Judaea, Bar Kokhba Revolt. Silver Zuz (3.00 g), 132-135 CE. Year 1 (132/3 CE). 'Eleazar the priest', jug with handle; willow branch at right. Reverse: 'Year one of the redemption of Israel', grape bunch on vine with small leaf. Mildeberg 2 (O2/R1; this coin); TJC 219; Hendin 6403. Extremely Rare. Struck on a nice broad flan. Toned. Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP The branch to the right of the jug has traditionally been identified as a palm branch. In "The Temple Willow-Branch Ritual Depicted on Bar Kokhba Denarii," INJ 16 (2007-2008), pp. 131-5, Y. Adler argues that it is in fact a willow branch, and represents the willow branch ceremony that took place along with the water ceremony (represented by the jug) at the Temple altar during the Feast of Tabernacles. Antoninus Pius. Æ Medallion 29 mm (23.12 g), AD 138-161. Gaza in Judaea, RY 205 (AD 144/5). AVT KAI AΔPI ANTωNINO, laureate and draped bust of Antoninus Pius right. Reverse: ΓAZA, veiled and draped bust of Tyche right; behind, dae (EC); before, Marnas symbol (mem). Yashin -; Rosenberger -; Sofaer 85; RPC IV.3 -. Very rare date for the series. Very Fine. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP This coin carries a very rare date in the voluminous dated coinage struck at Gaza under Antoninus Pius. Whereas Gaza’s coinage was somewhat sporadic under previous emperors and often connected to military movements or imperial visits, it was struck in every year of Antoninus Pius except for 206 (AD 145/6), the year immediately following the emission of the present rare issue. It has been suggested that the apparent need for bronze coinage in this period might be connected to the cost of reorganizing of the old province of Judaea as Syria Palaestina. This view seems to be supported by a similar uptick in production at Ascalon and Aelia Capitolina at the same time. The reverse type is rather enigmatic, but traditional at Gaza. It features a large Phoenician letter mem (M) which is generally believed to represent Marnas, the chief deity of the city. It been argued that the name of Marnas is actually an Aramaic term meaning "Our Lord" and is essentially equivalent to the use of Ba’al ("Lord") as the title of other Semitic gods. Marnas may be a survival of the old Philistine fertility deity Dagon. In the Roman period his temple was located in the very heart of the city of Gaza. Marcus Aurelius. Æ 28 mm (19.91 g), AD 161-180. Ake-Ptolemaïs in Phoenicia. IMP CAES M AVR AN AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius right. Reverse: COL PTOL, Radiate and draped bust of male deity (Ba'al of Carmel?) right; before, torch. Kadman 111; Sofaer 145; Mabbott 2702; RPC IV.3 6877. A fantastic coin, perfectly centered with a marvelous reverse. Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP The uncertain deity on the reverse of this coin is sometimes identified with the local Ba’al ("Lord") of Mount Carmel. This Ba’al was an old Semitic storm god who was regularly treated as a form of Zeus or Jupiter Heliopolitanus by the Greeks and Romans. According to the Biblical book of 1 Kings (18:20–39) Mount Carmel was the scene of a famous duel between the priests of Ba’al and the Israelite Prophet Elijah in the ninth century BC. Elijah, seeking to end the worship of Ba’al in the Kingdom of Israel offered a challenge to the priests of the god: Both he and they would choose a sacrificial bull and prepare an altar on the top of Mount Carmel, but neither would light their respective altars. Instead, they would pray for them to be lit through divine intervention. While the priests of Ba’al spent all day praying and crying out to their god, Elijah built an altar from twelve stones, dug a trench around it and doused it and the sacrificial victim with three jars of water. There was no response from Ba’al to the prayers of his worshippers, but when Elijah asked Yahweh to accept his sacrifice, fire was said to have poured down from heaven to consume the victim, the altar, and the water in the trench. In the aftermath, all 450 of the priests of Ba’al were killed. Nevertheless, despite this incredible setback to the worship of Ba’al on Mount Carmel, his cult survived well into the Roman imperial period. The possible representation of the Ba’al of Mount Carmel on this coin may have had a dual function—to advertise a prominent cult center near Akko-Ptolemais and to associate the city with a local deity of great age. Under the Antonine emperors it was popular for many cities of the Near East to use their coinage to emphasize their antiquity and trace their origins to famous founders. Lucius Verus. Æ Medallion 32 mm (34.01 g), AD 161-169. Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem) in Judaea. IMP CAES L AVREL VERVS AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust of Lucius Verus right. Reverse: COL AELI CAPE (sic), she-wolf standing right on low base, head left, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus. Cf. Kadman 72 (obv. legend and bust); Meshorer 61 corr. (bust); cf. Rosenberger 40 (obv. legend and bust); Sofaer -; RPC IV.3 3611 (temporary). Very rare - RPC documents just three specimens although there are undoubtedly a few more. Excellent hard olive-green patina. The most impressive coin we have handled from Aelia Capitolina! Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP Aelia Capitolina was the Latin name given to the Roman colony that Hadrian maliciously decided to found on the ruins of Jerusalem during his tour of the Roman Near East in AD 129/30. The erection of a colony with a temple dedicated to Jupiter Capitolinus on the very site of the Temple destroyed by Titus in AD 70 was an unbearable affront to the local Jewish population and resulted in the outbreak of the bloody Bar-Kokhba War (AD 132-135). Nevertheless, following the repression of this rebellion, Aelia Capitolina became the administrative capital of the new province of Syria Palaestina that was created to replace the former province of Judaea. It also served as the primary base for soldiers of Legio X Fretensis—the same legion that had been involved in the conquest of Jerusalem under Titus. The total-Roman makeover of Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina is made explicit in the reverse type of this impressive coin, which features the infant Romulus and Remus suckled by the she-wolf. It celebrates the mythological founders of the city on the Tiber that would one day destroy the city of David.
This coin may have been struck in the context of Lucius Verus’ war against the Parthian Empire in AD 161-166. During much of the conflict, Verus was physically present in the Roman Near East, but primarily in the environs of Antioch in Syria. Nevertheless, the war, which was fought by the generals rather than the luxury-loving Verus, involved the movement of troops from various regions and the production of civic bronze coinages to keep them supplied. Elagabalus. Æ 26 mm (9.05 g), AD 218-222. Ake-Ptolemaïs in Phoenicia. IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus right. Reverse: COL PTO, male diety standing within portable shrine, all within a dotted circle with rays dividing the twelve signs of the zodiac. Kadman 165; Rosenberger 70; Meshorer, City Coins 17; Sofaer -. Rouvier 1035. Possibly the finest known example of this extremely rare type. Very Fine. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP Despite the fact that Tyre is much nearer to Akko-Ptolemais than Sidon on the Phoenician coast, the reverse type of this impressive coin clearly reflects the strong influence of the latter. Around the same time that this extremely rare zodiac issue was being struck at Akko-Ptolemais a much more common series featuring the baetyl of Astarte in a cart surrounded by the zodiac was produced at Sidon under Elagabalus (BMC 260). On the Akko-Ptolemais issue no baetyl appears, but instead an anthropomorphic male deity, possibly to be identified with the Ba’al of Mount Carmel. It should be noted that Astarte was the traditional consort of Ba’al in ancient Semitic religions and therefore some festival involving the deities of Akko-Ptolemais and Sidon may be deduced since they both share the same surrounding depiction of the zodiac. The prominence of the zodiac here may perhaps serve to signal the beginning of a sacred year or a new era, although it is difficult to be certain. A similar surrounding zodiac also occurs on rare coins struck at Amastris in Paphlagonia with the portrait of Julia Maesa, the grandmother of Elagabalus (BMC 34). It may be that the use of the zodiac on all of these coins is intended to advertise the beginning of a new Severan age headed by Elagabalus and his family following the murder of Caracalla and the usurpation of Macrinus and Diadumenian in AD 217.
