Lot 1199
1852-O. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned with a hint of color over blazing mint luster. The strike is sharp for this issue, with nice separation on Liberty's hair curls and the leaf veins on the reverse. This is a scarce New Orleans Mint issue which is seldom found nice and quite challenging to find in near gem condition like this. Glowing mint surfaces that are free of all but the most minor signs of handling. Outstanding quality for this date and mint! Pop 8; 3 finer, 1 in 64+, 2 in 65. (PCGS # 7520) Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000

1855-C. NGC graded AU-58. Nice golden toning with glorious surfaces that show no disturbances from very brief circulation. The strike is bold on Liberty's headdress as well as her flowing curls below. Her cheek is clean too, with no marks to distract the eye. These early Charlotte gold coins are quite rare, and almost never found in high grades like this. Their mintages are low, and survivors are few and far between. Hence, when a near mint state example like this crosses our desk, it deserves a lot of attention! So don't miss out if you love elegant and rare high grade classic gold rarities. Very popular Type 2 "C" Mint Gold Dollar. Only 9,803 struck. Pop 37; 18 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7533) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1858-S. NGC graded MS-62. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides over lustrous fields. This is a scarce date in all grades with a mere 10,000 struck. This is one of the finer examples seen, with great eye appeal and clean surfaces. These early San Francisco gold coins are always in high demand, as the majority of those struck were the larger $20 gold coins. A prized condition rarity in this grade. Pop 3; 1 finer in 64. (PCGS # 7550) Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500

1870. PCGS graded MS-67. PQ. Wonderful even gold toning on both sides blends in with abundant mint fresh luster. The strike is bold, and the surfaces nearly perfect. Scarce as a date and issue, and this coin is one of the absolute finest seen for the 1870 gold dollars. A great looking coin. Only 6,300 struck. Pop 8; 3 finer, 1 in 67+, 2 in 68. Lot 1207
1870-S. NGC graded MS-65. Fully untoned with semi reflective fields and nicely frosted devices. This is a tough issue, with only 3,000 struck. Furthermore, branch mints were always quite busy striking these handsome coins from the Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans mints since the beginning of the series, San Francisco came along too in the 1850s. Then the Civil War broke out in 1861 and branch mint gold stopped being struck, even from distant San Francisco! Then, one lone issue appears for the Gold dollar, the 1870-S as an outlier as no other branch mint gold dollars were struck through the end of the denomination in 1889. That's one reason this date and mint is so popular with collectors, plus its downright rare in any grade. This particular gem is one of the two finest seen! So don't miss it if you have been searching for a really special coin to represent this splendid San Francisco date. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at NGC. (PCGS # 7570) Estimated Value $16,000 - UP

1876. PCGS graded MS-67. Well struck and fully bright. Nice prooflike fields on both sides which offset the frosted devices. So few were struck that the dies never lost their original polish. It is curious that so few were made this year for this denomination, as it was the Centennial year of the United States and there were celebrations far and wide in this country. This is a glittering superb gem with unending eye appeal and glorious quality for the numismatist to long enjoy. Tied with just a couple of others as the finest seen of this date! Only 3,200 struck. Pop 3; tied for the highest graded examples at both services. (PCGS # 7577) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

Lot 1210
1876. PCGS graded MS-66. Rich golden toning on both sides with sparkling mint surface in the fields and a sharp strike on the devices. This is the centennial year issue of our country but was struck in very limited numbers. Reflective fields on both sides. Some light reverse lines in the planchet as made were caused when the planchet was rolled out between two massive steel rollers, which in this case left a few minor lines that still appear in the date and down to the left. Only 3,200 struck, and this is one of the finer examples seen. Pop 5; 5 finer, 2 in 66+, 3 in 67. (PCGS # 7577) Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000

1880. NGC graded MS-68. Boldly struck with prooflike surfaces on both sides and essentially a perfect coin. No signs of handling and the semi reflective fields are perfectly intact. Furthermore the wonderfully frosted devices are glorious too, with a satin smooth cheek on Liberty and perfectly formed curls on her head. In short, this coin is virtually identical in condition to the moment it was struck, and has retained every enticing sparkle to record that event. Only 1,600 struck. Pop 23; 6 finer, 1 in 68 Prooflike, 4 in 68 Star, 1 in 69. (PCGS # 7581) Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

1885. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A magnificent gem Proof that offers not only outstanding surfaces, but also the desirable cameo contrast too. Thus the boldly mirrored fields are strongly reflective, while the devices are showered in frost from the dies, creating wonderful and eye catchng contrast. This is one of the finer examples to survive, with glittering flash and unending eye appeal. Well struck and brilliant. Only 1,105 struck. Pop 3; 6 finer for Proof Cameo, 5 in 66, 1 in 67. 1888. PCGS graded Proof 65+ Cameo. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck. A blazing gem proof coin that offers solid contrast between the mirror fields and frosted devices, creating immense eye appeal when found on a gem like coin. This is the penultimate year of production for the Gold dollar, ending of course in 1889, and these gorgeous proof coins capture so much glory and quality that were struck right up to the end of the series. Here is a glorious example with the lucky date 1888. Only 1,079 struck. Pop 2; 12 finer for Proof Cameo, 9 in 66, 1 in 67, 2 in 67+. (PCGS # 87638) Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000
