$20 National Bank Note. National Mount Wollaston Bank, Quincy, MA. Ch. 517. Fr. 494. PMG Very Fine 20. This bank operated as the Mount Wollaston Bank prior to the National Bank era, and issued what we today call Obsolete notes. Once this bank chartered in September 1864 it would almost last the entire aforementioed era before being liquidated on the last day of 1934. This is the only known $20 Brown Back on the bank and is problem-free. PMG graded Very Fine 20. Estimated Value $750 - UP

The Pequonnock NB was chartered in March 1865 and issued just over $1.8 Million in banknotes before being liquidated in December of 1913. There are currently 14 notes recorded in Track and Price, with this the only $20 Brownback known. $5 National Bank Note. First NB of Suffield, CT. Ch. 497. Fr. 587. PCGS-C Very Fine 20 Apparent. This was the only bank to charter in this Hartford county locale, having done so in Jun 1864. The bank would last throughout the entire National Banking era, issuing just under $3.5 Million in banknotes. Likely this is the only Red Seal known on the bank, and this is its first appearance since 2006 where it sold for $7,475. PCGS Currency mentions a restoration at right edge, which is noticed once the note is candled. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

Chartered in November of 1863, the First NB lasted throughout the entire National Banking era, issuing just over $17 million in notes during that time. This is by far the finest of the five known Red Seals on the bank as well as any large size notes currently known from this institution. A beautiful survivor that looks like it was just printed. There are only three Red Seals currently known on this institution, with the other two notes serial number one notes. Rust is noted at each end of the note from old paperclips. This is otherwise a lovely and pleasing example with great stamped signatures of W. M. Quested as Cashier and George Clark as President. These two served together from 1905 until 1914. This is a lovely Date Back Five with great embossing clearly evident. Some specks of rust at upper left and what is showing on census as an internal tear in the cashier's stamped signature are noted. The village of Turners Falls was founded in 1868 by Alvah Crocker, who envisioned using the Connecticut River to create hydropower in order to lure industry. He would also be the first President of this bank that was chartered in October 1872. This is one of only two 1902 Date Backs currently known, both Fives, and the finer of the two. While this is the fourth chartered bank in the entire country, it isn't the first in the state, as Charter 2 is in New Haven. This is the finest of four recorded Red Seals, and is actually from the very last sheet of Red Seals issued. This is also the first appearance of a Red Seal since 2006, as those two notes in the same sale haven't been seen since. The signatures are faded away, but when will another be available?
