Small Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 200
1856. PCGS graded Proof 65. Boldly struck with even natural reddish-brown tone, lighter on the devices and a shade darker in the fields. The breast feathers on the eagle are full and sharp, along with the fine separation on the tailfeathers and wings too. A most handsome gem example of this coveted rarity.

After many years in circulation the prior design of the Large cents had grown unpopular with the public. These much larger sized cents were becoming cumbersome and filled pockets quickly with just a few coins. When these new much smaller Flying Eagle cents were tried out they were immediately quite popular for their smaller size and convenience. In 1857 after these 1856 Flying Eagles trial pieces were snapped up, the Philadelphia Mint had a grand release day to the public where old large cents could be exchanged for these new Flying Eagle cents, and the public went wild. Long lines formed where people could exchange old cents for new cents, and soon these Flying Eagle cents were seen everywhere in circulation. This 1856 is the first small beginning of this revised smaller size for the cent, and it became the standard that is basically still in use today. Always in great demand. Only 1,500 struck. Pop 58; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
