Lot 653
1800. NGC graded AU-55. Toned with a blush of delicate gold which deepens slightly around the rims. This is a very tough coin to find in high grades (or any grade for that matter!) as the original mintage was modest and survivors are downright scarce. This lovely 1800 dime offers nice surfaces, a solid strike with all of Liberty's hair strands nicely formed and intact, as well as the reverse details on the eagle. A prize that is destined for an advanced early dime collection. Mostly untoned. Just a hint of reverse light tone. Only 21,760 struck. Pop 7; 9 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000

Lot 654
1804. 13 Stars on Reverse. JR-1, Rarity 5. NGC graded AU-53. Even light blue and gold toning on both sides which shows a bit lighter on the devices so they are accented and well framed against the deeper fiields. This is a really rare date for early dime collectors to obtain. There are two distinct die varieties of 1804 dimes, this one has 13 reverse stars over the eagle, the other has 14 stars over the eagle. Both are rare with about 35-40 pieces known in all grades. Thus a total of about 75 1804 dimes are known. Needless to say this incredible AU53 coin is one of the finest to survive and will be a highlight in any advanced collection The finest graded at PCGS of the 13 star reverse is also AU55, so this coin is right near the top of those known. Of course the 1804 date is magical in coins, with the immense popularity of the 1804 silver dollar rarity, but this dime certainly holds its own as the rarest early dime date by a good margin. An important condition rarity that is destined for a fantastic collection. Only 8,265 struck. Pop 1; only 1 example graded finer in 55 at NGC. Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000

1807. JR-1, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-65. Frosty and mostly untoned save for a gentle glaze of tawny gold over lustrous fields and frosty devices. This is the final year of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design, and a type and date which is seldom offered in full mint condition. Here is one that is a gem! Extraordinary quality for the specialist who demands one of the finest seen. The strike is fairly sharp, and this is a middle to early die state for this prized issue, with minor die clashing seen in the obverse fields, the reverse fields are tight and smooth. An amazing coin in terms of quality for the specialist! Pop 12; only 2 examples graded higher in 66 at NGC. Estimated Value $22,000 - 25,000

1814. Large date. JR-4. Rarity-2. PCGS graded MS-65. Frosty and lightly toned with wonderfully original antique russet gold hues that accent the stars and devices, while the fields and central devices are bright silver and frosty. Amazing quality when examined, with no signs of handling or distracitng marks, as one expects for a gem grade. This is quite exceptional for an early dime of this era, and precious few are around that merit such a lofty grade based on their preservation. Here is one that does! The reverse die shows several thin die cracks as it was truly on its last legs when this coin was struck, with several cracks connecting within the fine vertical shield lines near the center of that side. Quite impressive quality, and a delightfuly appealing coin. Pop 7; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 5 in 66. (PCGS # 4488) Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500

1823, 3 over 2. Small E's. JR-1, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-65. Rainbow toning around the edges of both sides with lovely teal and blue through the stars, russet along the star centers. Liberty herself is bright silver and frosty. Matching on the reverse, with splendid clean surfaces and solid eye appeal. This coin may well be tied with one other as the finest seen by NGC and is no doubt high in the Condition Census for the variety and date. It is interesting to note that several obverse dies were engraved and dated 1822, but only one obverse die was used to coin the meager output that year, so when 1823 and 1824 rolled around, the leftover new 1822 obverse dies were overdated with a 3 for this issue, and a 4 for the 1824/2 issue. An historical and elegant coin all in one package. Semi reflective fields. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1827. JR-5, Rarity-3. NGC graded MS-66. A fully white gem with deep frost on the devices and satiny luster in the fields. Well struck and choice in every regard. The surfaces are so clean that this amazing example must have been set aside soon after it was coined, and remains untouched to this day. The fields are devices are free of all but the most minute signs of contact. Undoubtedly one of the finest to survive of this variety and date. Important as a type coin as well to represent the large diameter Capped Bust dimes. Pop 5; 4 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67, 1 in 67 Prooflike. Estimated Value $14,000 - UP

1829. Small 10¢. JR-7, Rarity 1. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely blue and gold toning which is somewhat thick and spans the entire coin. Frosty luster beneath, which shows when examined under a light. Fully struck by the dies, with each star showing full radial lines, as well as rounded high points on Liberty's curls. The surfaces are handsome, as one expects for the lofty gem grade, and this is one of the finer examples known of this date and clearly for the variety too. Pop 1; only 1 example graded finer in 67 at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 38832) Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,600

1844. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly untoned save for lovely antique pale gold around the rims and central devices. Liberty herself is quite frosty and bright silver, matched by the wreath on the reverse. This is a key date issue, known as the "Little Orphan Annie" dime since the 1940s when a writer hoarded a few of these and then named this issue for the comic strip Little Orphan Annie that was in its heyday. These 1844 dimes have long been known to be scarce or rare, so the name has stuck over the years, and collectors high and low search for one of these. Rarely are any found even approaching mint state, and this near gem is certainly one of the very finest known. A delight for the specialist who appreciates both rarity and quality, as key dates like this always bring commanding premiums when offered. Low mintage date of 72,500 pieces struck. Pop 3; only 1 example graded higher in 65 at NGC. Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

1859. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. Sure looks better than the assigned grade, with near perfect surfaces and unbroken frost on the devices which stand tall against the mirror fields. Add to this the absolutely stunning pale blue and yellow gold toning on both sides and you have epic eye appeal. The visual impact is incredible here. This is also the plate coin used by PCGS for the Proof issue of this date as its eye appeal is truly off the charts. Furthermore, this is the sole finest certified by PCGS in the Proof category, but there is a small cluster of 4 in the Cameo designation. Wonderful rainbow toning on both sides. CAC approval adds to the overall desirability of this condition rarity. Only 800 struck. Pop 1; tied with four PR-67 Cameo examples for the highest graded at PCGS. Lot 672
1859-S. NGC graded AU-55. Totally white with soft silver surfaces throughout and just a couple of flecks of deeper toning found with some effort. The strike is sharp too, with all the details clear on Liberty and the surrounding stars. This is truly rare date in the Liberty Seated dime series, and with a low mintage of only 60,000 pieces, which of course were struck right near the outbreak of the Civil War, attrition had to be high for this issue. Today there are around 200 of these that exist in all grades, and only a couple are truly in mint condition. Here is one of the nicer slightly circulated examples which will command ample respect in its own right. A prized rarity when found this nice and worthy of a strong bid. Pop 4; 2 finer in 62. Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000

1872-CC. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly white with satiny luster in the fields. This is a key date issue which is nearly impossible to find at all, let alone in high grade like this stunning specimen. The surfaces are smooth and attractive on both sides, with minimal handling marks from brief circulation. Softly struck on the right obverse side on OF AMER which is paritally visible, perhaps there was some grease in the die when this one was coined. As one of the key Carson City coins of the Liberty Seated dime collection, this high grade example must be seriously considered if you are building a high grade date and mint collection. Low mintage of only 35,480. Pop 3; tied for the finest examples graded at NGC. Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000

1916-D. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Bands. Here is a gorgeous antique toned gem of the key date of the Mercury dime series. The strike is needle sharp throughout, including the all important central bands on the reverse. The toning is a blend of greenish gold and russet, organzied in patches over the fields and devices from long and careful storage. Liberty's cheek is virtually untouched by handling along with her sculptured neck. For the reverse the lettering and devices are all crisp and toned with matching hues to the obverse.

When the Mercury dime was first conceived, the usual difficulties of delayed initial production. Curiously the wide adoption of vending machines required very specific rims and letters away from these rims to properly work in these vending machines. The initial prototype Mercury dimes required minor revisions. Thus the initial pattern Mercury dimes would not have been suitable to these vending marchines, so slight alterations were required to the master hubs before working dies could be made. This gave Denver a late start in 1916, and after 264,000 Denver dimes were struck, the Denver Mint was told to focus on the production of quarters instead. This continued until the end of the year and key date, low mintage issue of the Mercury dime series was born. Today these are sought out in all grades and have remained in strong demand for generations. To find a mint state coin requires considerable wealth and effort, with gems like this all but unheard of available only when major collections are sold. So, if you have been seeking one of these prized rarities in MS-66 FB, then look no furtherr than this lot. Well struck and nicely toned. Popular key date. Pop 20; 14 finer, 4 in 66+ FB, 10 in 67 FB. 1916-D. PCGS graded AU-58. A hint of light tone. The bands look almost full as the strike was sharp, and the highest devices just have a hint of wear. A perfect collector coin and one of the nicest of teh 264,000 pieces struck. The Denver Mint assumed it would return to striking dimes in late 1916, but they never had that chance, so after an initial flury of coins produced, no more 1916-D dimes were struck in the waning months of 1916, thereby creating the key date to the series. Examples like this are few and far between, so don't miss out if you want a really spectacular example. Popular key date (PCGS # 4906) Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000
