Lot 1215
1831. PCGS graded AU-50. Here is a rare and desirable type coin. The gold coins struck prior to early 1834 had become more valuable based on their gold content than their stated denomination. The premium for gold coins (over silver) grew to the point that it was profitable to melt these gold coins down for a profit. Thus the majority of the pre-1834 gold coins were melted, leaving few for collectors today. Only a few percentage points of their original mintage survived this era of melting for profit. In time Congress reduced the amount of gold required for each denomination in circulation, and a new standard was adapted, and gold coins of the new standard stayed in circulation after its adoption in June, 1834. Remarkably, after the change in the gold standard for coinage, the mints themselves assisted in melting down the older coins and returning the profit to the depositors, thus further reducing the numbers of these older quarter and half eagle gold coins. Today they are highly sought after and are found in quite limited numbers. Lightly toned. Only 4,520 struck, with 110 to 140 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 5; 56 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7671) Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000

Lot 1216
1839-C. NGC graded AU-58. This is a key date to the Classic Head gold series and one of the most sought after for the unusual obverse C Mintmark above the date for its branch mint of Charlotte, North Carolina. There was a regional gold mine in that area and hence a branch mint opened there in 1839. This one is an early striking from the dies which are often seen on later strikes with several heavy die cracks. Here the devices are all sharp and attractive, and the surfaces are free of all but minute marks. Always in demand for the first year of issue from this mint, and a rarity in all grades. Well struck and untoned. Only 18,140 struck. Pop 62; 18 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7699) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 1217
1850-C. NGC graded MS-61+. A rare and desirable example of this elusive date and mint. Only 9,148 pieces were struck, and from that perhaps 160 exist today in all grades (per CoinFacts) In mint state their estimates fall to about 7 pieces of which this is certainly one of the finer ones. Handome rich golden surfaces, with a touch of copper tints. The strike is better than average for this Charlotte Mint issue, with the curls well defined on Liberty and the eagles' feathers well struck for this date. A condition rarity that will please most collectors. Frosty and untoned. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 62, 2 in 63. (PCGS # 7756) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1852-O. PCGS graded MS-61. CAC. PQ. Lovely quality on this scarce New Orleans quarter eagle. The surfaces are outstanding, with only a few minor signs of handling. Full mint luster and a solid strike define the devices well, and the eye appeal is high for the color and flash. A prime example of this condition rariety, not only to find one in mint state, but with CAC approval! Mostly untoned with reflective fields. Pop 11; 8 finer, 7 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 7766) Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400
