Outstanding, Highly Prized Pair of Koshare or Hano Clown Kachinas one by Clarence Cleveland, the other Artist J.Y. Koshare or Hano Clown depict the spirit of mischievous and gluttonous behavior. The interpretations by Hopi artists are frequently amusing and imaginative creating jesters with drums, watermelons, striped paint, a funny headdress and other elements to convey boisterous behavior, gluttony, acting out or displaying ribald behavior.
1.) The Koshare by Clarence Cleveland is the standout here. Sitting on a tree stump with slices of watermelon in both hands plus one at the ready is absolutely fantastic. Watermelon juice can be seen staining his breeches, his hands and mouth. He is wearing a fantastic and silly hat and squatting on the stump as if in defiance. Cleveland's Koshare carvings are very in demand. 10" tall and again, a very fine piece.
2.) The taller is of Hano Clown, again traditionally painted in black and white stripes, holding a watermelon, the requisite clown hat and a very funny frown of a face. What is of particular note is the quality of the carving, so much motion captured in his stance. We note a well done repair to one of the spikes, noticeable only at very close inspection. 12" tall. Estimated Value $400 - 600
From the Collection of Sally Ann Skeoch.
