Small Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 645
1858. Small letters. NGC graded MS-64+. Nicely toned on both sides. A handsome Flying Eagle cent with great luster and a solid strike, particularly across the tail feathers and wings. The surfaces show precious few signs of contact and are virtually of gem quality. The Small Letters variety has AM of AMERICA clearly separated, while the Large Letters variety has these two letters touching at their base serifs. It seems unusual that the mint would change this elegant design so soon after it was launched, these Flying Eagle cents were popular since the day they were released into circulation, yet after barely two years and a few months, the Indian cents were launched in 1859. Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200

Lot 646
1859. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned. Mint made imperfection in the obverse field which is quite minor. The Philadelphia Mint was having difficulty working with the hardness of the nickel alloy (only twelve percent) with the primary copper alloy (88%) to create these planchets. This one shows great color with the usual copper toning areas against the white backdrop of the nickel alloy. The strike is solid, with all four diamonds present, and the feather detail complete right out to the tips of each feather in the headdress. This is a one year type coin too, as the reverse design changed in 1860 with the addition of a small shield at the top of the reverse, accenting the open wreath. A top quality example of this sought after date (PCGS # 2052) Estimated Value $850 - 900

1870. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red. CAC. PQ. A lovely gem proof. The surfaces offer good contrast between the perfectly mirrored fields and frosted devices. No stray or detracting marks are present, and the devices are all needle sharp. An early proof issue which is seldom found at all, let alone at the gem level with full original Red color. An oustanding coin that any specialist will long appreciate for its endearing quality and appeal. Only 1,000 struck. Pop 30; only 6 graded finer for Proof Red at PCGS, 1 in 65+, 5 in 66. (PCGS # 2299) Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100

Lot 667
1955. Doubled die obverse. PCGS graded AU-50. A very nice example. This is one of the most popular of the doubled dies due to its extremely dramatic doubling, relative rarity and long inclusion in the general Lincoln Cent albums. Collectors far and wide have searched through countless bags of cents looking for an example, and of course these are rarely found. Many in fact were released through cigarette vending machines in 1955, as the cost of a pack of cigarettes was 23 cents, so two pennies would be tucked into the celephane wrapper as change for a quarter--and the vast majority of these prized doubled dies were released into circulation through this method (PCGS # 2825) Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100
