24 Letter/Signatures of 19th Century Notables: Charles Guiteau, John Hay, Stephen Douglas, Hannibal Hamlin, Schuyler Colfax, Edwin Stanton & More. Fine collection of notable of the 19th Century in politics, business and crime. Highlights include Charles Guiteau, autographed note initialed, assassin of President James Garfield, 4½ x 3" slip of paper written in jail dated Feb 81 that reads: "Should you desire my photograph & autograph, please send $1", initialed C.G. and then adds the following post script, "Your letter was mis laid- Write (?) again and I will answer at once." The entire note is in Guiteau's hand executed in black ink. Conveying with the note is a period sketch of Guiteau behind bars lifted from a book about the assassination. 9 x 6". (light stains and toning, still very legible) 2.) East Coast politicians, nine (9) autographs on matching sheets of paper possibly obtained at the same or near the same time which include: Reuben Eaton Fenton (New York Governor then Senator) S. F. Miller, Theodore M. Pomeroy (Speaker of the House for one day, Harriet Tubman close friend of family, caretaker of Pomeroy children) Giles Hotchkiss (NY Rep during Civil War). and James Asheton Bayard (Delaware representative and senator whose career accomplishment was negotiating the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 plus 4 more.) 3.) Stephen A. Douglas, Democrat who ran against Lincoln he of the Lincoln/Douglas debate, large clipped signature. 4.) Schuyler Colfax, VP to Ulysses Grant, signed calling card. 5.) George S. Boutwell clean clipped signature, Grant's Secretary Treasurer 6.) 2nd, and beautifully executed calling card for Reuben Eaton Fenton. 6.) Fine clipped signature by John Hay, began his political career as Lincoln's trusted private secretary and served in various high level capacities under Hayes, Garfield, McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt. 7.) William Seward Secretary of State under Lincoln & Johnson. 8.) Hannibal Hamlin Vice-President to Abraham Lincoln from 1861-1865) has elegantly signed a calling card "H. Hamlin, Maine." 9.) A clipped signature from Richard Menton Johnson as R. W. Johnson, VP to Martin Van Buren, Senator and certainly well known for (credibly) slaying Indian Chief, Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames during the War of 1812. 10.) A fine clipped signature by Edwin Stanton, Lincoln's and Andrew Johnson's Secretary of War with a notation date of April 21, 1864 in pencil under the signature.

The balance are fine signatures by Galusha A. Grow (24th Speaker of House), Michael Crawford Kerr (First Democratic Speaker of House after the Civil War), William Marcy (Secretary of War and State under Franklin Pierce), Thomas De Witt Talmage, prominent religious leader of the 19th. Century, John McCloskey (First American Cardinal and served as the first president of St. John's College, now Fordham University, beginning in 1841) and Cyrus W. Field (created the Atlantic Telegraph Co., laid first cable across Atlantic in 1858. Estimated Value $800 - 1,200

35 Letters/Signatures of 19th Century Notables/Politicians; Robert Lincoln, Richard Mentor Johnson, Hamilton Fish, Oliver Wolcott, Daniel Webster. Trove of 35 letters all from the 19th Century of politicians, notables and letters of interest. A diverse collection but many letters by influential men and women of the time. Highlights include:
1.) Thomas Hendricks, VP to Grover Cleveland, letter signed letter as Commissioner of General Land Office under Franklin Pierce, 1858. 2.) Hamilton Fish signed document as Governor of NY, in his first year, 1849, 20 years prior to serving as Secretary of State from 1869-1877. 3.) Free frank ca. 1799-1800 addressed by Olivier Wolcott Jr. as Secretary Treasurer after Hamilton, to his father, Oliver Wolcott in Conn. 4.) Horace Mann, Congressman who proved a significant advocate for public education, an ALS to the Secretary of Havlock Scholorships dated 1850 and in stunning condition. 5.) Letter signed by Daniel Webster dated May 14, 1841 while serving as Secretary of State under William Henry Harrison regretfully declining an event for Senator Nathaniel P. Talmadge of New York in the most eloquent of terms. 6.) Richard Mentor Johnson, Vice President under Martin Van Buren and the first Vice President to assume office under the provisions of the 12th Amendment. ALS dated 1849 regarding the sale of a draft leaving $250 to his credit. Johnson is credibly credited after much research of witnesses at the time and by historians as the one who killed Indian Chief, Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames in Upper Canada during the War of 1812. 7.) Caesar A. Rodney, 6th Attorney General under Jefferson and Madison and nephew to Caesar Rodney who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. 8.) Clipped signature of Theodore M. Pomeroy, who holds the record of being Speaker of the House for one day March 3-4 1869 under Andrew Johnson. 9.) Printed Message from President Andrew Jackson on the death of James Madison, June 30, 1836. 10.) Large clipped signature by Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson and Madison. 10.) Long ALS by Congressman James Garland dated May 2, 1840, Charlottesville his last year in office where he writes he can no longer support President Van Buren's Administrion. 11.) Letter from Robert Fulton Sudlow, grandson of inventor Robert Fulton, on the donation of the marble statue of his grandfather on behalf of the State of Pennsylvania to Statuary Hall in the Capitol Building which ultimately did happen. 12.) Robert Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War, letter signed to Attorney General B. H. Brewster on War Department stationery dated May 16th 1863.

Quickly listing other notables writing letters, signing letters or signed documents, Senator Joseph Anderson of Tennessee, Congressman Lewis Beach, Clergyman Robert Collyer, Senator Levi Woodbury, Representative Balie Peyton, William Polk, brother to James Polk, Vice President Henry Wilson under Ulysses Grant, Secretary of War, James Barbour under John Quincy Adams signed letter, Supreme Court Justice, Gabriel Duval receipt signed dated 1807, Secretary of Treasurer of the US pre-printed letter signed by Thomas T. Tucker 3rd Treaurer of the US, Governor Thomas Mann Randolph, Governor of Virginia, document signed, TLS by Benjamin Harris Brewster on Department of Justice letterhead dated 1883 scarce ALS by decorated Brigadier General Ward Burnett officer in the Mexican American War, a very unusual and timely letter of a physician worried about taking untested quinine for headache, and other letters of interest by news editors, writers, mining tycoons and artists.

Balance of Consignment: Free Frank signed by Daniel Webster, 1880 Land Grant and an 1896 Issue of Le Rire with art by Tououse-Lautrec. Three interesting lots. 1.) Free Frank signed "Daniel Webster, US. Senate" which would be between the years of 1845 -1850. He has signed in upper right corner to an Isiah Willliam Waverly 5 x 7" somewhat fragile. Also includes an exceptional engraving of the statesman and acclaimed orator who was the 14th and 19th Secretary of State. 2.) Extremely fine land grant dated 1880, County of Suffolk England of a woman, R. A. Chenery selling her property to a Frederick Whisstock. 20 x 28 on vellum and in pristine condition. 3.) Legendary humor magazine printed in France, frequently provocative as can be seen in the full panel illustration of explorer Henry Morton Stanley riding on the shoulders of as shritless African in the company of swells. But the back page is a fine tinted illustration by Toulouse-Loutrec "Les Grands Concerts de L'Opéra". Estimated Value $200 - 400
