Farschian, Mahmoud. "O Wine-Bearer Brighten My Cup". Mahmoud Farshchian (1930, 92 years old) is the most celebrated and revered painter of Iranian art of the 20th Century. "The Museum of Master Mahmoud Farshchian", is a museum devoted to the works of Farshchian, which has been set up by the Cultural Heritage Foundation in the Sa'dabad Cultural Complex in Tehran, inaugurated in 2001 and holds a great percentage of his works.

True to Farshchian's lyrical works which have a tradition of poetry running through Modern Middle-Eastern culture, this work is a narration of a poem by Hafez (1320-1390). Hafez's works are considered the pinnacle of Persian literature. This masterpiece portrays Ghazal 11 from the book "Divan" a collection of his surviving poems probably compiled after his death. Farschian has cleanly lettered in the lower right corner two lines from the poem which translate "O wine-bearer brighten my cup with the wine / O minstrel say good fortune is now mine." Painting was completed in 1961 and comes with exceptional provenance. Art measures 28 x 21 and is framed and matted to 31 x 25 in a cherry wood frame. As examined, the work is in pristine condition. Estimated Value $45,000 - 65,000

Käthy Kollwitz. "Death & Woman". (1867-1945) Early 20th Century German artist of considerable acclaim and by the beginning of WWI, she was one of the most prominent graphic artists in the country and known for her various social, political associations. When her son was killed in battle in WWI, it only fueled Kollwitz's anti-war sentiment already visible in her early works of war and poverty with unflinching images of tragedy, of women grieving lost children and other galvanizing subjects all important and recurring themes.

Etching, drypoint, printed in black on heavy off-white laid paper. Etching has in very small block letters (one needs a loop to read) on lower left corner Orig Rao Von Kate Kollwitz and on lower far right corner "Druck V O Felsing, Berlin Chittog" and what appears a blind embossed stamp (possibly paper brand)

Etching is in excellent condition as examined in frame. It has been matted to 18 x 18" square. The frame itself is of poor quality. We will ship in frame on request but the glass will be removed. Estimated Value $4,000 - 700

Renate Druks. "Cat". (1921-2007) Viennese born, Los Angeles based painter, director and actress, whose upbringing there is little known. Sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s she lived in the Mexico art colony San Miguel de Allende. She bonded with other female artists living there painting women and their animal familiars, mostly cats.
Anais Nin was a longtime friend, and Druks was a muse for two peculiar little books written by Nin later in her career, Portrait in Three Dimensions, and Collages.
But she became a bit of a sensation, famous for being famous surrounding herself with talented eccentrics such as Kenneth Anger whose friendship with Druks inspired some of his films.

Offered is a lovely cat painting gifted to actress Doris Dowling who was married to Artie Shaw from 1952-56. This painting is from their son, Jonathan Shaw, renowned counter-culture opinion maker, author and artist who has created a most unique Letter of Authenticity incorporating his signature and very colorful logo stating the painting is from his personal collection.

Painting was in an ill fitting frame causing just some slight chipping to very edges of panel otherwise fine. 10 x 8" with Druks signing in lower left border. Estimated Value $500 - 1,000

Roualt, Georges. Juge (Chapon e Rouault 289). (1871-1958) Important and significant French artist of the first half of the 20th Century. Georges Roualt captured faces of his fellow citizens on the fringes of French Society particularly those of dance hall women, prostitutes, and circus performers, specifially clowns. He also made several important paintings of judges which expressed his skepticism and criticism of the systems in place for justice. "If I have made judges such lamentable figures, it is doubtless because I betrayed the anguish which I feel at the sight of a human being who has to pass judgment on other men. The judges themselves I could not condemn."

Goldberg Auctions is pleased to offer this important work entitled "Juge" (The Judge). Ink and colors on paper. Art was originally over ten years ago but has been removed from aging frame and glass with artwork still professionally affixed at outermost edges to mat for protection with a more recent addition of clean acid free panel to protect the back. 13 x 10" is in excellent condition with no issues. Signed in lower left corner "G Roualt 1939". Estimated Value $2,500 - 6,000
