Lot 600
1867. Rays. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Key date. Fully brilliant white nickel surfaces and untoned. The strike is needle sharp and bold, with no softness, furthermore the surfaces are excelllent and keep this coin solidly in the gem category. Add to this the fact that something in the range of 60 proofs survive, of which perhaps only 25 pieces exhibit the Cameo contrast as seen here. The Rays reverse only lasted a few months into 1867, as the Mint found that on 1866 and early 1867 coinage the dies broke and cracked very early in thelr striking production, leaving the Mint scrambling to make new dies constantly because the design was just a bit too busy for this hard nickel-copper alloy. In time simplified designs without rays, stretched die life out long enough to make sense. Pop 7; 4 finer, 2 in 66 Cameo, 2 in 66 Star Cameo. Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
*This coin contains the COIN WORLD PLUS sticker.

1877. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo. Well struck for this proof only year where no nickels were struck for general circulation. The surfaces are spectacular with glittering reflectivity, no signs of spots or fading, and just a pale golden irridescence in areas to note the passage of time. This stunning coin offers not only fantastic surface quality, but is one of the finest seen and shows the most desirable deep cameo contrast. Only 510 examples issued in proof. Pop 3; only 1 example graded finer in 66+ for Deep Cameo at PCGS. (PCGS # 93831) Estimated Value $7,500 - UP

1918-D, 8 over 7. NGC graded EF-45. Evenly toned with light to medium gray with a dash of golden accents and rose highlights. This overdate was created when the master hub was usued to create a new die for 1917, then someone replaced the partially finished die with the 1918 master hub, and a wonderful overdate was born. The 7 is clear on this high grade coin beneath the 8, and the bison offers a full horn on his head too. A classic collector coin and a downright rare issue in all grades. Not many of these survived, and the overdate issue was discovered early on so the numbers struck and entering circulation was quite small. Popular key date Buffalo Nickel. Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500

1920-S. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC. Lovely rainbow toning with irridescent rose, lime, yellow and blue in rings surrounding the obverse and also n the reverse but to less of a degree. Incredible eye appeal as such, and of course the surfaces are mint fresh and gem quality. This is one of the finer examples of this date to survive and a highly appealing gem for its toning and strike as well. Pop 30; 5 finer, 5 in 65+, 1 in 66. 1923-S. NGC graded MS-66. Star. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides on this key date issue. The strike is fairly sharp for a San Francisco buffalo nickel of this era, and the surfaces are virtually pristine with no noticeable handling marks. A glorious top end example of this condition rarity, and one of the very finest to survive of this prized issue. The NGC star is only awarded to the most attractive coins for the grade, in this case for the glorious toning we assume, although the surfaces are amazing too! Pop 1; only 1 example graded higher in 66+ at NGC. Estimated Value $12,000 - UP

1927-D. NGC graded MS-66+. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides with pale yellow gold dominating. The surfaces are satin smooth and virtually untouched by other coins or handling, keeping its technical preservation high and the collector desires even higher. A condition rarity at this towering grade and worthy of an exceptional bid to capture this exceptional coin.

The strike is reasonably sharp on this elusive Denver issue, with a well defined braid and hair of the Chief, the reverse shows minor softenss on the periphery of the bison as so commonly seen, its actually unusual to find a really sharp exampe of this issue. A thin die crack slips across the bison's head diagonally. The horn is clearly defined along with the tail, but there's a softness in their presentation that confirms the die wear present. An opportunity for the advancd specialist to secure what is undoubtedly one of the absolute finest of this important Denver coin. Pop 1; tied with 2 PCGS MS-66+ for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $30,000 - UP

Lot 625
1937-D. 3 legs. PCGS graded MS-65. PQ. Nicely toned on both sides with a dash of golden yellow mixed with bright luster and a touch of pale nickel blue. This is one of the most popular key issues from the Buffalo nickel series, with the obviously missing foreleg on the bison. While plentiful enough in lower circulated grades for most collectors to afford one, in mint state the rarity increases with each grade point. In gem as we have here, this is a classic condition rarity with strong demand at all times.

As we have learned, the reverse die developed clash marks from the obverse, when a young mint employee was told to file these clash lines off, he went a bit too hard and removed the foreleg of the bison as well. Naturally this type of blunder delights collectors and the curious 3 legged-buffalo was born. Highly collectible and always a key issue with limited numbers found in mint state. Pop 48; 31 finer, 14 in 65+, 12 in 66, 5 in 66+. (PCGS # 3982) Estimated Value $19,000 - 20,000
