Lot 363
1866. Rays. NGC graded Proof 66. A nice untoned example with sparkling bright surfaces, frosty devices and rich eye appeal. This is the first year of issue and a date which is rarely found so well preserved, even in Proof grades as normal handling reduced the majority of proofs well below the gem grade level. This one somehow survived in incredible PR-66 condition, with its delicate fields and devices virtually as struck so long ago. Pop 26; Only 6 finer at NGC, 3 in 63 star, 3 in 67; 8 finer in 66+ at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
From the Blackhorse Collection.

1866. NGC graded MS-64. Lightly toned and mostly nickel bright. The date is repunched low on this first year of issue of the new copper-nickel coin, which was destined to replace the tiny silver "half dime" then in circulation since the opening months of the Philadelphia Mint in 1792. This new combination of base metals (instead of semi-precious silver) employed a composition of copper at 75% blended with nickel at 25%, and the nickel color proved dominate and these coins are nearly white in color rather the reddish brown as one might expect from the copper alloy. Estimated Value $550 - 600
From the Blackhorse Collection.

1867. Rays. NGC graded MS-64. Nice light toning. A scarce early Shield nickel, and in strong demand as a type coin with the Rays on the reverse. Add to this the quality here at the near gem grade, precisely what most collectors desire but seldom get a chance to find all these qualities in a single coin. Estimated Value $700 - 750
From the Blackhorse Collection.
