Lot 889
1795. 3 leaves beneath each wing. BB-27, B-5. Rarity-1. PCGS graded VF-25. Lightly toned with pleasing soft gold in the fields that is even and attractive while the devices are light silver. This creates a cameo effect that shows off the head of Liberty in a handsome fashion. Excellent surfaces too, with no rim or surface marks to detract from this lovely coin. A classic type example to represent the 3 leaves variety, and these Flowing Hair dollars were only struck in limited numbers in 1794 and most of 1795. A solid example in every way (PCGS # 6852) Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,600

1797. 9 stars left, 7 right, large letters. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. A frosty coin with light variegated gray and gold toning on both sides. The strike is typical for this issue, but the fields glow with mint luster and frost, and the devices show only a trace of wear on the uppermost portions. Incredible quality for this early Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar, which is seldom found as nice as EF in condition, this near Mint example is extraordinary in its preservation and lack of circulation. Virtually unobtainable finer for this variety. The obverse shows the total of 16 stars, representing the states in the union at that time, with nine stars left, and seven to the right. The reverse has the small, delicate eagle perched on a cloud cluster, surrounded by a laurel branch and palm branch forming an open wreath. These designs are most elegant and attractive when found so well preserved. Only 7,776 struck. Pop 7; 4 finer, 1 in 58+, 1 in 61, 1 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 6863) Estimated Value $24,000 - UP

Close examination of the surfaces finds nothing to fault, and the fields and devices display wonderfully original toning and smooth light wear on the high points. A pleasing Draped Bust dollar. Pop 3; 9 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40022) Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300

1799 BB-166, B-9. Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-61. Dusky golden gray toning with some deeper patches of color on Liberty's cheek and hair, as well as across the eagle from long paper envelope storage most likely. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are clean and pleasing to the eye. Precious few of these ever popular Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle dollars exist in mint condition today, and this one offers mint fresh surfaces and a nice "look" of aged silver. Nicely toned on both sides. Some luster visible. Pop 20; 67 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000

1799. Irregular Date, 13 Stars on Reverse. B-15, BB-152, Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-45. CAC. Nicely toned with natural olive gray and gold with a few deeper traces intermixed. This particular variety was struck with a reverse die that was also used to strike coins in 1798, the only such occurance in 1799. Light wear and pleasing quality. Pop 4; 7 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40045) Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300

1799/8. 15 Stars on Reverse. B-3, BB-141, Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-40. Lightly toned on both sides with tawny gold shades which deepen at the periphery. This is a delightful variety as it offers two really fun features, first is the the overdate with the final 9 in the date over a previous 8, the second features is on the reverse where 15 stars were initially placed over the eagle, but the top row of stars shows where two of these stars were covered over with extended clouds, but a few points from the stars still peak out. Thus the engraver blundered by punching in too many stars, and covered over two of them for the most part with enlarged clouds! Precious few examples of this kind of die blunder and partial recovery are known. Pop 3; 19 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40064) Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300

1799/8. 13 Stars on Reverse. B-1, BB-142, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-63. This is an amazing example of the ever popular Draped Bust dollar, amazing for the choice mint state grade! Although a considerable number of these were coined from 1794 through 1803, only a modest number now exist. Of course the vast majority are in well circulated grades and finding a nice EF or AU coin can be a challenge for most collectors. So when this stunning Mint State 63 appears at auction, it is truly something quite special. The obverse is a classic frosty white with ample luster to please the eye and just a few traces of toning while the reverse shows deeper russet around the rims with the centers and fields bright and flashy.

The obverse is quite interesting as it shows one of the popular overdates, with the final 9 being punched over an existing 8, both are clear with a loupe. The reverse shows a few die cracks at the top, crossing along STATES and into the clouds below. A heavier die failure is noted at the I of AMERICA, and this area shows signficant die sinking, likely from defective die steel that literally sunk down in this location as more coins were struck. Nearly all the surviving coins from this die show this feature. This piece is undoubtedly one of the finest for the variety and for this popular and highly collectible overdate. Pop 1; 1 finer in 64 for the variety at NGC. Estimated Value $30,000 - UP

1800. B-13, BB-193, Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-40. CAC. Pleasing light golden gray toning on both sides, with trouble free surfaces and no distracting nicks or cuts. This is the usual die state with heavy die clashing on the reverse from Liberty's drapery lines which make a few of the stars look like they have long tails. Pop 3; 6 finer at PCGS for the variety. Lot 898
1844. NGC graded MS-63. This is a key date with a tiny mintage of just 20,000 pieces. All known coins struck for circulation used a single obverse die which is actually a doubled die error--so the vertical shield lines are four in number instead of the expected three lines. Furthermore, there is a misplaced top of the 8 from the date in the skirt lines right of the shield point and above the 84. The strike is sharp for this prized issue, with strong definition on the star radial lines as well as the skirt lines. Matching with sharpness on the reverse, where the eagle's feathers are crisp and clear. Close examination finds scattered light handling marks present as expected for the grade, but the eye appeal is strong for this issue and grade. The reverse has another feature worthy of note, fine die lines are present in the field just below and above the eagle's wings, and these are seen on all surviving examples of this elusive issue. Likely one of the top half dozen or so of the business strikes that are known today, making this a fine offering for the connoisseur. Well struck and nicely toned with a pleasing, even gray patina from long and careful storage. Pop 2; 1 finer in 64. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP

1857. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC. PQ. Lovely shades of blue and lavender toning span both the obverse and reverse. The mirror surfaces are amazing, with no signs of handling that often mar these large, heavy coins, especially in proof condition. Not so here, this gem is stunning in every regard. Fully struck and downright rare with a mintage of 50 pieces of which perhaps 40 exist today. This is one of the very finest examples and well within the top 10 for the date known today. Add to this the coveted CAC approval and you have an amazing offering. An exceptional example of this prized rarity in gem condition. Pop 3; 3 finer, 1 in 65 Cameo, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66. 1859. NGC graded Proof 66+. Lovely gold, russet and blue toning on both sides--with deeper shades of blue around the rims which frame the gorgeous near perfect surfaces. Boldly struck with no signs of weakness to be found. A pristine and magnificent gem, not only in terms of toning but also technically for it to earn this stupendous grade. This is certainly one of the finest of the modest proof mintage of only 800 pieces issued. If you have been searching for an incredible eye popping example for you type or date collection, look no further than this incredible offering. Pop 1; 5 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $17,500 - UP

1859-S. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice even gold and russet toning on both sides. Frosty, particularly on the reverse of this low mintage issue. A scarce coin and seldom seen this choice. Only 20,000 struck, and precious few are known in mint state today, this one certainly near the top of those known. This is the first and only issue of silver dollars by the San Francisco Mint of the No Motto style. In fact, the Seated design was scarcely struck at all in San Francisco, with just a handful coined in 1870, a few thousand more in 1872. Although a modest number of silver dollars were struck there in 1873, these were apparently melted as none are known today. Hence finding a Liberty Seated Dollar from San Francisco really comes down to those dated 1859 and 1872, both challenging issues--behind the virtually unobtainable 1870-S. An historic and always popular issue with collectors as such. Pop 9; 9 finer, 7 in 63, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64+. (PCGS # 6948) Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500

1863. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. Wonderful blue-green toning on both sides which is both rich and original. This rare No Motto Proof was struck during the depths of the Civil War, and somehow survived in exceptional condition. When examining this gem, be sure to note how frosty the devices are, bold and undisturbed by the decades of time, as well as the near perfect reflectivity of the glassy fields. If you demand stunning quality and strong visual appeal, look no further than this incredible offering. Well struck. Only 460 struck. Pop 9; 5 finer, 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 in 66+, 1 in 66+ Cameo, 1 in 67+ Cameo. (PCGS # 7006) Estimated Value $18,000 - 20,000

1867. PCGS graded Proof 65. Wonderful pale blue toning on both sides with flashes of golden irridescence intermixed. The strike is bold on every tiny device right up to the largest dress fold. Outstanding surface quality too, with no handling issues or detracting nicks. This is the second year of the Motto design, which was used from 1866 through 1873 when this series came to an end. Glorious quality and struck soon after the Civil War came to an end, during a time when few people could save such a coin like this, hence the demand was low, and survivors in gem grades are downright rare! A nice looking gem proof. Boldly struck. Only 625 pieces issued. Pop 17; 12 finer, 1 in regular proof, 8 in Proof Cameo, 3 in Deep Cameo. (PCGS # 7015) Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

1871. NGC graded Proof 66. Lovely golden toning on both sides, with glorious shades of blue and teal around the rims, lighter silver fields and center on the obverse, the reverse with richer toning of royal blue at the rims, glorious orange russet in the fields and matching antique hues over the mirror and frosted surfaces. Despite a decent number struck (for the time), this remains a sought-after issue with the Motto above the eagle, and in such stellar preservation represents a true rarity at this lofty grade level. The visual appeal is simply extraordinary for this issue. Boldly struck. Only 960 struck. Pop 10; 10 finer, 2 in regular proof, 3 in Cameo, 5 in Ultra Cameo. Estimated Value $12,000 - UP

The devices are fully struck and show all the finer nuances of the design, right up the stars highest point. The fields and devices are free of any distracting marks nicks, with the gorgeous antique toning accentuating the design elements. While not all that many were struck in proof for the year, this one stands tall as one of the finest survivors both technically and visually. Only 960 struck. 1872. PCGS graded MS-65. A hint of light even toning over highly lustrous surfaces. The strike is amazing and the fields are prooflike as the dies were fresh and fairly new when this one was struck. The surfaces are satin smooth and wonderfully preserved, especially for a Liberty Seated silver dollar. These are rarely encountered in gem grades, and this one is quite solid and impressive in every way. Toned with just a touch of light golden irridescence at the rims, the centers classic light silver and bright. there appears to be a minor bit of date repunching above the 2 near the base of Liberty. A wonderful coin which will please any specialist who demands high quality. Pop 3; only 1 example graded higher in 66+ at PCGS. (PCGS # 6968) Estimated Value $35,000 - UP

1872-CC. NGC graded MS-63. Nicely toned on the obverse with delicate hues of silver-gray to the centers and framed with deeper medium gray to the rim. The reverse is well matched and attractive too, with flashes of mirroring in the fields yet free of any detracting marks. Needless to say, this is an incredible rarity in any grade, even in well circulated grades! Only 3,150 pieces were struck for the entire year, and finding any decent coin to represent this key issue has always been a major challenge for collectors. Back in the heady days of the 1870s around the Carson City Mint, it was definitely the wild west there, with hard work, hard living and not much care for the moment. Hence coins like this were banged about, spent and circulated hard, ridden on horses into the distant valleys. Only a few survived in high grades like the present piece. Here is one that has earned the incredible Choice Mint State status from NGC. Notice the full mint frost on the devices and incredible traces of reflectivity in the fields. Although a good many of the original tiny mintage do survive, only a few retain mint state status. Reflective fields on both sides. Pop 2; 4 finer, 2 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. 1872-CC. PCGS graded AU-53. Mostly untoned with silver gray dominating the surfaces, the periphery has delicate golden russet accents. A strong loup finds little record from brief circulation, with no deep or distracting marks, and traces of residual luster here and there. The original mintage of 3,150 pieces was reduced by time and attrition to where approximately 400 exist today from this modest issue. Perhaps 20 or so are mint state, the others from this select surviving group are circulated. Most show far more wear and circulation evidence than seen on this piece, and for collectors to even obtain an example requires patience. The 1872-CC remains one of the most challenging issues from this series. Reflective fields enhance the already high eye appeal. A scarce "CC" Mint dollar. Pop 7; 41 finer at PCGS. 1873-CC. NGC graded AU-58. Totally a white coin with some luster visible on both sides. The strike is sharp for this elusive date and mint. Notice how smooth and attractive the fields and devices are, with just a touch of wear on the high points of the design. A key date of the Liberty Seated dollar series, and the rarest "CC" Mint dollar in terms of survivors. Only 2,300 struck, and it is estimated that around 200 exist today. Furthermore from that meager issue, many were apparently melted and never released into circulation, limiting the numbers around today considerably. Finding one this close to mint state is a true challenge, and capturing this coin will certainly put any advanced collection high on the radar of other specialists. A memorable offering. 1873. PCGS graded MS-65. Here is a fantastic offering for the type or date collector who demands glorious quality and eye appeal. At a glance the numismatist is presented with a regal, original coin that displays classical soft pewter gray and silver toning, with slightly deeper russet gold surrounding the design elements and accenting them. The toning is perfectly matched on the reverse. Luster peaks through as well, and the surfaces are solidly in the gem class. 1873 is the first year of issue of this new concept coin of a Trade dollar, intended to circulate through the Orient, but many stayed here on these shores to form the great coin collections of today. Here is one such coin, with no signs of handling to distract, but well earned classical patina from decades of proper storage. Well struck and lightly toned. Pop 13; 7 finer, 1 in 65+, 5 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7031) Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

1873-CC. PCGS graded MS-63+. A nice snow white example that displays abundant luster, a typical strike with some central softness, but excellent surfaces that are clean on the obverse. Some minor reverse marks otherwise MS-64. A tough issue when found in any grade of Mint condition, and this one is quite lovely and solidly in the choice category. Rarely seen this nice and a coin that should not be overlooked by serious collectors. This is also the first year of issue of the Trade dollar, and many of these struck at the Carson City and San Francisco Mints were exported as intended to China for trade in the Orient. Here is one that not only survived, but suvived in fantastic condition. Pop 1; 9 finer, 8 in 64, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 7032) Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000
