  American Revolutionary War Era, a 12 Pounder, Solid Shot Cannon Ball ca. 1770. Fine, highly prized artifact from The Revolutionary War in beautiful condition with minor casting imperfections and a deeply toned age patina. 4.75 inches in diameter and weight 11.25 pounds. No information where this particular ball was discovered but owner has consigned cannonballs in the past from the Hudson Highlands area.   John Ericsson: Oil on Canvas Portrait, Possibly the Only Known to Exist (1803-1889) Swedish-born American naval engineer and inventor who developed the first screw propeller but more famously the Union's Monitor during the Civil War, the first armoured revolving turret warship. While the turret was designed Theodore Timby, it was Ericsson that designed and supervised its construction in 101 Days. Offered is a portrait of the storied inventor, artist unknown. Appears to have been painted some years after the Civil War. This striking and handsome portrait was professionally re-lined, cleaned and conditioned by Century Fine Art Restoration to ready for auction. 20 x 16 framed to 25 x 21" possibly in its original frame.   34 Star American Flag ca. 1861, Civil War Era. Excellent Display Piece. Outstanding, vintage/antique, original, 34 star American flag dates to the opening of the Civil War. Kansas was admitted to the Union as the 34th state on January 29, 1861, about 2½ months prior to the start of the war at Fort Sumter. The 34th star representing Kansas was officially added on July 4th later that year and remained official until 1863. Flag clearly sewn to accommodate a guidon due to the fabric wrapped/folded over and sewn on left side. Cotton flag measures 18 x 24", the star configuration is 7-7-6-7-7 and having quite fine colors in spite of the natural overall toning of the fabric given the years. Displays beautifully and with frame measures 22 x 28". Fantastic relic from The Civil War, the scars apparent. Estimated Value $2,750 - 5,000

  Ericsson, John: ALS by the American Design Engineer of the USS Monitor in the Civil War and Other Innovations in Ship Building. Fine Content (1803-1899) Swedish-born American engineer, John Ericsson is famously known for his improvements in the design of the steam engine for varied uses in the industrial age, the screw propeller and later working on war ships when in 1862 he designed and supervised the building in a mere 101 days of the USS Monitor that introduced a new era in warfare. Rotating turrets and capable of firing torpedos which played a central role in the Battle of Hampton Roads.
Fine letter addressing technical issues and demand for information regarding engines being built and references Otis (Elisha) and his engines used in elevators and elevating platforms, and insinuates as competition. He continues that "with our great demonstration close at hand, we have nothing to fear". 2pp March5,1949 fine condition, very small fold split held in check with archival tape.   Rare Original Publications: The Barbarities of the Rebels (Atrocities by Confederate Soldiers) and Reminiscences of General Braxton Bragg. "The Barbarities of the Rebels" by John Russell Bartlett Printed in 1863 which was a highly sensational and unfounded propaganda alleging atrocities by the Confederate soldiers including cruelty towards Union prisoners, the murder of slaves and cowardly conduct. Both the North and South had such propaganda pieces published, but this 40 page pamphlet proved a thunderclap to rally the Union. Light dampstaining at top of all the pages otherwise the condition is remarkable for this paper booklet.

  Civil War: 9 Cartes de Visite by Brady, Pittock or Anthony: Generals Winfield Scott, George Meade, Joseph Hooker, Henry Hallec + More. During the Civil War. cartes de visite proved immensely popular as soldiers and the general population would have a means of inexpensively obtaining photographs and sending them to loved ones in small envelopes. Further, politicians and military leaders of the Civil War proved popular by collectors as well as myriad of celebrities.

Here are nine (9) cartes de visite, six identified in borders: A fantastic General Winfield Scott by Mathew Brady, General George Meade, General Henry Halleck, General Joseph Hooker, General Franz Sigel, and Brigadier General Alex Hayes. Also included are three other CdV that are not identified, but certainly men in Civil War uniforms. Clearly these cards were collected by a pro-Union American who identified their names within the card stock borders without encroaching on the actual images. Overall these are in excellent condition with adhesive remnants on verso from once being mounted in a folio or display. 4 x 2½". Estimated Value $600 - 1,000

  Confederate Sponge Bucket, Richmond Virginia in Very Fine Found Condition. Civil War, Confederate sponge bucket found in Richmond, VA. Sponge buckets were made of sheet iron and held water dipping a sponge to clean out the bore when washing out the cannon. The bottoms were turned over the sides and were riveted together as in this piece. The swivel eye on the handle used to attach to the axle strap on the gun carriage. The information on this piece was carefully lettered in white on one side of the bucket. A great find. Condition: appears bucket may have been relined/riveted but certainly during the period due to damage to the original bottom which adds considerable interest. Estimated Value $500 - 900

  Trove of Civil War Ephemera: Three (3) Cannonballs, Antique G.A.R. Metal Pin on Slouch Hat, and Over 75 Fired Bullets Most Identified Where Found. Fine collection of Civil War ephemera.
1.) Three cannonballs: Best is a 2.15 pounder 2.5" in Diameter that sits on a stand with plaque found near Vicksburg Battlefield in excellent condition. The other two are 1.15 pounders with heavy oxidation and pitting 2.25" in diameter.
2.) Felt "Slouch Hat" of considerable age and wear with a metal cast GAR. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866
3.) 75 Fired bullets obtained by respected collectors and dealers with most having the areas where found noted. Locations included are Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg, Kennesaw Mountain, Shiloh, Bull Run, Richmond, Spottsylvania, Appomattox, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and Cold Harbor. Many of the notation cards identify the weapons fired.

  State of Maine Civil War Certificate Printed Signature of Joshua Chamberlain and John Caldwell. Original Civil War Volunteer certificate issue to a Wilmot Blake. (No date) Certificate is illustrated with circular portraits of Chamberlain, Grant with five vignette war scenes, bold and clear inked signature of Chamberlain but is a facsimile as is General John Caldwell from a steel engraving. 13 x 16 certificate was framed, then mounted in a plexglass box. Overall toning an one chip to border. 13 x 16" framed to 19 x 21"
Also included is a selection of Civil War era newspapers in excellent condition. Papers from this time were made of rag paper and their surprising hardiness make them easy to read and handle. Full Section from Springfield Republican December 19, 1861 with the "Latest News of Mr. Sumner presenting a petition for the emancipation of slaves with compensation to loyal master and Mr. Wiley of Va. presenting a petition that the existing war forced upon the country by states in rebellion, without provocation, was intended to destroy the Union.   Two Civil War Era Documents: 1864 Secretary of Navy, Gideon Welles and In 1861, James M. Greene President of Naval Asylum. Two Civil War era documents: 1.) Document signed from the Naval Asylum, Philadelphia, dated April 30th, 1861 to a Charles H. Burbank confirming that his application to the office of Assistant Surgeon has been reviewed by the Secretary of the Navy and that he is sixth in line for a commission to be called into service. After five years, he will be entitled to the rank of Surgeon if he has proven himself successful. It ends with " (We) hope, that by the cheerful and conscientious discharge of your professional duties, and by your correct, gentlemanly and moral deportment, you will reflect an honor on your country and on the department of its Naval Service…" 10 x 8½" and in excellent condition. 2.) On August 28th, 1864, Mr. Burbank was promoted to Surgeon, two years early with this document by direction of the President of the United States and signed by Secretary of the Navy. Gideon Welles. Welles was a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln in his campaign for President and was chosen by him as Secretary of the Navy. In short order he pulled together a mess of a Naval fleet and expanded it ten fold. His Naval portion of the Anaconda Plan strongly weakened the Confederacy's ability to finance the war by limiting the cotton trade, and proved a major contribution towards Northern victory. 18 x 9½, overall excellent clean condition with a small edge tear at fold.   Rare 19th Century Deluxe Boxed Set of Three French Puzzles (1875-1880) of Military Campaigns. A Beautiful Set With Their Original Box. Rare, near impossibly to find, 19th Century deluxe box set of three puzzles made in France having excellent lithography and gold gilt accents. The scenes are military campaigns, and exercises appear to be illustrated by Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier or in the manner of. The condition of the three different puzzles are outstanding, the outer box certainly protected them well keeping the condition high. To that end, the outer box does show evidence of handling and wear comensurate with age. The puzzle pieces are quite thick, nothing like puzzles of today and likely why they have remained in such excellent condition. These are not challenging puzzles, but for any manuscript, book, or game collector, this is a great, great find. Estimated Value $300 - 500

  Collection of Signed Photos by Paul Tibbets, Charles W. Sweeny and Signed Covers by Fellow Bombadiers. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. (1915-2007) is best known as the aircraft captain who flew the B-29 Superfortress known as the Enola Gay when it dropped a Little Boy, the first of two atomic bombs used in warfare, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) flew Bockscar carrying the Fat Man atomic bomb to the Japanese city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
Offered are four (4) inscribed and signed B&W 8 x 10 photos of the B-29 by Tibbets. There are 6 photos B & W signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photos of his airplane or in the cockpit and 4 covers signed by Charles Sweeney

  Two Vintage Original Soviet, Anti-Germany Propaganda Flyers In Excellent Condition. Propaganda flyers during WWII whether dropped on troops and citizens by airplane or by missiles, were a frequent tool in attempting to sway sentiment, enrage or terrify by opposing forces. Here are two Soviet printed flyers in German in nearly mint condition.
1.) The largest flyer is dated January, 1942 listing all the nations that are allied against Germany and proclaiming defeat is inevitable. The illustration of dead Germans with the pleas to surrender both in Russian and German. 8 x 10¾"
2.) Smaller flyer has no date but as the Italian horse is seen running off, likely post Sept. 1943. Spoof of Hitler by Soviets with the remaining horses weakened labeled Finland, Romania and Hungary. This flyer is very rare and in two colors, black and light yellow. 4½ x 6". Estimated Value $150 - 300

  Three Iconic Photos and a Film of the Japanese Surrender. Four Items: (1) 8 x 10" color photo of the Marine Corps War Memorial, signed "Herschel W. Williams /Medal of Honor / Iwo Jima / Feb. 23, 1945." Williams won his medal for actions "above and beyond the call of duty" on the same day Joe Rosenthal took the iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi. The memorial, sculpted by Felix de Weldon and dedicated to all U.S. Marine Corps personnel who died in the defense of the United States since 1775, was inspired by Rosenthal's photo. With PSA/DNA COA. (2) Two copies of Alfred Eisenstaedt's Times Square V-J Day photo of American sailor George Mendonsa (who passed away on Feb. 18, 2019) grabbing nurse Greta Zimmer, a stranger, and laying a big smooch on her. One photo, with an 11/05/12 date-stamp on the back, is signed "Times Square / George Mendonsa" in black marker; with a COA from the UK. The other photo is simply signed "George Mendonsa" in red marker; with JSA cert sticker. (3) Original 16mm Castle Films movie of "Japan's Surrender!" In the original red, white, and blue box.
