Lot 708
1806. Browning-9. Rarity-1. NGC graded MS-63. Nicely toned with delicate antique golden hues over luster. This is one of the finer examples of this variety and its quite a handsome coin too. Furthermore this is a later die state with a bisecting die crack up through the 1 in the date to the top of the obverse, with another branching thin crack that arcs down across Liberty's shoulder and down to the rim through her breast. A tough type coin that is seldom found this nice. An important offering for the type or variety collector! Pop 9; 17 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP

1831. Small Letters. Browning 1, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-66. Boldly struck with lovely gold and russet toning on both sides. The strike is nearly perfect, with fully defined stars surrounding Liberty and fully rounded curls down her back. Matching the strength of strike on the reverse, the eagle is bold too. What really sets this coin apart is the amazing quality of the surfaces. Only one other coin of this date is graded this high by PCGS, there are none finer. Hence, this coin has claims to be the finest known example of this date. An important offering for the specialist. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded not only for the variety but also for the date at PCGS. (PCGS # 38980) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

1838. No Drapery. PCGS graded MS-64. Evenly toned with tawny gold throughout over lustrous fields. The strike is a tad soft on the obverse high points, but sharp enough elsewhere. First year of the new Gobrecht design on the quarter dollar denomination, and these are quite elegant and were well received. Rarely is this date found this nice, and seldom much finer. A lovely example. Pop 25; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5391) Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000

1847. NGC graded Proof 66. Nicely toned on both sides and this is a rare issue with only 10 pieces struck of which perhaps 8 survive today. Here is one of the nicest with glorious antique rose and blue toning with flashes of golden yellow intermixed. The surfaces are clean and attractive, and the strike is bold on the central devices, but a trifle weak on the stars on the right side only. This is a very rare and desirable early Proof coin, these were struck in very low numbers in most years, and survivors are few and far between. Needless to say, this is an excellent opportunity to buy a truly rare and exceptional coin. Pop 1; tied with a PCGS PR-66 specimen for the finest examples graded at both services. 1852-O. NGC graded MS-61. Totally white with semi reflective fields. Curiously several new dies for 1852 coinage were sent to New Orleans to make quarters, but most were not used by the end of the year and defaced. Recall that by 1852 the California Gold rush was starting to bring down the price of gold compared to silver, hence silver values rose to where it was profitable to melt silver coins like these quarters in 1852. Production dropped down quickly until 1853 when a reduced silver standard was adopted, and melting was no longer profitable on these later coins. Hence, the mintage of 1852 in New Orleans was low, and all rare today. A scarce coin in mint state. Only 96,000 struck. Pop 1; only 1 example graded finer in 63 at NGC. Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500

1853. Arrows and rays. PCGS graded MS-65. Toned on both sides with deep golden gray with flecks of yellow blended into the fields, the reverse is a bit lighter with flashy silver in the fields. This is a short lived type coin with the Arrows and Rays announcing the reduced silver standard that began in early 1853. Most of these entered circulation and stayed there for many years. Thus finding a mint state coin, or a gem like this, is quite an opportunity. Sharply impressed an a desirable example of this prized issue. Pop 19; 16 finer, 4 in 65+, 9 in 66, 3 in 67. 1863. NGC graded MS-66+. During the depths of the Civil War, this 1863 quarter was struck. Even casual examination will quickly discover that it is essentially "as struck" with near perfect surfaces, a bold strike and no signs of mishandling anywhere. The only evidence of time passing is a touch of light golden toning which accents the devices. Although a fair number of these exist in mint state, the present one is tied for the finest seen of the entire issue with just a couple of others. Important for the Civil War date, and carefully preserved for generations since. Highly collectible and a wonderful representative of the No Motto type. A frosty white gem. Boldly struck. 1896-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Popular key date with a low, low mintage of 188,039 pieces and this is one of the nicer ones to come down to us today. The obverse and reverse are both frosty and bright, with copious amounts of luster and generous eye appeal. This has long been known to be one of the "Big Three" rarities of the Barber quarter series, along with the 1901-S and 1913-S issues. Well struck and white in color with just a hint of tone. Close examination of the obverse finds very few signs of handling on this near gem quarter, matching the reverse too where no noteworthy marks are present.
