Lot 485
1793 C-3 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF20. Rather frosty medium brown blending to light chocolate with a swipe of dark olive brown toning near the rim right of the lower curls. The surfaces are perfectly smooth but slightly dull from a thin layer of natural oxidation, and it appears this half cent has never been brushed. The only marks are a fine, very old scratch hidden against the profile from the forelock down to the lips. The scratch is effectively obscured by a bit of dirt making the scratch look like microscopic crud tucked up against the profile. The scratch is barely visible under strong magnification, clearest at the lips. MDS. The date and legends are complete and clear. Our grade is F12. The attribution and Dr. Cadden Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35009. Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods PCGS graded VF20. Rather glossy steel and olive brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No verdigris or notable roughness, just a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a fine, old scratch under RTY and a minor rim bruise at AM in AMERICA. In addition there is a thin planchet fissure or void along the rim under the lower curls, and this curious feature has been seen on a few other examples of the variety. The date and legends are complete and strong, and the Periods feature is bold in both places. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks at the lower curls. A nice mid-grade example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is F15. The attribution and Dr. Cadden Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1793 S-12 R6- Liberty Cap PCGS graded G6. Rather glossy dark steel brown and olive with slightly lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals microscopic roughness hidden under the glossy toning in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a tiny vertical scratch at the right bottom of the 7 and a small planchet chip in the leaves under TA in STATES. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for the usual weakness on ONE CENT due to the obvious swelling in the center of the reverse (which formed quickly and forced the very early retirement of the reverse die). MDS, Breen state II. The swelling on the reverse is strong but a couple letters of ONE CENT are still visible, albeit quite weak. Graded VG8 sharpness net G6 and tied for CC#10 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #26606. Our grade is G6+, close to VG7. An important cent that comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Dr. Cadden Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35486. Estimated Value $12,500 - UP

1793 S-16 R6 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VG10. Choice glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and the planchet is nearly flawless, especially nice for a well-circulated grade. The only notable marks are a few shallow nicks grouped under the R in LIBERTY, a short hairline scratch in the field left of the cap, a pinprick over the 7 in the date, and a dull nick on the rim over the first A in AMERICA. The date is clear and legends are complete. LDS with the crack down through Y clear and swelling at the N in CENT. The reverse is rotated 165 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot orientation. Called VG7 by Bland and listed as tied for CC#6 in his census. Noyes says G6 and also tied for CC#6, his photo #20388. Our grade is VG7 and CC#7.
