Wright, Frank Lloyd: Rare Autographed Copy of "An Autobiography, Frank Lloyd Wright" First Edition, Scarce (1867-1959) One of the most important architects of the 20th Century who also proved a fine writer and educator. Offered is a very scarce signed First Edition copy of his autobiography published in 1932. Wright has simply signed his name at top of front end paper, no inscription. Inside front cover is signed by R. Van Buren Livingston (tape lift near his name, likely a removed book plate) who owned this autobiography and well known for many mid-Century homes from the late 1940s -60s in California, many recognized of historical note.
Condition of book. Housed in its original slip cover know it is in rough condition. The autobiography itself has very clean interior pages and photos with no issues, the striking gilt black and red Wright design on front cover are without scrapes and stains, with the same excellent condition to the back cover. What is at issue is the spine, inexplicably it is missing but clearly worthy of restoration.

Napoleonic Wars -- Collection of All 26 Marshals of France Appointed by Napoleon Between 1804 and 1815. Marshal of France, or Marshal of the Empire, was a title which had been abolished in 1793 but was reinstated by Napoleon in 1804. He appointed 26 Marshals between 1804 and 1815. Each of them is represented in this lot by a signed item. Bonaparte, Napoleon: Emperor of the French and one of History's Most Celebrated and Controversial Leaders. Letter Signed and Dated 1806 (1769-1821) Napoleon Bonaparte or Napoleon I without question one of the most notable military and world leaders in history. He crowned himself emperor on Dec. 2, 1804. Manuscript letter signed "Nap" as Emperor, 1½ pp, in French, 9 x 8", St. Cloud, April 16, 1806. To M. Mollieu, his finance minister, concerning the budget. In part: "I am returning the bill of the revenue of the Public Treasury for the last eight months of 1806. It is my intention that you consider it with the memorandum you gave me yesterday and that you add to it the status as of the first of April that encompasses the bills to be paid and the credits you need to collect. I believe then that this report should be for nine months….this should give me an idea of the condition of my affairs…" Choice condition.

Also included is an ALS by Charles Tristan Montholon, Marquis de Montholon who joined Napoleon in exile on St. Helena with many historians making a case that Motholon poisoned Napoleon. ALS is dated Paris, April 1925 and is in French. Estimated Value $800 - 1,500

Collection of 27 British Officers, Signed Letters and Free Franks from The Napoleonic Wars: The Peninsular War and Trafalgar. Very impressive collection taking years to build of a great many British generals and Naval officers in command during the Napoleonic Wars:

1.) Peninsular War (1808-1814) ALS by General Sir David Bird (dated 1819). Paymaster receipt signed November, 1816 by General Robert William O' Callaghan in excellent condition plus 13 free franks signed by William Beresford, George Ramsay, Kenneth Howard, William Henry Clinton, Frederic French, Stapleton Cotton, Henry Harding, James Erskin, Edmund Phipps, Robert Trefutis Miles Nightingall, Sir George Nugent and Charles Gordon Lennox all in excellent condition.

2.) Battle of Trafalgar (October 1805) Significant Naval Battle lead by Nelson. Thomas Mastersman Hardy Nelson's Flag Captain, ALS written between 1809-1812 while Hardy was serving as Flag Captain to Admiral George Cranfield Berkely requesting "the battleship Bruin embark from Almada" in excellent condition, Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Francis ALS dated October 1814 ALS who served with Nelson and at Trafalgar captained the H.M.S. Neptune, the third ship in the weather line. Letter is to Captain Robert Mitford as to why declined Lord Melville's offer of the command in India and in superior condition. Cuthbert Collingwood, 2nd in Command to Nelson at Trafalgar signed baptismal certificate for his son, Edward, March, 1787. Edward Codrington, Captain of the Orion at Trafalgar, signs his approval by a purser's note to supply the use of the HMS Blake for "7840 gallons of beer in Butts" in 1810. Richard King, Commander of the HMS Achilles at Trafalgar, an ALS dated 1798 to Admiral Charles Thompson Bart regarding orders for a Court Marshall returned while away at sea. Thomas Dundas, Commander of the HMS Naiad at Trafalgar under direct orders of Nelson. Signed salutation dated Sept. 30, 1834. Sir Eliab Harvey Commander of the HMS Temeraire, made famous by a stunning painting by J.M.W. Turner and his penchant for gambling and sword play. Letter signed to Sir Francis Freeling regarding the appointment of a new postmaster dated 1821

3.) Rear Admiral Robert Pamplin, St. Helena Pamplin had risen to the rank of rear-admiral and in November 1816 was appointed commander-in-chief on the Cape of Good Hope and St Helena station where he was responsible for the naval forces enforcing the captivity of Napoleon on the island. and excellent ALS outlining to a Captain Rennie regarding the inventory and overhaul of the HMS Tees. Collection of Generals from the Late 1700s to Early 1800s, Letters Signed including John Rogers US Naval Commander & Sigismund Löw Geman Legion. Fine collection of eight (8) autographed letters/letters signed by notable generals and commanders from the very late 1700s to the early 1800s.
John Rogers US Naval Commander during Quasi-War (1798-1800) aboard the USS Constellation and involved in capturing L'Insurgence and brought back to the US. Letter signed regarding a request by the Secretary of Navy for the quantity of lead Sigismund Löw, ranking General in the King's German Legion and served on Wellington's staff during the Peninsular Wars. Karl Philipp, Fürst zu Schwarzenberg ALS (oders) to Lt. Marshal Count Fanz Orisini-Rosenberg sometime mid 1806 regarding the structure of his various military units. Lengthy document, excellent condition. Francisco de Quiros Marino, VI Marquis de Campo Sagrado, was a Spanish soldier and politician, Minister of War from 1815 to 1817 and several times Captain General of Catalonia letter signed dated 1826. Claude-Anne de St. Simon, Spanish Field Office Saint-Simon was instrumental in winning the final great battle of the Revolutionary War. In late August 1781, he arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in command of some 3,500 French soldiers. They joined the much smaller American army under Lafayette and helped keep British general Cornwallis pinned at Yorktown. Letter is dated 1776 and in near pristine condition. Paul Dimitrievich Kisselff, Staff Officer of Alexander 1 and State Counsel of the Russian Empire letter signed, no date or translation. Count Franz Kinski, Austrian General and Commander of the Imperial Austrian Army manuscript letter signed April 1791 as Commander directing the movement of troops against the French Revolutionary Army. Superb condition. Ferdinand Carl Joseph second son of the Archduke Ferdinand and former General of thousands of troops. ALS written in 1817 as Governor-General which sets for the procedures to be followed in notifying the Austrian Court of judicial personnel in Hungary. Excellent condition. Estimated Value $400 - 800

Battle of Waterloo: Letters Signed and Free Franks by the Commanders Who Defeated Napoleon; Duke of Wellington, Gebhard Blücher + 5 More. The Battle of Waterloo in 1815 was fought in what is now Belgium which marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The French Army under command of Napoleon was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: A British-led coalition under the command of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington and a larger army under the command of Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher.

1.) Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, 4pp Letter, dated Oct. 4, 1811 signed to Sir Charles Stuart, unofficial minister/spy for England to the court of Portugal between 1809-1815 and later Ambassador to France and Russia regarding the procedures when a British soldier is accused of an offense in Portugal. Further Wellington outlines the conditions and issue of Court Martial. Letter is signed Wellington, in excellent condition and has compelling content.

2.) Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher signed daily ration receipt dated "Breslau March 31th 1812 3¼ Metzen of oats, 3lb hay, 4lb straw. Receipt for supplies handed over to His Excellency the General of the Cavalry, Blucher from the local magazine and signed G. Blucher General of Cavalry" Lot also includes engraving of both Wellington and Blücher.

3.) Five signed free franks; Edward Paget, Commander Heavy Cavalry, Fitzroy Somerset Aide de Camp to Wellington, Charles Colville, Commander 3rd Infantry Division at Waterloo, Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge Commander All British Cavalry and Robert Edward Somerset, Commander Household Cavalry at Waterloo. "Various Dresses of the Indians of North America with their Weapons of War": Interesting engraving published in 1780 illustrating the costumes, weapons and other items used by North American Indians. The tribes identified include the Chippewa and the Naudowessie. Buchanan, James and William Howard Taft: Two Autographed Letters Signed, One Free Frank by James Garfield. James Buchanan (1791-1868) Autographed letter signed while serving as Congressman from Pennsylvania. Free franked letter dated January, 1827, boasts two signatures of Buchanan and one secretarial. 1p folded 10 x 16" with soft folds visible from being folded three times to 3 x 4½" with wax seal remnant still visible. Letter addressed to Samuel Dale Esq. expressing the difficulty of a petition for a Joseph Nielson, brother of the Register of the Treasury in Kentucky, given the current session of Congress. In very fine condition, both signatures of Buchanan are clean and bold.

William Howard Taft (1857-1930) Autographed letter signed dated August 7, 1898 while still acting as Chief Justice of the Unites States. On simple note paper addressed to a George Leonard in Cincinnati, Ohio where he lists several checks enclosed for certain individuals, likely personnel employed for his home there. 8 x 5", original envelope included with Taft's signature in excellent condition.

While there were special editions printed with his signature, this is a third trade edition signed. Autograph is quite bold; "Cordially Calvin Coolidge" on the verso of the frontispiece portrait. Page has separated cleanly from spine but with no tears, chips or stains. Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) Envelope franked "M. Fillmore" in upper right corner, addressed to Mrs. Summer care of Hon Nathan Appleton Boston, Mass. Remnants of wax seal on verso. Mrs. Summer may be the wife of Senator Charles Sumner. Light soiling otherwise very good.

Warren G. Harding (1865-1923) 29th President of the Unites States. Typed letter signed "W.G. Harding" thanking R.H. Minteer for his friendly sentiments and hoping "that you will be at Columbus, even though, like myself, you have no direct vote on the floor, I know you can greatly influence some of those who have". Hoover, Herbert and Harry Truman: Typed Letter Setter Signed as Commerce Secretary, 1927 and TLS as President, 1952. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) Typed letter signed as US Secretary of Commerce, on Department of Commerce letterhead and dated May 26, 1927. Hoover has written to a Judge James H. Duffy a letter regarding the issue of traffic fatalities and the role of law enforcement in mitigating those fatalities. He notes the spike in these incidences due to the increases in heavy motor traffic as well as the potential for more over Summer. Blind embossed stamp seal by the Justice of the Peace for Deerfield Township, Illinois, is visible in lower left likely upon receipt of letter. Very fine with toning in three spots likely being filed with news clippings.

Harry Truman (1884-1972) Letter signed as President thanking a good friend and donor for his holiday gifts of foods, sweets, cigars and his support "during the the years of my incumbency (which) has meant a great deal to Mrs. Truman and me." 9 x 14" folded light green White House letterhead. To visit the US Senate Chamber, one must stop by one's Senator's office to obtain a pass. They are almost always stamped with a facsimile signature. However in special cases, a senator may choose to hand sign. Such was the case for a Mrs. Martha B. Cooper with "John F. Kennedy" hand-signing in black fountain pen ink. The book itself is filled with beautiful color photos, past and present (early 60s). Jacqueline Kennedy was responsible for the first White House Guidebook and her facsimile letter appears after the Kennedy dedication page. This was one of the first copies of the new guide off the press and was signed by a president proud of his wife's accomplishment - the guide itself and her refurbishment of historic rooms pictured in the guide.

Nancy Reagan (Davis) and Gary Merrill Signed Vintage Original Still from the 1958 Film "Crash Landing". James Spence Letter of Authenticity. B-movie drama, one of the early iterations of what later became known as disaster films which starred Merrill and Davis (Reagan) and directed by Fred Sears, famous B-Film director who knew how to make films fast and on shoe-string budgets. Film was based on a real life ditching at sea of a Pan-Am flight in 1956.

32 15th Century Incunabula, Beautifully Archived Collection Each With Author's Name, Printer, Location, Year Published, References and Notes. Excellent collection of 15th Century incunabula whether a book, pamphlet, or broadside that was printed in the earliest stages of printing in Europe, up to the year 1500. This collection runs from 1474 to 1500. All are in very fine condition with many being quite choice. The consignor enjoyed thoroughly cataloguing these pieces, researching them and then creating a fact sheet for each one. Most are contained in leather bound folio but the larger pieces are sleeved in a stay-flat. Authors include: Saint Augustine, Lombardus, Capreolus, Durand, Lacantius, Biblia Latina, Forentinus, Merula, Ebendorfer, Passau, and more. Johnson, Lyndon Baines: ~100 Vintage Original AP and UPI Press Photos of LBJ, The First Lady and Family During Presidency from the Boston Herald (1908-1973) One of the most significant US Presidents of the 20th Century, his legacy still being evaluated and re-evaluated, Robert Caro's books probably being the most celebrated. But Ladybird Johnson is also having a bit of a renaissance with the new biography by Julia Sweig. The two feature prominently in these historic photos by AP and UPI. Just at 100 vintage original photos and so many of them burned into memory and history. Fantastic images of Johnson campaigning, meeting world leaders, dramatic images of him speaking and there are several photos of note about Johnson's dogs including Him and Her. (Johnson caused something of an outrage when he picked up Him by it's ears.) There are also wonderful images of Ladybird as well as daughters Lynda and Luci who also found themselves in the news being First Family. Most photos are 8 x 10 with several cropped for publication as is the norm. Almost all have stamps of the photo services on verso with typed info identifying the news within the photo. Mussolini (1883-1945) "Il Duce (Leader) led the National Fascist Party and was Prime Minister of Italy from the fascist coup d'état in 1922 to his deposition in 1945 and executed soon thereafter. As dictator of Italy and founder of fascism, Mussolini inspired and continues to inspire far-right totalitarian rulers. Vittorio Emanuele III (1869-1947) reigned as King of Italy from 1900 until his abdication in 1946. Outstanding collection of 10 signature by British Prime Ministers from the late 18th Century to the Early 20th Century in excellent condition. Included are:
1.) Robert Walpole, widely recognized as the first Prime Minister of Britain, serving 1721-1742 signing with other notables including the Lord of Treasury George Arenden and politicians George Dodington and William Clayton clearly lifted from a single page document. There is a corner tear in the upper left corner that in no way impacts any of the signatures.
2.) William Lamb served 1834 again 1835-1841. Signed free franked panel signed as Melbourne (Lord Melbourne)
3.) Robert Peel served 1834-35 again 1831-1846. Signed free frank panel as Robert Peel
4.) John Russell served 1846-52, again 1865-1866 TWO signed pieces": A note addressed to "His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury is The Chairman, Ecclesiastical Commission" signed as Russell and a free franked signed by John Russell.
5. William Gladstone served 4 times as Prime Minister, 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, 1892-94. Signed free frank with wax seal intact signed W. Gladstone.

Wilhelm II, German Emperor (Kaiser), King of Prussia Signed Portrait Photo Dated 1937 (1859-1941) Wilhelm II was the last Kaiser and King of Prussia abdicating after inept diplomacy and disastrous defeats on the Western Front in 1918. This marked the end of the German Empire and the House of Hohenzollern's 300-year reign in Prussia. Ultimately he left Germany to live in exile in the Netherlands until his death. 8½ x 7" portrait photo on heavy stock mounted on mat board where Wilhelm has signed Wilhelm FR and dated 1937. US Supreme Court Justices: Oliver W. Holmes, Levi Woodbury, John H Clarke, Antonin Scalia, Antony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, Wm. Brennan. Collection of letters and autograph of US Supreme Court Justices:
1.) Levi Woodbury: Free franked ALS dated 19th Dec. 1843 Washington City and letter is actually in response to a request for his autograph.
2.) Two covers addressed by Oliver Wendell Holmes to socialite Elizabeth Hine Cates of Youngstown, Ohio. Holmes well known for keeping correspondence with a great number of women on a social level.
3.) John H. Clark : Very long ALS also to Mrs. Elizabeth Hine Cates, here he writes with a heavy heart the passing of his sister, her decline in health and her death. Dated April 11, 1921, Washington D.C. on Supreme Court note paper. The letter comes with a 1½ page typed transcription.
4.) Antonin Saclia, a typed letter signed to a lawyer and friend in Miami, disappointed he did not catch in pompano on his fishing excursion, and that his assistant is scheduling a meeting with the YMCA. Scalia also adds that the lawyer instruct his assistant in how to spell Maureen! Signed informally Antonin and dated June, 1st, 1990 on Supreme Court letterhead.
5.) William Brennan thanking consignor of this collection for his nice note, dated March 29, 1984. on Supreme Court letterhead
6.) Clarence Thomas signing boldly a 4½ x 6" note card with Supreme Court of the US, Chambers of Justice Clarence Thomas printed along top.
7.) Antony Kennedy signing a 5 x 8 photo.

Lanseer, Sir Edwin Henry: Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, ALS Referencing Her Majesty (1802-1873) Lanseer. 2pp on personal stationery addressed St. John's Wood Road N.W. dated May 16, 1865. Lanseer writes "My dear Sir, I am not able to give attention to anything till after the 19th (when Her M goes North) - for whom I am working against time. I will take my chance of finding you and your guest."
Lanseer, proved a master of painting animals in every heroic form imaginable and became immensely popular with every level of society. He famously posed Queen Victoria and her servant, John Brown and a horse for a photograph which became the basis for the chalk drawing HER MAJESTY AT OSBORNE IN 1866 which resides in the Royal Collection. Dickens, Charles: Fine Collection of a Holograph Sentence, a Handwritten Note and Two Addressed Covers. Also Two Related Pieces. Charles Dickens, likely the greatest novelist of the Victorian Era a collection of his handwriting and other pieces: A holograph sentence, two addressed covers, one with his wax seal on verso and one note to Mrs. Bryan W. Procter all clearly in his hand but none with his signature. Holograph sentence reads "and all not be forgotten in their practices". Also included is an ALS by Dickens' son Henry Fielding Dickens on letterhead imprinted 8 Mulberry Walk, S.W. dated 1927 who authored "Memories of my Father" writes to a gentleman declining to write an intro for a book. Also included a four page letter written by George Dunlop Leslie who recalls his father and Dickens engaged in an art deal. Leslie sent these recollections to British wood-engraver, author, and illustrator, Frederick George Kitton, best known for illustrating and editing the works of Charles Dickens. Signatures all Three Beautifully Presented.
Collection of three authors/poets signatures.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (his son, Jr. was the celebrated Supreme Court Justice) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. Beautiful signature on a calling card dated Boston, Feb. 1st, 1881 1½ x 4½" and framed to with photo 15 x 10½".
Archibald Joseph Cronin, also a physician author best known for his books about miners, his greatest triumph, "The Citadel". Extremely bold signature in red wax pencil on woven paper 9 x 6" framed to 12½ x 9½" in gilt wood frame.
Edwin Markham Popular poet of the early 20th Century, his best known work, "The Man with the Hoe" was also the author of the poem "Lincoln, the Man of the People" that was selected to be read (by Markham) at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial with 100,000 present at the event and over two million on the radio. Sandburg, Carl; Literary Giant of the 20th Century, ALS, Handsomely presented (1878-1967) Carl Sandburg enjoyed one of the most celebrated and lauded career of the the 20th Century. He was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes, two for poetry, one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln and whose impact on American literature and history is almost without peer. ALS executed in pencil on hotel stationery dated February 8th (no year) Northhampton, Mass. to a Mr. Peffer on arriving in NYC at Grand Central asking him to meet him there or if not, at his publishers, Harcourt Brace & Co. Signed "Faithfully Carl Sandburg". Examined in frame, note was folded three times, with a slip of tape at fold line under Peffer. Otherwise very clean and exceptionally legible with a bold signature.
