Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1653
1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. NGC graded MS-63. Nearly untoned and well struck. A very popular coin with choice surfaces and the expected bold strikes which were required to bring up the incredible designs of Saint-Gaudens. The depth of the central device of Liberty and the eagle on the reverse required some six to eight strikes to fully strike up the uppermost points on each coin, making production, shall we say slow and laborious. The coiners and supervisors said enough, and soon a greatly reduced relief was adopted in late 1907 and coinage continued with a single strike required from the dies for the reduced relief coinage. However, this majestic High Relief stands as a testament to what was possible to be achieved by the determination of President Roosevelt and the designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens who pushed the Mint beyond their limits to strike these incredible works of art that remain unsurpassed in elegance and artistic merit. Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
Ex The Inverness Collection.

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded AU-50. Nicely toned with sharp wire rims showing on the obverse. A few minor reverse edge nicks from long ago careless handling. The boldness of the strike is quite evident and the three dimensional characteristics that define this elegant and artistic triumph are intact (PCGS # 9135) Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,000

1907. Flat relief, Arabic numerals. PCGS graded MS-65. A hint of gold tone with the usual greenish gold luster dominating the surfaces. First year of issue, and struck just after the Mint finally gave up on producing the incredible High Relief coins of 1907. This is a tough grade to find at the gem level for the 1907 Flat Relief design. Excellent surfaces and strong golden eye appeal (PCGS # 9141) Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,200

1909, 9 over 8. PCGS graded MS-63. Fully untoned example. Liberty's knee is semi flat. Some minor marks in the fields as expected for the grade. The overdate feature is sharp and this is a rarely seen mint blunder. The overdate was created by a hubbing error, so the 8 is nearly as prominate as the 9. There are precious few overdates in any gold series, and this is one of the latest known from the 20th Century. An impressive example for the specialist (PCGS # 9151) Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,600
