Glossy olive brown and steel with mellowed mint red covering about 10% of the obverse; traces of faded mint red are visible on the reverse which is a lighter shade of brown. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the portrait. The only marks are two small digs at the second A in AMERICA. M-LDS, die state c, with die cracks on the reverse and a narrow rim cud break from star 3 nearly up to star 4. Our grade is AU58+, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. 1846 N-2 R2 Repunched 1 EF40. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned frosty light to medium olive brown and steel with hints of very faded red in protected areas. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No notable marks. Very rare M-LDS, die state e, with small but well-defined rim cud breaks at ES and AM. CC#4 among only 6 confirmed examples of the die state in the Grellman census, and the clarity of the cuds is a plus. Comes with a nice provenance. Estimated Value $225 - UP

Frosty medium brown and light olive with a few small peeps of faded mint red in protected areas. Late die state (d) with a clearly defined rim cud break from star 10 to star 11. 1846 N-25 R5 Tall Date with Repunched 1 F15. Glossy dark chocolate brown with light chocolate toning covering the devices. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are tiny contact marks scattered over both sides, none notable. A good identifying mark is a thin vertical nick in the field just left of the forelock. MDS, die state b. Crumbling connects three dentils under the end of the wreath stem. The line through the center of the upright of the 1 is clear. A rare variety that is extremely difficult to find in high grade. This piece is tied for CC#6 honors in the Grellman census. Estimated Value $200 - UP

1847 N-22 R3+ NGC graded MS67 Brown. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with at least 5% of the slightly faded mint red remaining on each side. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only defects are a pair of fine but fresh pin scratches from the truncation to the 47 in the date, traces of an old fingerprint around star 11, and a pinprick at the left foot of the first A in AMERICA. MDS, die state c. There is a strong die crack from the dentils to the left foot of the 1 in the date but the fine crack from the dentils under star 1 does not reach the neck. Our grade is MS65 net MS63+ for the tiny scratches, CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the NGC label. NGC population 2; tied for finest graded of the date or variety at both services. Estimated Value $3,500 - UP

1847 N-23 R5 VF35. Slightly sharper but there are a few more small nicks on the obverse than you like to see at this sharpness level. Most of the ticks are on the cheek and a couple are in the field under star 5. Otherwise this cent is quite nice and the toning is a very attractive light chocolate brown. Underlying mint frost covers the fields and protected areas, particularly on the reverse. M-LDS, die state d late, with strong die cracks on the reverse but no cud breaks. However there is a clearly sunken retained cud break on the rim over AM. A neat die state, one of the finest known with the sunken retained cud break in the Grellman census. And this cent comes with a nice provenance. Estimated Value $200 - UP

1848 N-44 R5+ G6. Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate. No defects, just some removable dirt. Extremely rare LDS, die state c late, with a strong die crack through the top of ME in AMERICA to the dentils over the adjacent letters. The section of the die outside the crack clearly has shifted outward. The crack is considerably stronger than the crack on the slightly inferior example in the famous Daniel Holmes Collection (lot 328 in our 1/30/2011 sale). A neat die state, tied with one other piece for the latest seen among only four seen in the late die state, and perhaps a precursor for an (as yet) undiscovered cud break. Estimated Value $250 - UP

1851/81 N-3 R1 Overdate 51 over Inverted 18 AU50. Frosty tan and light steel brown with a few faint puffs of lighter reddish brown toning at the top of the obverse. Sharply struck and void of any notable contact marks showing only a touch of friction on the highpoints. EDS, die state a. Die lines cover the field around the date and the 51 over Inverted 18 feature is bold. A nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Estimated Value $200 - UP

1851 N-17 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light olive brown and steel with 15-20% of the mint red remaining. The only mark is a spot of raised corrosion between the bottoms of the 5 & 1; otherwise this piece is choice. LDS, die state c, with two narrow but clearly defined rim cud breaks at stars 1 & 2. Only a few have been seen that show both rim cuds so clearly. Our grade is MS60+, tied for CC#7 for the variety in the Grellman census. Estimated Value $300 - UP
