Lot 957
Two Antique Cast Iron "Dinah" Mechanical Banks Ca. 1922, Black Americana. Two (2) cast iron, mechanical "Dinah" coin banks. A look back in history to a completely different times, Black Americana" pieces are important in chronicling and recording societal norms of the past irrespective how ugly. The Dinah bank was manufactured by John Harper Co. LTD of Willenhall, England and were successful. A coin is placed in her hand, and with a push of the lever on the back of her arm Dinah raises her hand and swallows the coin as her eyes roll back into her head. The "Dinah" in pink is fully functional with the bottom of the bank still having its cast iron plate with small holes, held in by a single screw and marked, "Made in England". The other is missing her arm, but has base plate.
Beware of reproductions but these are authentic and existing paint is original 6½ x 6 x 5". Estimated Value $400 - UP
This is a unique piece of history, and reminds us of a very different time! Manufactured by John Harper Co. The body is a two-piece casting and the arm is a two-piece casting as well. This particular bank is set aside from other similar banks by her short sleeves.
