Lot 1593
1936 Albany Half Dollar. Each of these grades MS-66 or better. We are proud to offer a small hoard of superbly toned original commemorative half dollars. Coins from this group include the original cardboard holder which was used to ship the coins safely through the mail, and if the coins were left in these holders, as seen here, magnificent toning slowly appeared on the surfaces. The cardboard holder grades Very Fine or better, and shows few signs of wear or handling. Remarkably, these commemorative half dollars were put away since their time of issue, kept in the cardboard holders and allowed to tone without interruption for decades. Today we have stunning deep gold and flecks of darker hues on one side of each coin in this lot, the other side is toned with the familiar "tab" toning from the cardboard tab that held the coin in place. A small amount of sulfur in the cardboard holder (probably part of the paper making process) causes silver coins to tone, as well as exposure to the air (just look at any silver pieces around the house, and try keeping them bright). Over many years, magnificent colors can appear, as seen on the Benson coins or on these commemorative half dollars, and these "toned" coins can bring significant premiums depending on the organization and vibrancy of the toning hues.
Estimated Value $1,800-UP.

1939-S Arkansas Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Brilliant gold toning at the periphery with areas of darker gold elsewhere, the centers brighter silver color. Lot 1603
1936 Bay Bridge Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. One of the finest graded of this popular issue. The coin is lightly toned with hazy white over the surfaces, at the extreme edge through the date there is a brilliant red splash with similar tones at the top of the reverse too, probably caused by long storage in the original paper holder. Curiously, the large grizzly bear is often peppered in tick marks from handling, not so here, as close examination will locate precious few signs of contact. PCGS agrees, and they have graded 59 this high with just 7 graded higher (all MS-68). Bear that in mind when bidding.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

1936 Bridgeport Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Totally original and perfectly matched with most of the others from the Benson Commemorative half dollar set, the surfaces show hazy gray toning with darker gold at the rims. Well struck and very clean for the grade. We note a single small reeding mark on Barnum's jaw and a few very light surface ticks on the high points elsewhere. PCGS notes 387 graded this high, with 27 graded higher (all MS-67), to give the bidders a picture of how difficult this grade is to obtain.
Estimated Value $300 - 350.

Lot 1614
1936 Bridgeport Half Dollar. Each of the two coins grades MS-65 or better. Here is something we rarely see, each coin is still housed in the original blue box of issue with the Bridgeport gold seal on the cover, and two gold bands at the top and around the edges. The boxes grade Good or so. Both coins show delightful toning over blazing luster, and are simply stunning to behold in their original box of issue. These two are part of an old hoard which recently turned up, and somehow missed the crazy games of dipping and cleaning that have diminished so many others over the decades. Lot of 2 coins.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

1925 California Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-68. One of the most perfect California Commemoratives in existence, with frosty white centers and delightfully toned edges. As to the grade, MS-68, the surfaces are nudging perfection back another notch. NGC has only graded 8 this high, PCGS just 2, and neither service has graded any higher. Sharply struck at the centers, and this is one of the nicest commemoratives to survive of any issue.
Estimated Value $3,500-UP.

1936-S Cincinnati Music Center Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. The PCGS Population Report notes that of the three mints used to coin these in 1936, San Francisco produced the fewest gems. We note 126 graded as MS-65 of this date and mint, with just 12 graded higher, all MS-66. Hence, this one should sell for a healthy premium over the P or D Mint coins. Delicate gold around the edge, and very clean on Foster's face.
