It is the same banner that led him to victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. Theodosius II, 402-450 AD. Gold Solidus (4.49g). Mint of Constantinople, AD 425. Helmeted and cuir. bust three-quarter facing to r., holding spear and shield. Reverse: SALVS REI PVBLICAE, officina mark S. Theodosius II seated facing (on l.) and Valentinian III, a much shorter figure, stg. facing (on r.), both in consular robes, each holding mappa and cruciform sceptre, star in upper central field, mint mark CON OB in ex. S-21143; DOC 375; RIC X, 233-6. Bold strike on a huge flan (22 mm) thus overflow (cud) of metal about the outside borders. Intensely lustrous. NGC graded Choice AU, Strike: 4/5, Surface: 5/5, die shift. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP Issued in commemoration of Theodosius ' eleventh consulship and Valentinian's first.
