Lot 1334
(1837-42) Christopher Bechtler, ONE DOLLAR CAROLINA, 28 gr., N reversed. NGC graded MS-63. Untoned with prooflike fields that show no distracting nicks or marks. Fully lustrous and well struck. The backwards N in ONE is quite understandible, given the engraver has to engrave all the deivces in mirror image for the dies to produce the lettering going the right way. in this case there was a minor blunder, much to the delight of collectors today. This is one of the nicest examples to survive. Pop 3; only 2 examples graded finer in 64. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

Lot 1335
1852 Wass, Molitor & Co. (San Francisco) $10 Gold. Large head. NGC graded AU-58. A hint of light gold tone on the obverse, with bright and flashy surfaces throughout. This is a rare Territorial gold issue with limited numbers of survivors today, as most of these were melted down by the soon to be opened San Francisco branch mint, which came online in 1854, and standardized coinage in the region with some effort. These designs were employed to mimic the existing $10 gold coins in circulation at the time, which were produced in 1852 in either Philadelphia or New Orleans, far from the mines of San Francisco, hence the number of private minters that sprang up during the early years of the Gold Rush. Pop 4; 6 finer, 1 in 60, 3 in 61, 2 in 63. Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000
