Calder, Alexander. "CIRCUS". (1898 -1976) One of the most beloved and innovative American artists of the 20th Century, known the world over for his mobiles, monumental sculptures, his jewelry and his paintings. Alexander Calder was born into a family of artists - his grandfather having moved to Philadelphia from Scotland and became a world class sculptor and created the the colossal statue of William Penn atop the Philadelphia City Hall's tower. Calder's father following in his father's footsteps created many public installations and his mother a well regarded portrait artist. However both parents did not want Calder to become an artist so he enrolled to study mechanical engineering in college and became an engineer and draughtsman. But those talents eventually morphed into a desire to paint and create. He enrolled in art school and one of his first jobs was with the National Police Gazette to sketch performance from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus which began a life-long fascination.

In 1920-21 he created a mechanical circus/toys entitled "Cirque Calder" while abroad. The sculpture became something of an avant-garde hit in Paris. From there, Calder started to develop what became his kinetic sculptures and mobiles for which he is most known. In the 1950's he began creating his monumental sculptures as seen at JFK, in downtown Los Angeles, Paris, Montreal, Grand Rapids, and numerous other pieces beloved by the communities they tower over. As Calder's sculptures moved into the realm of pure abstraction in the early 1930s, so did his paintings, drawings and prints.

"Circus" (1976) gouache on paper (framed) represents one of the few works completed in the last year of his life. It is very much a theme most prevalent in both his 2-D and 3-D works. Here, Calder embraces the presence of light and music in the circus with the left corner a spotlight illuminating the rings of the circus. Conjointly, one could also see it as a booming drum over a keyboard reverberating the sounds that fill the circus performance space. Light, sound and movement proved life-long themes in all of Calder's works.

Calder's paintings and sculptures are in many permanent collections across the world. The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, has the largest body of his work. Other important museum collections include the The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.

Emil Kosa Jr. "Seeking the Shade in Ojai". (1903-1968) Emil Kosa Jr. began as an art director for 20th Century Fox starting very young in 1933 and remained in that position with the company most of his life. Emile Kosa Jr. "20th Century Fox Ranch". (1903-1968) Emil Kosa Jr. began as an art director for 20th Century Fox starting very young in 1933 and remained in that position with the company most of his life. Kosa is credited with designing the famous 20th Century Fox logo. In 1963 he won an Academy Award for his work in the mammoth spectacle CLEOPATRA. His work was widely exhibited beginning in the 1930s and in his lifetime enjoyed solo exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and other institutions.

Offered is a wonderful watercolor from the famed 20th Century Fox Ranch that Fox had initially been rented for Tarzan and How Green Was My Valley (the entire coal mining town built on the property.) In 1946 it was purchased and scores of very diverse films shot there from Viva Zapata, The Proud Ones, Love Me Tender, The Sand Pebbles, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Planet of the Apes and of course M*A*S*H. Ranch was purchased and preserved in 1976 and is now part of the Malibu Creek State Park.

Kosa was clearly involved in all of the earlier productions and his access to the ranch unrestricted. In this watercolor he has captured a rundown stable and pen, likely a set in some disrepair from an unnamed film production in the 1950s. Artwork measures 19 x 26" and beautifully framed to 29 x 37". Renate Druks. "Cat". (1921-2007) Viennese born, Los Angeles based painter, director and actress, whose upbringing there is little known. Sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s she lived in the Mexico art colony San Miguel de Allende. She bonded with other female artists living there painting women and their animal familiars, mostly cats.
Anais Nin was a longtime friend, and Druks was a muse for two peculiar little books written by Nin later in her career, Portrait in Three Dimensions, and Collages.
But she became a bit of a sensation, famous for being famous surrounding herself with talented eccentrics such as Kenneth Anger whose friendship with Druks inspired some of his films.

Offered is a lovely cat painting gifted to actress Doris Dowling who was married to Artie Shaw from 1952-56. This painting is from their son, Jonathan Shaw, renowned counter-culture opinion maker, author and artist who has created a most unique Letter of Authenticity incorporating his signature and very colorful logo stating the painting is from his personal collection.

Painting was in an ill fitting frame causing just some slight chipping to very edges of panel otherwise fine. 10 x 8" with Druks signing in lower left border. Estimated Value $800 - 1,000

Roualt, Georges. Juge (Chapon e Rouault 289). (1871-1958) Important and significant French artist of the first half of the 20th Century. Georges Roualt captured faces of his fellow citizens on the fringes of French Society particularly those of dance hall women, prostitutes, and circus performers, specifially clowns. He also made several important paintings of judges which expressed his skepticism and criticism of the systems in place for justice. "If I have made judges such lamentable figures, it is doubtless because I betrayed the anguish which I feel at the sight of a human being who has to pass judgment on other men. The judges themselves I could not condemn."

Goldberg Auctions is pleased to offer this important work entitled "Juge" (The Judge). Ink and colors on paper. Art was originally over ten years ago but has been removed from aging frame and glass with artwork still professionally affixed at outermost edges to mat for protection with a more recent addition of clean acid free panel to protect the back. 13 x 10" is in excellent condition with no issues. Signed in lower left corner "G Roualt 1939". Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000

Walfrido (Walfrido Garcia). "The World Awakens". Walfrido, born in the Philippines in 1966, son of acclaimed artist, Edgardo F. Garcia, was raised in California where surfing and his father's tutelage translated into painting coastal scenes alive with light. At only 23 he was signed to be a featured artist at Wyland Galleries joining James Coleman, William Deshazo, Gregg Hamby and David Wight. Since then, his career has flourished bringing him a global audience and countless fans.

Offered is a most ambitious work dated 2004, by Walfrido on the verso. A term has been coined for his approach called "romantic luminism" and one would be hard pressed to find a better example than the original oil on canvas presented here. This is a large work, the canvas measuring 24 x 36" and features a classic view of the tropical landscape that is the island of Maui, the suns rays breaking through a cloud cover over the mountains. A photo of the painting remains on Walfrido's website as a reference with few others achieving the spiritual embrace which inspired this work.

Unknown, Late 18th, Early 19th Century. Still Life, Flowers. Dutch floral still life paintings were a genre spanning over two centuries, with an appeal that has showed no signs of abating. These works were explosions of radiant, intensely colored blooms with sinuous foliage, massed closely together; fabulous specimens as if cultivated by a divinely inspired florist. But no one during these 200+ years could cultivated such majestic blossoms. This, of course, is the point about Dutch flower paintings: despite their breathtaking illusionism, detailing dazzling precision of individual blooms, they do not reflect reality due in no small part that many of the blossoms could not be available all at the same time. The idea was that the flowers depicted could be enjoyed by enthusiasts, long after their real-life counterparts had faded away. Implicit within this notion was the perception that earthly life is transitory and as fragile as a flower petal.

Offered is one of the finest examples of this genre Goldberg Auctions has ever offered. A monumental work having tulips, hyacinths, tree blossoms, paper whites, Summer fruit and fall foliage and grasses all in vibrant shades of whites, blues, pinks, greens, reds, tans and yellows. Painting measures 28 x 40" and is magnificently framed in gilt carved wood 39 x 50" Previous owners had the painting restored to stabilize canvas and crazing as well as the frame sparing no expense. Only the slightest evidence of restoration is visible when viewed closely. A magnificent work.

Due to size and the magnificent frame, outside shipping only. But we can recommend a fined art packing and shipping company that is reasonable and professional. Estimated Value $2,000 - 4,000
