Federal Reserve Notes - Small

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 74
Gem Solid Serial #888888 $1 FRBN. $1 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Notes with solid serial numbers are far rarer than one might assume. While solid serial numbered large size bank notes are well known on Silver Certificates and Legal Tenders, researcher Martin Gengerke found that there are NO KNOWN eight digit solid serial numbered 88888888s and NO KNOWN seven digit 8888888s in any denomination from the $1 to the $50 on any district for the entire Federal Reserve Bank Notes series. (The $100 denomination FRBN was never printed.) This Fr. 714 $1 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note serial #C888888A is unique in that you simply cannot buy another six digit "solid eights" in any denomination $1 - $50 for the entire FRBN design. Adding in it’s extra-ordinary condition, and you are looking at one spectacular rarity graded PMG 66EPQ Gem Uncirculated. Estimated Value $4,000 - 8,000
The Zeitmann Brothers snagged this note for a bargain price five years ago at a Lyn Knight auction, where other bidders had no idea just how rare this piece was. Doing one's research always pays off when it comes time to sell your collection and the Zeitmanns did just that.

Choice $100 small head #K77777777A. Looking at the known population of small size $100 FRNs, we find: 1934C G44444444A 55, 1950D G11111111 65, 1974 B11111111A 64, 1990 G11111111A 65, 1993 B77777777C 58 and this note Fr. 2173-K $50 1993 K77777777A PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated. Yes it is the only known small head $50 banknote with solid serial #77777777. The Zeitmann's snagged this beauty four years ago for $4700, which was in our opinion a real steal. Estimated Value $5,000 - 10,000
With the advent of the large size re-designed US $100 FRNs in 1996, the demand for that denomination overseas exploded. But from the 1920s to the 1990’s the BEP printed very few $100 denomination notes. This wonderful example is the only "solid sevens" printed on the Dallas district for the 1990 series. A total of only 14 solid serial numbers 11111111 – 88888888 were printed in the small head design from 1928 to 1993, with this being the only 77777777. Small size solid serial numbered notes don’t get much rarer than this one.

Very Choice early $5 #D88888888A. This note was contained inside the James W. "Billy" Key collection auctioned by Lyn Knight ten years ago. At the time little research had been done in determining how rare this note actually is. This is the very first solid serial #88888888 we can document being auctioned from all $5 FRN series going back to 1928 to 1950. This Fr. 1962-D $5 1950A FRN #D88888888A is graded PCGS 64PPQ Very Choice New. Estimated Value $4,000 - 7,000
Virtually no one collected fancy serial numbered Federal Reserve Notes back in the 1950s. The fact that this note escaped in pristine condition is a near miracle. Finding early rarities like this is an amazing accomplishment.
Ex. James W. "Billy" Key Collection sold in two auctions 3-2012 and 6-2012.
