  35 Documents from the Mid-1600s to Mid 1800s: Land Grants, Deeds, Indentures, Wills and Sales: A Beautifully Kept Collection. An impressive collection of legal documents, from Colonial America, through the Civil War and into the Industrial Revolution. A great many worthy of professional presentation and display. Several retain their wax seals, almost all in crisp condition and make for fascinating reading. Almost all are on vellum boasting exquisite calligraphy. Obviously most are from the Northeast, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Pennsylvania etc. with the few abroad from England. The earliest documents are from 1656, a marriage document in fine condition in exceptionally legible and a beautiful illuminated English document from 1727 having to do with "Recovery Suffered by Mr. Woodward & Wife". One of the more recent documents is from 1850 and is an exquisitely handwritten and easy to read, last will and testament.

  Finletter, Thomas Knight: 5th Ambassador to NATO, Archive Including Letters, Scheduling Guests for John Kennedy's 1961 Trip To France. Twenty page archive of autographed notes signed, "unclassified" schedules for President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy's 1961 trip to Paris all quite interesting. There are at least eight autographed notes signed by Finletter addressing a variety of issues. Also included is an inscribed and signed photo to Finletter by Stephen Early, only the third White House Press Secretary, to Truman. Excellent condition. Estimated Value $200 - 500

  Cromwell, Oliver: Signed Partial Manuscript as 'Oliver P' Dated August 12, 1657, Rare. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. Partial document signed by Cromwell as Oliver P, Whitehall, August 12, 1657. Other notations include "For General Montague on board the Nafsby." Cromwell's signature displays obvious unsteadiness due to his malarial fevers that would be triggered frequently from terrible stress which ultimately led to severe ill health from a chest infection and pneumonia. Cromwell died only a year after signing this document. 10½ x 8½" partial document that remains is in fine condition with archival tape holding a minor split, minor chipping along one side. Saudi Arabia
King Faisal bin Abdulaziz (1906-1975) Former Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, a significant and important career as a statesman early in his career while his father Ibn Saud, was Kind of Saudi Arabia. Both brought modernization and stabilization to the region. Faisal successfully stabilized the kingdom's bureaucracy, and his reign had significant popularity among Saudi Arabians despite his reforms facing some controversy. In 1975, he was assassinated by his nephew Faisal bin Musaid. Faisal became quite familiar in the West with the publication of T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the David Lean epic, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Ahmed Zaki Yamani (1930-2021) Influential Saudi statesman especially as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources whose power plays and manipulation of prices played an outsized role for the 1973 Oil Embargo. 2½ x 1¾"
Abolhassan Banisadr (1933-2021) First President of Iran after 1979 Iranian Revolution abolished the monarchy, serving from February 1980 until his impeachment by parliament in June 1981. Charles Dickens, likely the greatest novelist of the Victorian Era a collection of his handwriting and other pieces: A holograph sentence, two addressed covers, one with his wax seal on verso and one note to Mrs. Bryan W. Procter all clearly in his hand but none with his signature. Holograph sentence reads "and all not be forgotten in their practices". Also included is an ALS by Dickens' son Henry Fielding Dickens on letterhead imprinted 8 Mulberry Walk, S.W. dated 1927 who authored "Memories of my Father" writes to a gentleman declining to write an intro for a book. Also included a four page letter written by George Dunlop Leslie who recalls his father and Dickens engaged in an art deal. Leslie sent these recollections to British wood-engraver, author, and illustrator, Frederick George Kitton, best known for illustrating and editing the works of Charles Dickens. Civil War Content in Lowell Letter (1794-1878) William Cullen Bryant was an acclaimed romantic but was also a journalist and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post. Autograph letter signed and dated to Elliott C. Cowden on New York Evening Post note card dated May 25, 1874 having to turn down an offer to attend and event in Boston due to great pain in his right shoulder and his family advising not to make the trip. 7 x 4¼" framed and matted beautifully with engraving to 16½ x 19½" All in excellent condition.

  Hellman, Lillian; Autographed Letter Signed with a Very Pithy, Amusing Close to the Letter. Addressee Indecipherable But Someone Close (1905-1984) American author, playwright and screenwriter whose works proved extremely popular. Later she did find herself in controversy regarding some of her claims in life as well as blacklisted during the HUAC hearings but her dramatic works are still highly regarded which include "The Little Foxes" which she received an Oscar for adapting her own novel, "Watch on the Rhine" "The Children's Hour" and more. Hellman was also of note having a 30+ year relationship with Dashiell Hammett likely one of the greatest detective novelists of the time ("The Thin Man" and "The Maltese Falcon") who likewise was blacklisted by HUAC.
Letter is to someone indecipherable (male) thanking him for a recording of the "Goldberg Variations" by Bach and closes with the following. "You are the only loving man who ever thought there was anything admirable about me when I was angry. Therefore, it seems mandatory now that you get a divorce and marry me. Please attend to it quickly…" If the addressee is a nickname for Hammett we cannot be sure. But certainly a great letter of her wit. 8 x 6" beautifully framed with photo 13 x 17".   Sandburg, Carl; Literary Giant of the 20th Century, ALS, Handsomely presented (1878-1967) Carl Sandburg enjoyed one of the most celebrated and lauded career of the the 20th Century. He was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes, two for poetry, one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln and whose impact on American literature and history is almost without peer. ALS executed in pencil on hotel stationery dated February 8th (no year) Northhampton, Mass. to a Mr. Peffer on arriving in NYC at Grand Central asking him to meet him there or if not, at his publishers, Harcourt Brace & Co. Signed "Faithfully Carl Sandburg". Examined in frame, note was folded three times, with a slip of tape at fold line under Peffer. Otherwise very clean and exceptionally legible with a bold signature. Note is 8 x 5½" very nicely framed in gilt wood 14.25 x 18" which includes a fine portrait of the author. Estimated Value $500 - 900

Signatures all Three Beautifully Presented.
Collection of three authors/poets signatures.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (his son, Jr. was the celebrated Supreme Court Justice) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. Beautiful signature on a calling card dated Boston, Feb. 1st, 1881 1½ x 4½" and framed to with photo 15 x 10½".
Archibald Joseph Cronin, also a physician author best known for his books about miners, his greatest triumph, "The Citadel". Extremely bold signature in red wax pencil on woven paper 9 x 6" framed to 12½ x 9½" in gilt wood frame.
Edwin Markham Popular poet of the early 20th Century, his best known work, "The Man with the Hoe" was also the author of the poem "Lincoln, the Man of the People" that was selected to be read (by Markham) at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial with 100,000 present at the event and over two million on the radio.   Browning, Robert; Salutation and Signature + Algernon C. Swinburn ALS. Both in Deluxe Presentations (1812-1889) Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright known for his long poems "Pauline" (1833) and "Paracelsus" (1835), later his epic poem "The Ring and the Book" (1868–1869) and his spellbinding monologues. Offered is a cut signature, the conclusion of a larger letter, "Yours affectionately ever Robert Browning" 1½ x 3½" and very nicely framed to 14½ x 10½".

(1837-1909) Algernon C. Swinburg was, at times, quite the controversial poet and author addressing themes considered taboo at the time. But overall his works were held in such esteem, and cemented his reputation as one of the great lyrical poets of his time. ALS (signed A.C. Swinburne) acknowledging receipt to an unknown person of a check and is dated February 14, 1877. ALS is 7 x 5" framed to an overall presentation 20 x 20 which includes a superb, 1874 litho of him that ran in Vanity Fair entitled "Before Sunrise" by Carlo Pelligrini who illustrated under the pseudonym Ape. It is estimated that just over 200 films have been based on his works both in silent and sound films and his works are still read with great enthusiasm today. The man behind LET'S MAKE A DEAL and his wife, Marilyn were clearly admired by politicians, business leaders and highly regarded by his fellow entertainers as evident in a collection of wonderful letters in this auction.   Astor, John Jacob III ALS Dated 1877 on his 338 Fifth Avenue Stationery and Charles C. Tiffany (1822-1890) Legendary American financier, philanthropist and a soldier during the American Civil War, John Jacob Astor III was a prominent member of the Astor family, becoming the wealthiest family member in his generation. Here, Astor is writing to clearly a close friend, disappointed they were both in Venice but him not receiving a letter saying so. He then catches her up with family and reveals he will be sailing back to America out of Liverpool and signing J.J. Astor. As letter was sent from Geneva, Astor crosses through the NY mansion address and writes Geneva, August 29, 1877. 8 x 10" folded with only very light staining and minor splits in some fold lines.   Collection of Letters to a French Composer: Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, 6 French Politicians and Mgr Pedro López Quintana, Papal Diplomat. Jean FONTANILLE is a French guitar player and composer from Bordeaux. Charismatic, talented and savvy, he was the co-founder of the French online Music School BandNote and continues to play with a great number of pop singers. He has released three albums. He created compositions in honor of several men of note: 1.) 1986 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel writing in French and signing on Boston University letterhead, dated Oct. 30, 1991. 2.) 1.) George William Frederick III clipped signature off vellum manuscript 2 x 3". Toned but signature very legible. Vintage portrait engraving with printed signature is included.
2.) William IV: Large clipped signature signed William R, extremely bold executed on laid paper. 1½ x 6", quite clean with just minor toning. Vintage portrait engraving with printed signature is included.
3.) Queen Victoria: Large, beautifully executed signature from a document 2 x 6" with the date of the original document on verso "The fourth day of July, 1839" only year two of her reign. British Museum post card of photo of a medallion created in her honor with a printed signature below.

1.) George III: Vellum document signed, folio, St. James, October 1806 commissioning a James Gent as Adjutant in the 25th Regiment of Light Dragoons. Subsequently commission was crossed through. Countersigned by Castlereagh. Signed "George R", one immediately notes the blotting and shaky penmanship no doubt due to his lengthy mental and physical deterioration. 9½ x 13½" Very fine.
2.) William IV: Vellum document signed, folio, St. James, August 1833, commissioning a Donald McDonald as Captain of the 27th Regiment. Excellent condition with an exceptionally large, bold signature by "William R".

  Revolutionary War Era 4 Manuscripts/Documents Including an ALS by Gouverneur Morris, Zebulon Butler, Richard Varick and a Robert Morris Note. Collection of four Revolutionary War era notables.
1.) ALS by Gouverneur Morris, Signer of the Constitution and author of its preamble, 1p quatro, New York, June 26, 1774, probably to his solicitor regarding that "Mrs. Morris is of the same opinion regarding monies in Bauhers's Hand and will such time he can raise funds rather than distress him with the sale of his land. Clipped close to sides with no loss of text. Neatly penned and in very fine condition. 8 x 7½".
2.) Zebulon Butler, soldier and politician from Connecticut who served with the Continental Army as Lt. Colonel of the 3rd Regiment and commanded teh garrison of Forty Fort. A debenture for salaries due members of the Connecticut legislature. Dated 1760, double sided 9 ½ x 8".
3.) Richard Varick, One of George Washington's trusted military confidents, recording secretary of his staff and close friend and admirer of Benedict Arnold until exposed which caused him great mental distress. Varrick went on to even greater success in New York as attorney-general and ultimately the Mayor of New York. Here he has signed a permit to an individual to own a tavern with a huge list of restrictions.
4.) Robert Morris Promissary Note Signed in Philadelphia on April 8 1795 boldly causing ink burn through the 'r' and 's'. Morris was one of only two men to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. But shady land deals spiraled him into debt and in fact he was arrested and put into a Philly prison three years after signing this note. Estimated Value $300 - 500

  18 Revolutionary War Era Documents, Grants, Promissory Notes, Paymaster Lists Many Signed by Individuals of Note. Large, very interesting collection of 18th Century instruments and manuscripts during the Revolutionary War. Signatures include members of the Continental Congress, selectmen, statesmen including Richard Ridgely, an ALS (actually a promissory note) by Edmund Randolph the 1st Attorney General of the US (1789-1794) Captain George Lewis (nephew of George and Martha Washington) bill for goods in support of his volunteer cavalry corp to diffuse resistance in Pittsburgh over excise taxes on liquor. Other items include signatures by mayor of New York, and a letter of recommendation to city of Newport by John Collins, Land tax receipt signed by register of Lancaster Country. There is one document signed twice by Isaac De Remier dated June 7, 1718 who was Mayor of New York from 1700-1702. Overall the condition of these pieces in good to fine condition.
