Lot 1
Two Signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Clymer and
Charles Carroll + Remarkable Letter, Revolutionary War.
Two signers of the Declaration of Independence:
1.) George Clymer: Manuscript check payable to a Lynde Catlin for $225 endorsed over to Clymer on verso and signed by Clymer, dated 1805. 3½ x 8" (two tiny tears at top edge and a corner tip tear). Signature very clean and distinct.

2.) Charles Carroll of Carrollton: Two holograph notations on one document. Inside page is 7 lines in Carroll's hand and 9 lines on the verso, both unsigned, but clearly in his handwriting. 8 x 6½". Very clean and dated 1802.

3.) Remarkable ALS by Edward Sherburne, to his brother, Samuel Sherburne (in Portsmouth, New Hampshire dated Mar. 29, 1773.) Edward writes to his brother who is clearly of means and connections desperate for a recommendation and position in the Continental Army and financial aid in the sum of 650 pounds while he attempts to gain a lieutenancy in hopes of being stationed in Quebec. The letter is almost cringe inducing, opening with Edward writing as if almost entitled to assistance in getting a position in the Army (since it was Samuel's recommendation) with the closing comments: "I do not insist upon your answering this letter but by giving me a private audience to you. The sooner you do this, the sooner you relieve me from my perplext mind the sooner I shall no (know) what to resolve on."

The Sherburne family legacy in New Hampshire had broad roots both in politics and the military in the 1600s to 1800s. The death of an Edward Sherburne is mentioned in "The History Carper" as being "a youthful soldier and aide-de-camp to General John Sullivan (who was stationed in Quebec) and from one of the most prominent families in New Hampshire". Estimated Value $500 - 800
