Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 361
$1 1935D SC Type I Inverted Overprint. $1 1935D Silver Certificate Serial #A61004909F graded PMG 25 Very Fine. For the assigned grade this is a really nice note. We believe our bid range will prove conservative. Estimated Value $500 - 800
They aren't printing any more Silver Certificate and we feel that over time you'll have more and more difficulty locating error notes printed on Silvers and Legal Tender notes.

$1 1935D SC Type I Inverted Overprint. $1 1935D Silver Certificate Serial #D242892466F graded PCGS 63 PPQ Choice New. The face of this note has 65 centering while the back is just a bit skewed. It deserves a higher grade in our opinion. Estimated Value $1,200 - 2,000
High grade Silver Certificate error notes are, in our opinion, a steal at today's price levels. You'll be hard pressed to find a better looking 3rd Overprint Error than this and the next note in today's Black Horse Collection auction.

Type II $1 1985 Inverted Overprint with accompaniments. This lot is one of the most interesting Error Notes we've ever handled. It contains a PMG 65 Gem Unc $1 1985 Type II Inverted Serial Number E15860706 and two prior and three following bookend notes, all graded 64 to 66 by PMG. Estimated Value $800 - 1,500
Also included in this lot is the wooden "paddle" known as the end label, encapsulated by PMG that starts with $1 1985 FRN serial #E158600001A. The first and last notes are included, serial #s E158600001A PMG 64 and E145684000A PMG 63. Why PMG left off the EPQ designations on these slabs is beyond my vision capabilities.
A Repeater Serial Numbered note contained within this 4000 note brick serial #E15861586A PMG 65 Gem Unc is included in this lot as well. This ten note set and the next lot would be a real centerpiece of an error note collection.

Besides the error note, also included in this lot is the wooden "paddle" known as the end label encapsulated by PMG that starts with $1 1985 FRN serial #E158600001A. Gorgeous $1 1981A FRN Type II Invert. $1 1981A FRN B21298503B graded PMG 66 EPQ Gem Unc. This is one special note for multiple reasons. BOTH the front and the back of the note are considered errors. The front illustrates the Type II error with the top note showing and a major shift. Estimated Value $800 - 1,400
The back of this note is badly mis-centered making this a double error. A trace of the next note is visible on the upper back margin. A strong bid is suggested to land this exceptional error note.

Both the front and the back of this great error note exhibit a small portion of the note on top of it. There may be a tiny corner tip fold on the upper left portion of this note that caused the 58 EPQ grade, but it sure looks more like a 65 EPQ note to us.

Incredible Gem $2 1976 FRN 3rd Overprint Error. An amazing error note on an ultra difficult denomination. This $2 denomination would be the key to completing a $1 - $100 denomination set of 3rd overprint errors. It is a $2 1976 Federal Reserve Note serial #E50425178A graded PMG 66 Gem Unc. It is a spectacular Type I Inverted Overprint, with extra bold green seal and serial numbers inverted. Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000
This and the $50 denomination are so very difficult to locate. Price isn't the issue when looking for these rarities. Supply is the only challenge. You can call a dozen respected paper money dealers looking for a note like this type of $2 error and all will tell you."good luck". Take a look at the chart below that shows the quantiles of different denominations printed by The Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
A note like this only comes along once every few years. We recommend you forget the guidebook as respects to what this note is worth.

$5 1974 FRN PMG 64 EPQ Inverted Overprint. $5 1974 FRN s/n H19854550B graded PMG 64 EPQ. This is a Type I Inverted Overprint and is as fresh as the day it was printed. The $5 denomination has historically been printed in much smaller quantities than the $1, $20 and $100 denominations. (See chart above.). Estimated Value $800 - 1,200
There is a relatively small premium for the $5 denomination in the industry standard guidebook to United States Paper Money Errors (by Frederick J. Bart). We would suggest that due to the fact that the BEP prints only about 1/4 the amount of $5 notes vs. $1 notes on average over the past decade, that the $5 denomination should bring more than it often does.

1985 $10 3rd Overprint Error. PMG has graded this beautiful $10 1985 FRN A37206603B as 55 About Uncirculated. Terrific side margins adorn this Type II note, and it appears two or three grades better than the one assigned. Estimated Value $700 - 1,000
Like the $5 denomination error in the previous lots, this $10 mistake is significantly more difficult to locate than the $1 and $20 denominations. Combined with the fact that the BEP will never again produce this small head design, it would not surprise us to see the value of these errors continue to rise well into the future.

1985 $10 FRN 3rd Overprint Error. PMG has graded this beautiful $10 1985 FRN C11897696B as 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated. Great side margins adorn this Type II note. A section of the note on top is featured on this Type II note's portrait side. Estimated Value $900 - 1,500
Gem small head error notes are, in our opinion, significantly under-valued. The fourth edition (but soon to be revised) Bart guidebook shows a value of $850 in Gem CU condition. That valuation is eight years old, and should prove ultra conservative in today's market. We suspect in ten years that price will look like a steal for this note.

$20 small head inverted overprint. This $20 1995 FRN Serial Number I18658841A with its 3rd Overprint Upside Down has been graded PMG 55 EPQ About Uncirculated. It is to this cataloger the most striking of the four $20 errors of this kind, in today's sale. Estimated Value $700 - 1,100
Of the four Type II $20 Inverted Overprints in today's Black Horse Collection auction, this one is the most pronounced. There is a larger portion of the top note showing on this mistake on both the front and the back.
We'd wager that in ten years you'll look back on today's prices for these small head errors and say: "I sure wish I had bought these errors notes back in 2023".

$50 small head errors are in huge demand and when they show up in dealer inventories, quickly sell. This high grade fifty will be subject to significant competition in today's Black Horse Collection auction.

$2 and $50 errors are exceedingly difficult to locate. We can't stress enough that when the opportunity to acquire an attractive example comes by, the wise buyer will snatch it up.
We remind collectors that many of the best error notes in this sale will be bought by dealers, who strongly feel they got a bargain. They will in offer them back to the public at higher prices.

$50 1996 FRN green seal & serial numbers inverted. $50 1996 FRN bearing serial # AL82537700B graded PMG 40 Extra Fine. Type II $50 Inverted Overprints are much sought out by collectors and when one shows up it rarely makes it to auction. Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,800
This note faces up beautifully with the back showing the usual XF folds. If you're looking for a $50 Type II invert that won't cost you $3000, this is the perfect example for adding one to your collection.
Since the re-design of the $5 - $100 starting with the $20 1996 FRNs, it would appear that the BEP has been making fewer mistakes in the printing process. Hence the prices for "big head" mistakes remains very strong.
