Lot 1
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-1 R2 NGC graded MS65. A Large Planchet variety with Pellets beside the trunk. Frosty light steel gray. Sharply struck a bit off center to the bottom affecting the top of only one letter in the legend. The only defect is a chip out of the rim at the bottom (as struck). Clear evidence of die clashing shows at MASA, as usual for this variety. The date and legends are bold (except for some weakness on MASA thanks to the die clashing). A premium example of this very popular early colonial issue. The attribution and weight (66.0 grains) are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 5; 4 finer: 2 in 65+, 2 in 67. Lot 2
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Threepence Noe-34 NGC graded MS63. Variety with Pellets beside the Tree. A beautiful example of this tough denomination, one of the sharpest seen. Frosty medium steel gray with lighter silvery gray on the highpoints and slightly darker bluish steel gray in protected areas. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned to the top, as usual on this variety, while the reverse is nicely centered on the planchet. The date and legends are quite bold except for the usual weakness at EN in ENGLAND due to earlier die clashing. No marks or planchet defects, essentially flawless. Superior to either of the examples in the Ford collection. A premium example of the type and variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Eliasberg provenance are noted on the NGC label. Weight 17.9 grains shown on the label as well. NGC population 2; tied for finest graded at both services. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP

1741 Admiral Vernon Medal Betts-324 R5 NGC graded XF40. One of the CARTAGENA series of medals. Nicely struck on a choice planchet showing just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. No notable marks or other defects. The surfaces are covered with a thin layer of natural oxidation and this looks like a piece that has rested untouched for a very long time. A proper brushing should bring out the underlying luster. The attribution and Eric P. Newman (EPNNES) provenance are noted on the NGC label. Estimated Value $100 - UP

Lot 4
1779 Rhode Island Ship Medal in Brass Betts-562 NGC graded MS61. Variety with VLUGTENDE removed and without a wreath below the ship. Sharply struck and perfectly centered on a smooth brass planchet. Frost shows through a thin layer of natural oxidation in the fields and the only defects are a some trivial stains, mostly hidden in the rigging on the large ship and at ME in AMERICA. The obverse (large ship side) is dark olive and steel while the reverse is slightly lighter with golden brass in some of the protected areas. A very nice example of this popular colonial issue that is listed in the "Colonial Issues" section of the "Redbook." The origins of this medal are uncertain but current research suggests they were struck circa 1780 and refer to two significant events in the US fight for independence. One side represents the Continental Army's withdrawal from Aquidneck Island in 1778 while surrounded by the British fleet commanded by Admiral Lord Richard Howe and the other side refers to the later withdrawal of Lord Howe's fleet from Narragansett Bay in 1779. While the place of manufacture and intended messages are uncertain, there is no doubt the piece depicts two very significant events in a conflict that changed the world. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 5
1783 John Chalmers Annapolis Shilling with Short Worm Breen-1011 PCGS graded XF45. Attractive glossy medium steel gray. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a tiny pinprick midway between the feet of the two birds and a microscopic planchet lamination near the dentils at AP in ANNAPOLIS (as struck). Nicely struck slightly off center to K-4.5. The date and legends are all strong (these shillings often come with weakly struck areas). A very nice example of this historic early American coinage. These were struck by John Chalmers, a silversmith in Annapolis, Maryland, to help alleviate the shortage of acceptable silver coins in the area. The "short worm" version is slightly more common than the "long worm" type, but both are quite rare. PCGS population 9; 7 finer: 3 in 50, 2 in 53, 2 in 55. PCGS #596. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP
