The Benson Collection of U.S. Coins, Part 2

$20 St. Gaudens

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2225
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64. A beautiful example of this, our most popular coin. Remember this is fairly close to the way St. Gauden's wanted his coin to look, with the medallic strike and mile high devices. Great color, strike and luster throughout. With a shadow bit of toning near the eagle's head in the field.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

Lot 2226
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-62. Ever popular for the regal design which is closest to the original St. Gaudens concept (aside from the prohibitively rare and expensive ultra high reliefs). Each coin was struck seven to nine times in order to bring up the design elements, and relatively few were struck before the high relief design was drastically reduced. A few signs of contact, but quite nice for the moderate grade. Still in an old green insert PCGS holder.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 2227
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. MS-60+. This one has been cleaned in the past as we note traces of residue in the drapery folds on Liberty. Along the upper reverse rim, many letters show doubling from the multiple strikes required to bring up the high relief of the design. A few minor marks are noted along the rims, possibly where the delicate wire edge was removed. These coins were struck, and handled by countless collectors over the years, and despite all precautions, few are found in near perfect condition. This one is perfect for the collector who wants to be able to handle such a coin, and show it off on a velvet tray.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1915-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. One of the best available of this date. Mintages came in at a healthy 567,500 but most were later melted. Luckily for collectors, a bag of 1,000 of this date turned up in Central America some years ago, and that is the likely source of most mint state coins known. This gorgeous gem has a great strike and glowing luster. PCGS in their Population Report has graded 192 as such, with just 15 graded higher (all MS-66). One for the date collector who is assembling a gem set.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,500.

Lot 2271
1920-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. We are proud to present this extremely rare coin for auction. Throw away the mintage figures, of the 528,500 struck, perhaps 100 survive today in all grades. The rest were melted or otherwise lost. This date is so rare that Breen estimated the number to survive at 8-12 when he wrote his Encyclopedia. Today, with the advantage of the PCGS and NGC Population Reports we see that around 100 have been graded by both services, which no doubt include some duplication between them. Of those graded, this is one of the best, as PCGS reports only 7 this high, with a single coin graded higher! We note that this one is housed in the old style green insert holder. Well struck for the date, with full details on the devices, and just a minor scattering of ticks keeping this just out of the full gem class. Identifiable by a small mark near the ray left and below from the eagle's beak. Good luster and a wonderful example for the specialist to purchase for a date set.
Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000.
