Lot 144		Encased Postage. Take Ayer's Pills One Cent. EP-3, HB-17. The mica is completely intact with just typical scratches and the left flap has a slight bend, but otherwise Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $200 - UP At the beginning of the Civil War, coin change literally dried up and people resorted to using postage stamps for change and trade. Due to their small size these small squares of paper didn't hold up well in circulation, until someone by the name of John Gault devised and patented a metal casing to house the stamps, usually the 1861 issue in denominations of One, Three, Five, Ten, Twelve, 24, 30, and 90 Cents. As Gault's original design has a blank bank, some merchants began advertising through this medium by having their names embossed on them. Lot 147		Encased Postage. Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Five Cents. EP-63, HP-33. Some small dents on the front of the golden brown case are seen as a lovely centered stamp behind the problem free mica. Lot 150		Encased Postage. Mendum's Family Wine Emporium. Five Cents. EP-85, HB-178. Mendum's was located at the corner of Broadway and Cedar Street in New York. The census stands just under 20 pieces for the Five Cent Mendum's. The case is beautiful with only some crazing found at top and bottom of the mica. XF/AU. Lot 158		Encased Postage. Irving House - Hunt & Nash Ribbed Frame. Five Cents. EP-82, HB-152. Hunt & Nash were hotel proprietors of the Irving House in New York, located at Broadway & 12th Streets. Lot 159		Encased Postage. Kirkpatrick & Gault. Five Cents. EP-83, HB-162. The most "common" of the Kirkpatrick & Gaults with a census believed to be just under 50 known. The case reads, "Applications for Advertising / on this Currency / to be addressed to Kirkpatrick & Gault No. 1 Park Place NY. Some crazing to the mica and a slight bend noted at the flaps. Lot 161		Encased Postage. Pearce, Tolle & Holton. Five Cents. EP-89, HB-203. Located in Cincinnati, OH, these merchants of Wholesale Goods are real rarities today, with less than ten known. A beautiful case toned to an antique brass color with the mica having wrinkles plus a small piece missing at lower left. The stamp has retained nice color as well. Extremely Fine. Lot 162		Encased Postage. Schapker & Bussing. Five Cents. EP-91, HB-213. Schapker & Bussing were located in Evansville, IN and dealt in "Dry Goods - Carpets - Millinery" (In case you're wondering that's Hat making) located on Main Street in Evansville, IN. The case while lightly circulated has a small scratch under "Dry Goods" and the mica has a piece missing at center on the face, fortunately not affecting the stamp. Lot 163		Encased Postage. John Shilito & Co. Five Cents. EP-92, HB-218. This rarely seen issuer is another from Cincinnati, and was responsible for opening the city's first department store in 1857 housed in the largest building in town at the time. That building still exists today as a luxury apartment building. A nicely toned case with near perfect mica protecting the stamp. VF/XF. Estimated Value $400 - UP Stacks March 2012 Lot 6002.
