Lot 496
1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793 NGC Fine Details Environmental Damage. The highpoints of the devices are smooth but the fields and protected areas are covered with fine roughness hidden under glossy dark chocolate and olive brown toning. There is a hint of rose overtone in protected areas on the obverse. No verdigris and just a few minor marks. The only notable mark is a dull, shallow scratch hidden in the toning left of the fraction. The date and legends are easily readable but not strong. The edge device is strong including the leaf with upturned points following DOLLAR. E-MDS, Breen state III, without any bulge in the field below the cap. Our grade is net G6 but it has the details and eye appeal of a slightly higher grade. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

1794 S-19a R5+ Head of 1793 G4. Several points sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness on all but the highpoints, which are reasonably smooth. Dark steel brown and olive. No verdigris and the only mark is a small rim bruise over the R in LIBERTY. The date is weak but readable as are most of the legends. The edge lettering is complete and clear, and the downturned leaf following DOLLAR is strong. An acceptable example of this very tough Head of 1793 variety. Estimated Value $700 - UP

The surfaces are mostly smooth but a glass reveals some tiny planchet chips scattered over both sides. No corrosion or verdigris. The only notable marks are several light rim bruises on both sides, a minor scratch hidden in the toning left of the date, a small chip out of the planchet near the rim off the chin, and a dull nick at the junction of the feet of the E & N in CENT. MDS with minor swelling in the field below the cap. The upturned leaf following DOLLAR is not visible in the holder, but the attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Our grade is net VG10. 1794 S-20b R5 Head of 1793 NGC graded VG10. Sharpness at least VF20 but covered with uniform microscopic porosity (which is not severe enough to deter the NGC graders from assigning a real grade). No marks or verdigris. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Dark olive brown and steel. The surfaces are a bit dull and this cent appears to have never been brushed. The edge lettering is deeply impressed and the upturned leaf following DOLLAR is bold. Early die state before any bulge in the field off the upper part of the chin. Our grade is net VG10. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; 1 finer in 12. Estimated Value $4,500 - UP

1794 S-21 R3 PCGS graded XF40, CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy medium brown. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. Just minor contact marks including a dull diagonal nick in the field before the nose and a small chip out of the rim right of the second S in STATES. LDS, Breen state V, with all the die cracks mentioned by Breen (although his final "crack" from the N in CENT to the bow is really a die clashmark). A very nice mid-grade example with outstanding eye appeal. Our grade is VF25 Choice. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 12 finer. 1794 S-22 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Frosty steel and chocolate brown with traces of mint luster showing in protected areas. Essentially a flawless cent with light wear on the highpoints. The best identifying mark is a small diagonal nick on the end of the chin, but it certainly does not catch your eye. LDS, Breen state VIII, with flowlined fields on both sides and all the die cracks and "Mounds" described by Breen. A very nice cent. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #62283. Our grade is EF40+ Choice. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1794 S-23 R4+ PCGS graded VF35. Rather glossy light olive and steel brown with a puff of lighter tan toning in the field before the face. The surfaces are smooth and there is no trace of corrosion or verdigris. However there are a few rim light bruises, the strongest of these at K-9 on the obverse. The surfaces are covered with a thin layer of natural oxidation and it looks like this cent has never been brushed or "improved" in any way. LDS, Breen state V, with numerous die cracks on the obverse. Graded VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#11 in the Noyes census, his photo #62834. Our grade is net VF20. 1794 S-24 R1 VF25+. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas. Flowline luster shows in protected areas, especially on the reverse, and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a small rim bruise below the 9 in the date and a trio of old scratches below AM in AMERICA. Otherwise this cent is flawless and would deserve a higher grade. M-LDS, Breen state V, with obvious die flowlines in the fields and two die cracks on the obverse. The center of the reverse is bulged outward slightly, typical of the later die states of the variety, but ONE CENT is still complete and clear. Comes with an important provenance. Estimated Value $1,750 - UP

1794 S-25 R3 PCGS graded XF40, CAC Approved. Glossy olive brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless except for an uneven strike. The strike on the left sides is strong while it is considerably weaker on the right, the result of dies that were out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). The weakly struck area shows many of the usual tiny planchet chips that usually strike out, and the tops of MERI are weak. MDS, Breen state III, with a doubled set of die clashmarks showing on both sides but no die cracks. An attractive cent, just imperfectly struck. Graded VF25 in the Del Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net VF20 for the uneven strike and tied for CC#10, his photo #61957. Our grade is VF20+, close to VF25. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. The best identifying mark is a dull dent on the upper half of the I in LIBERTY. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with strong die cracks on the reverse. Our grade is F15+, very close to VF20. 1794 S-32 R2 PCGS graded AU53. Frosty dark olive brown and steel. Mostly smooth showing only a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices, but the toning is dark and the surfaces are a bit dull. This cent looks like it has never been brushed or given any "TLC." There are traces of fine verdigris on both sides including a spot between the I & T in UNITED, another patch right of the second S in STATES, and specks right of the F in OF. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack through the first S in STATES into the wreath and bold overlapping die clashmarks on the reverse. The strike is uneven which is often seen on this variety due to axially misaligned dies (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). In addition the reverse is rotated 75 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. As a result the right edge of the obverse and opposing lower right edge of the reverse are weakly struck while everything else is strong. Our grade is net VF35. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 6 finer. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1794 S-35 R5 NGC graded XF40. A sharp, attractive cent but there are patches of fine porosity on the obverse, mostly in the field over the bust tip, in the field at the lower curls, and at TY. The toning in the few roughened areas perfectly matches the rest of the coin so the eye appeal is unaffected. No verdigris and the color is an attractive and rather glossy uniform medium brown and light olive. The only notable signs of contact are a shallow scrape from the cheek to the chin, a few tiny digs at the ear, and a pair of thin nicks under the eye. LDS, Breen state VIII, with all the obverse die cracks strong. This is the plate coin used to illustrate the obverse in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. Called net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net F15 and tied for CC#6, his photo #32944. Our grade is net VF20. A sharply detailed example of this rare variety that has decent eye appeal in spite of the minor roughness and marks. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance, about as good as they come. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1794 S-41 R3 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with splashes of olive brown toning on both sides. The surfaces are mostly smooth but there are traces of microscopic roughness in a few of the more darkly toned areas. The only marks are a rim dent below the 94, a rim nick over the left side of the T in LIBERTY, and a small planchet flake on the N in ONE (as struck). Later die state, Breen VII, with extensive die cracks on the reverse but none on the obverse. The edge is neatly inked "H-14" (which is an error since this variety is Hays-19/Maris-14). Regardless it comes with a marvelous provenance that has been traced back well over 100 years. Previously housed in an NGC slab graded AU50 (NGC label #508574-001 included, and it shows the attribution and Rasmussen provenance). 1794 S-52 R6- PCGS VG Detail Graffiti. The obverse is glossy medium brown and light olive while the reverse is a darker shade of olive brown on the devices and lighter chocolate in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth, void of any notable corrosion or verdigris, but there are some marks. The notable marks are a dozen old, light scratches on the face into the field under TY plus a nick on the forehead and a planchet chip at the top of the C in CENT (as struck). Only the planchet chip is distracting and the overall eye appeal is decent for the grade. EDS, Breen state I, before the die crack on the obverse. The date is clear and the legends are complete except for ES-OF-AMER which are weak at best. Graded G6 by Del Bland. Our grade is VG7+ sharpness net G5+. A wholly acceptable if imperfect example of this very rare variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

The date is clear and the legends are complete except for weakness on the left side of the reverse. MDS, Breen state II, with fine die cracks on the obverse. Our grade is F15. The attribution and Lou Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 8 finer. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

1794 S-62 R4+ PCGS graded VF30. Attractive glossy chocolate brown. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but the planchet is covered with very faint roughness that is mostly hidden under the glossy toning. The devices are a few shades lighter than the fields giving this piece an attractive two-tone appearance. No verdigris and the only marks are some very faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the obverse. Scarce EDS, Breen state I, before the large cud break that formed rather early on the left side of the obverse. Graded F15 net VG10 by Noyes, his photo #59914. Del Bland graded it F12.
