Lot 780
1797. Overton-101a. Rarity-5. 15 Stars. NGC graded AU-55. This is a very attractive silver gray and steel blue toned coin with the classic look of "old silver". The stike is exceendingly sharp, including Liberty's lovelock before her ear, a feature that wears away quickly after limited circulation. Thus this is a testament to the high grade of the present offering. Furthermore, Liberty's drapery shows full separation right onto Liberty's shoulder. On even the highest grade specimens of this type, this feature rarely shows, but here this feature is sharp and well defined. Also the eagle's eye is clear when studied. Nicely toned on both sides and an important silver type coin which is rarely found in grades even approaching this. Only 3,918 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $100,000 - UP
1797 is the key date Bust half dollar and the rarest half dollar in Type in the entire United States series. The design of the Draped Bust obverse with the Small Eagle reverse was used only in 1796-97 when the Heraldic Eagle reverse was adopted (in early 1798 on dimes, but half dollars weren't struck again until 1801, thus no half dollars were struck from 1798 through 1800). The minuscule mintage tells the story once more since the total struck was recorded as 2,984 pieces for the year. Precious few are known today, particularly in high grades.

Extensive die cracks are noted on the upper reverse, common to this variety. In addition there is a small die crack through the O in OF a new crack develops from the edge between DS and across the left wing. Another crack develops from the edge down through the first T in STATES to the eagle's head and in its final states (as seen here) becomes a mass of die cracks. Quite interesting and educational to the student of die progression. Amato coin serial #410.

1806. Overton-118. Rarity-4. NGC graded MS-64. Point 6 and Stems. A gorgeous coin with lovely blue and golden toning over lustrous fields. The strike is fairly sharp on all the devices and the surfaces are free of any detracting handling marks. The reverse die has the usual encircling die cracks in the legend, but they are not too heavy yet. An important type coin and one which is quite scarce this well preserved, and nearly impossible to find appreciably finer in quality. The eye appeal here is quite high, not only for the colorful toning, but the surfaces as well. Pop 14; 7 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $18,000 - UP

Nicely toned with attractive deep russet and gold patina, particularly on the obverse while the reverse has more flashy silver surfaces showing with toning around the rims and lighter to the centers. The fields are alive and frosty. A lovely coin that offers both a solid stirke and super clean surfaces. 1807. Overton-102. Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-63. Nice old time toning of classic antique gold spanning the obverse and reverse. Smooth and attractive surfaces, with little evidence of handling over the two centuries. A scarce coin in mint state, and this choice example will certainly find many suitors. 1814 Overton-109, R-2. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely blue, lilac and golden toning over lustrous surfaces. The strike is sharp despite the oft seen challenges for 1814 half dollars--those are abundant clash marks! The ghostly images of the opposing die are clearly set in die steel on this example, with the eagle's wing extending through the left obverse field, the scroll above the date. For the reverse Liberty's upper cap is seen from the stem tip to the arrowheads. Fantastic quality and eye appeal with the radiant and colorful blue, gold and lilac shades on both sides, well struck too, and carefully preserved since the day it was struck. The strike is sharp on the stars and all of Liberty's curls, matching on the reverse the eagle has full definition on his feathers. What really sets this coin apart, is the amazing quality of the surfaces, they are virtually untouched by others as evidenced in the amazing quality and eye appeal that is retained here. The eye appeal and quality here are matched by the originality of this majestic coin. Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services for the variety. Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

1827. Square base 2. Overton-120a, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-67. Frosty and well struck, with every device brought fully up by the dies and the stars show strong radial lines on most of them on the left, soft centers on the uppermost and right side stars as usually seen for this die variety. There are strong die lines below Liberty's bust, always seen on this issue. What is most incredible is the exceptional quality of the fields and devices. Close scrutiny with a strong loupe scarcely finds any sign of contact. Not only is this the finest example of this die variety known, but it is likely one of the very finest for this year as well in terms of technical grade quality. This coin was held in the phenomenal Phil Kaufman Collection, sold 22 years ago. This coin is simply magnificent! Pop 1; the finest example graded at both services for the variety. 1836. Reeded edge. GR-1, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-63. Boldly struck especially on the curls of Liberty and the eagle's feathers, although there is minor softness on the central star radials as commonly seen. The obverse and reverse are nicely toned with a blend of golden gray and antique hues. While the original mintage has long been reported as 1,200 pieces, this has been found to be too low considering that approximately 1,000 of these exist today (estimates by CoinFacts). Thus the original mintage was more likely in the 5,000 pieces or so for the year. Remember that these were the long awaited, and finally produced first coinage struck by the new steam driven coining press at the Philadelphia Mint. This leap forward in technology allowed for more rapid coin production and more consistent strikes. Two changes were made to the reverse design, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was dropped (matching that policy on current quarter dollars and gold coins), and 50 C was changed to spell out 50 CENTS. Another significant change was the elimination of the wording on the edge, which ws replaced with reeding that could be imparted by the collar used on the new steam press. Any such lettering on the edge would have been difficult to impart with the ejection mechanizm used to remove the struck coin and insert the new blank into the press. This has always been a sought-after issue for the initial steam coinage tie, and marks the beginning of our mints into the more advanced machine age. Pop 5; 6 finer, 3 in 64, 1 in 64 Star, 2 in 65. In fact this is a true condition rarity in any grade even approaching this level. Out of the original mintage of 129,500 pieces, only 500 or so exist today. This is clearly one of the finest as this date is very challenging to find in any high grade, and mint state pieces are downright rare and rarely offered. 1901-O. NGC graded MS-66. Collectors have known for many years that the 1901-O half dollar is a tough issue to find in choice or gem grades. Here is one of the nicest to cross our path in a long while, and memorable for its quality. The obverse offers a sharp strike with all the devices boldly defined. A loupe will notice a few trace roller lines as commonly seen on these half dollars, crossing Liberty's face at a modest angle. Most of the branch mints of this era, New Oreans and San Francisco, seemed to keep the striking pressure dialed down bit to coin these half dollars, as so many of the coins known today have just a bit of softness in the strike, usually located on the right claw of the eagle, and the upper right junction of the wing and breast and sometimes the shield. An example of this is striking softness is found here, and for this date and mint, actually shows a sharper than average strike. This factor is important when considering that the present coin is tied with the finest certified by NGC of this date and mint. Nice prooflike fields add a tinge of sparkle to this glorious offering. 1913. PCGS graded MS-66. Well struck throughout, including all the areas that are often poorly struck up on the reverse. The obverse and reverse are deeply toned with flecks of russet gold and dappled areas over lustrous silver surfaces, clearly original but lacking the organizational qualities that sometimes occur from long storage. This is a low mintage date, with a scant 188,000 struck for circulation and precious few were saved. In fact, this coin is tied with a handful of others at the top grade numerically, with a few others just nudging it out with the "+" for the finest seen by PCGS. A key date in gem condition that should not be overlooked. Pop 6; 4 finer in 66+. (PCGS # 6527) Estimated Value $5,000 - UP
