Lot 550
1794 S-55 R2 F15. Significantly sharper where properly struck but there is weakness at the bottom of the obverse and the opposing area at the top of the reverse. Apparently the dies were not in proper axial alignment (die faces not parallel). While the details over most of the coin are consistent with a VF20 or better grade, the date and most of STATES are weak. Mostly glossy medium chocolate speckled with darker chocolate and olive brown toning. The surfaces are mostly smooth but there are a few very tiny flakes or pits on both sides, mostly in the poorly struck areas. A minor rim bruise over the E in LIBERTY can help identify this piece. MDS, Breen state II, with die cracks on the obverse. Estimated Value $600 - UP

1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap VG8. Slightly glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. Looks perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals extremely faint granularity in the fields and protected areas. No marks, only traces of dirt in a few places. The date is easily readable although the 6 is a bit weak due to the usual swelling in that area, and the legends are complete. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Lot 557
1798 S-186 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Sharpness mint state but it may have been dipped long ago, now toned a very attractive frosty dark steel brown and olive with lustrous very faded red in protected areas. The surfaces are essentially flawless; void of spots, stains, or contact marks. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip near the rim behind the head, as struck. This cent has choice mint state eye appeal, and the PCGS grade and CAC approval reflects the natural look of the toning. Sharply struck M-LDS, Breen state VII, with a strong cud break connecting the 00 in the denominator to the rim below. The very shallow low spot on the bottom of the neck is a die flaw that is always present in the later die states of the variety. Graded AU50 and CC#2 in the 1991 Noyes census, his photo #28217. Our grade is AU55. A solid condition census example of this difficult variety. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; only 1 example graded higher in MS-64 BN at PCGS for the variety. Estimated Value $9,000 - UP

1800 S-200 R3 VF25+. Sharpness VF35 but there is a short scratch in the field near the rim before the face, a minor rim bruise below the 00 in the date, and a small rim bruise or dull rim nick over OF. The scratch does catch your eye but the other defects do not and overall the eye appeal of this cent is nice. Frosty uniform dark steel and olive brown with satiny fields in protected areas. MDS, Breen state III, with an obvious bulge at STAT and die clashmarks on the reverse but no die crack on the obverse. A decent example of a variety that seldom comes this nice; at the lower end of the condition census. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

Lot 560
1801 NC-2 R7 Fair-2. Perhaps a point sharper but dark steel and covered with fine roughness mixed with some faint horizontal scratches on the portrait. No verdigris or notable marks. The date is clear and half of the legends on the reverse are easily readable. The cud break at ES-O is clear. This extremely rare variety combines the obverse die that was used to strike the S-219 3-Error Reverse variety and a new reverse die that broke almost immediately when it was placed into service. Only 10 examples of the NC-2 die marriage are known and most of those are in very low grade. The finest grades F15 and brought $16,675 in our sale of the Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. Collection (9/6/209:415). A heavily worn Basal State-1+ example brought $2645 as lot 416 in that same sale. A very rare opportunity for advanced collectors of the series.
