fooled into thinking this denomination is fairly common in the world of error notes. It just isn't The BEP prints at least 10 $1 denomination for each $2 note produced and the majority of the twos are shipped overseas. Two dollar bills are massively unpopular with retailers in The United States who don't have a slot in their cash registers for the $2 bill.

Front and Back Examples of Misalignments. $5 1950A FRN s/n D56599926A PMG 64 EPQ Choice Unc with back illustrating a Type II error with a portion of the bottom note showing and a $5 1977A s/n H50480215A PMG 65 EPQ Gem Unc with a sliver of the bottom note showing on the face. Estimated Value $500 - 800
A great way to illustrate how the BEP can create what is known as a Type II note, both on the front and the back. Don't under-estimate how rare the 1950A note is. As time goes on collectors are realizing that errors from the 1950 to 1950E series just don't show up very often at auction. The deep bold green ink on the reverse of this piece is truly striking.

You won't find notes like this in every error note collection. Competition is always strong when significant STAR note errors show up at auction. This is a very impressive example of a Misalignment mistake.
PMG notes "trimmed". We suspect that someone removed a tiny portion of the side margins to remove some previous damage. We feel that will have little impact on the value of this very rare note.

It is so difficult to locate small head fifties with major errors on them, and this and the previous lot are two exceptional examples.

Lot 454
A trio of $100 Small Head Misalignment Error Notes. The first note in this lot is quite striking for two reasons: the paper color is almost snow white and the face margins are significantly shifted to the right with a sliver of the next note showing. It is a $100 1981 FRN D01852038B grade PMG 45 XF, $100 1981A FRN PMG 35EPQ Choice VF s/n G106711016A with a sliver of the bottom note showing on the face, and a $100 1988 FRN #B54263406C with the face margins shifted far right, PMG 64EPQ. Estimated Value $800 - 1,400
$100 Error notes continued to be exceptionally popular with collectors. This may be due in part to the fact that perhaps 80% of the hundreds printed by the BEP each year are shipped to foreign central banks.

Lot 455
Due of Highly Desirable small head $100 errors. These two notes were printed years apart and yet display a similar mistake: $100 1988 FRN B87650831C PMG 64 with major margin shift on face to the right, and a $100 1993 FRN #F30091705A with an even greater margin shift on the face, again to the right with a sliver of the next note showing. Estimated Value $600 - 1,000
We have tried to be exceptionally conservative with our opening bid levels to encourage more individuals to participate in this wonderful sale.

Must have Type II $100 Big Head Invert Error. This $100 1996 FRN Serial # AK30793760A has been graded PMG 65EPQ Gem Uncirculated. The green and black inks are both extremely bold and a nice portion of the top note is featured on the face of this rarity. Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000
The fourth edition of the Bart Comprehensive Guidebook to United States Paper Money Errors does not list this type of error for a big head $100. We would suggest it has a value equal to the small head version of this error with inflation factored in, as the fourth edition was published some eight years ago. This would be an "R-7" class of error note.
Type II invert errors are considered "R-7"s on a scale of R-1 being the most common type of error to "R-9"s being the rarest, such double denomination errors. Our bid range estimate may prove low on this rarity.
