George Hurrell: Hollywood Master of Portrait Photography, "Hurrell III" Veronica Lake, Anna May Wong, Barrymore, Crawford, Cagney & More (1904-1992) Credited for creating and conveying the glamour of Hollywood, George Hurrell was second to no one when it came to capturing through shadows and light the near incandescent beauty of his female subjects, and the matinee idol looks of his male portraits. His images are in museums world wide, his legacy equal to those he photographed.

From Hurrell III: A mint portfolio of 10 signed, limited edition, silver gelatin prints, actual with the actual image is 19 x 15½", the sheets just slightly larger. Hurrell's signature and edition notation 164/250 can be found in ink along bottom white margin. Photos with protective acetate overlays are housed in a burgundy cloth clamshell box which also includes a COA, an introduction to Hurrell by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. testimonials, technical details and a printed acknowledgement by Hurrell that the photographs conform to his exact standards.

Hurrell III is likely the most in demand of the portfolios issued due to the portraits of Anna May Wong and Veronica Lake where individually, those portraits alone can command $800 to $1000 each, masterpieces both. The other performers featured are also quite excellent and include Joan Crawford, James Cagney, John Barrymore, Gene Tierney, a stunning Ann Sheridan, Charles Boyer, Gilbert Roland and premiere concert violinist Jascha Heifetz who actually appeared in three films in his career. These photos were taken between 1932-1944 and the edition issued in 1980.

This portfolio was submitted for auction still sealed in its original shipping box. Opened only to inspect and note the edition number. Mint in box. Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,500

Rare Disneyana: Walt Disney Illustrated Signature by Top Art Director and Animator Bob Moore, March 30, 1957. Walt Disney School, Anaheim, CA. Program for the dedication ceremonies of Walt Disney School Signed in red pencil on the front cover, 8½x5½" (Anaheim, California, 30 Mar. 1957). Disney is listed as a speaker on the program. Two newspaper photographs show Disney speaking to the young people at the dedication and the newspaper account states that Disney spoke and that the school's multipurpose room was decorated by murals using Disney characters, which were designed and executed by Disney's top art director, Bob Moore.

Bob Moore was enlisted to supervise and contribute to the Disney murals in the school's assembly room and was on hand to sign autographs for Walt Disney as he would in animating his name exclusive to the opening of the school. Moore joined Disney in 1940 in the animation department, but soon moved into the marketing division. He became advertising art director in 1951, a position he held for three decades.

This is actually a quite rare piece of Disney history. The Magnolia School District realized with the influx of families moving to Anaheim more elementary schools would be needed. The Walt Disney School and the Jonas Salk School both opening in 1957 saw the transfer of 1700 student, the largest in California history.

Also included is the folio and photo of the school's first, first grade class as well as original newspaper clippings from the opening.

Rare Lana Turner 9 Page Typed Letter (Carbon Copy) For "Modern Screen" About Her Plans On Raising Daughter Cheryl Crane. Lana Turner (1921-1995) enjoyed a 50 year career in the public eye as a model, an actress and having one of the most publicized personal life Hollywood has ever seen. Quick history: Turner was a huge star but not the best at picking partners. She married seven times (dated countless) and had a daughter, Cheryl Crane while married to B actor Steven Crane. Jump to husband four and she married Lex Barker (Tarzan and Westerns) who is frequently mentioned in these 9 pages. In this "original" onion skin carbon copy, envelope post marked November 27, 1956, Turner tells about the difficulty of raising a young teenager and cites several challenges of normal adolescent behavior. Turner pours her heart out in these pages, but understand, the content was being used for an article in Modern Screen so naturally it's as much about Turner as it is her daughter.

This is a find because of what happened less than a year later. Turner, ordered Barker out of her house when Crane revealed she had been (allegedly in her autobiography) sexually assaulted by Barker. Turner then started dating handsome gangster, Johnny Stompanato, when one evening during a violent argument with Turner, Crane came running into the bedroom and stabbed Stompanato dead. This led to one of the most publicized trials of the 1950s where Turner in defense of her daughter "gave the performance of her career" while on the stand. As for Cheryl Crane, after some difficult times, found love, business success as well a a best selling author.

This carbon of the original letter was sent to Glenn Rose, Lana Turner's and many other notables, publicity agent- actually quite the legend himself. Was this a mutually composed piece by Modern Screen with direct input by Lana Turner, the copy then sent to Rose for approval………….probably. That's just how fan magazines worked back then. (9 pages, somewhat fragile, with rough edges to right side) Hollywood history at its best. Estimated Value $200 - 400

Rare Warner Brothers Vitaphone Sound Equipment Case, Superb Artifact from the Earliest Days of "Talkies". The Vitaphone was a sound-on-disc system developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories and Western Electric. The name "Vitaphone" derived from the Latin and Greek words, respectively, for "living" and "sound". Warner Brothers was the first studio incorporate the technology and weathered the inconsistent quality of the system especially in synchronizing the audio to the images on the screen. Still, Warner Brothers prevailed and produced over 100 short subjects including Don Juan with John Barrymore that had a full score and sound effects which was well received

But it was synchronized singing by Al Jolson and a couple of a lines of dialogue using the Vitaphone system that film historians use as the birth of "Talkies". Ultimately Vitaphone lost the format war between synchronized recording VS sound on film. But its mark on film history is undisputed

Offered is a rare mid-1920s Vitaphone sound equipment case. Clearly built to withstand quite a bit of weight as evidenced by the metal clad corners, reinforced edges and triple strapped handle. The facing side still has the signature Vitaphone logo and is clearly legible with a few rubs to the center. Below Vitaphone is the RCA logo and "WB-1" stenciled at bottom and on both sides of the case. Inside the case is lined with its original heavy black ribbed fabric as well as a very specific wood rack. Excellent condition with scrapes dings, and oxidation comensurate with its 100 years in age.

A fine, rare artifact from the early days of the American film industry and certainly a find for the film enthusiast. Estimated Value $600 - 1,500

Original, Production Used Clapperboard for KILLER RULES and AGAINST THE GRAIN. A clapperboard is a device used in filmmaking and video production to assist in synchronizing of picture and sound, and to designate and mark the various scenes and takes as they are filmed. Classic slate and chalk clapperboards have long been a very recognizable symbol (now emoji) for Hollywood. But as film technology advanced so did the clapperboard and most modern production use boards with electronic time codes and the like. This original, production used clapboard is from the 1993 made for television crime action film starring Sela Ward, which was directed by Robert Ellis Miller (Oscar nominated REUBEN, REUBEN and HAWKS), cinematography by veteran Ennio Guarnieri. Clapboard has been professionally shadow-boxed and displays beautifully. 18 x 18 x 2¼". A partial second and unframed clapperboard is included from the television series about Texas Football in 1993-94, AGAINST THE GRAIN. This is a more modern clapper that is digitally time coded. This is just the face that is mounted on the tablet with details of the director and cameraman, but still has the clapper attached. Estimated Value $150 - 300

Two letters are to Irving Hoffman, a Broadway publicist and columnist for the Hollywood Reporter. Berlin writes to him regarding a song he has written called "Israel" but couldn't get clearance due to Al Jolson having written song entitled the same. Letter is dated December 1, 1959. In a 1967 letter, Berlin writes Hoffman about additions he has made to his Broadway musical "Call Me Madame" and closes hilariously with "Sometimes when you are in the mood, I'll let you hear the tunes. But what the hell do you know about music anyway? Love, Irving"

One letter is to Harry Brand, legendary publicist for 20th Century Fox from the 1930-1960 who made Shirley Temple the most famous child star in history, Betty Grable a GI Joe pinup girl and Marilyn Monroe a sex goddess. Berlin references Julie Andrews that "Metro had finally signed her, references a mutual friend getting a great apartment (on point for a New Yorker) and "It took 60 years to get from a 15¢ flop house on the Bowery to a house on Beekman Place."

Six letters are to Larry Hoffman, son of Irving where they speak of Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, a birthday wish, some gossip and a drawing given to Hoffman by Berlin.

Eight of the letters are in pristine condition. The letter regarding the song "Israel" to Irving Hoffman has one staple very slight soiling and toning. Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000

Irving Berlin Collection: Two Signed Letters, Original Birthday Composition and Additional Lyrics to a Friend for 25 Years, Samuel Hoffman (Rare) (1888-1989) Hailed as one of the greatest songwriters in American History, the acclaim and popularity of Berlin is without equal composing over 1500 songs in his 60 year career including the scores for 20 original Broadway shows and 15 original Hollywood films. Irving Berlin was a close friend to a school teacher, Samuel Hoffman for over 25 years. In 1957, Berlin composed and recorded a song to Hoffman on the occasion of his 81st Birthday which appears to have been on or about July 14th. Only one recording was made and that was exclusively or Mr. Hoffman which was entitled "Sam, Sam The Man What Am".

Letter measures 10½ x 7½" and is on his fine letterhead (by Cranes Crest) signed boldly in blue fountain pen ink. On July 13, 1959 Irving Berlin sent Mr. Hoffman a new verse for his original birthday song which reads

"Sam, Sam the man what am
You still are on the beam
Eighty-three --- will simply be
A day for more ice cream
When your first plate is through
Order one more or two
Happy Birthday to you"

With love,
Irving "

On smaller letterhead, 7 ¼ x 5¾" and is signed in blue fountain pen ink. This letter was also laminated and remains pristine. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500
