Jackson, Andrew, ALS Dated 1830 Written As President to Secretary of the Treasury, Samuel D. Ingham Regarding a Misconduct Inquiry (1767-1848) The 7th President of the United States has written on stationery, 7¾ x 5", recto and verso to his Secretary of the Treasury dated March 12, 1830, regarding assistance in a misconduct charge of an individual in Western Pennsylvania that "was placed in my hands." Evidently Ingham was furnished with a written defense by the mother and Jackson is requesting the information as to how to proceed. Jackson closes his request, "I am respectfully yours, Andrew Jackson"

Both Jackson and Ingham found themselves drawn into one of the biggest political sex scandals of the 19th Century gaining steam at the time this letter was sent. This involved members of President Andrew Jackson's Cabinet and fueled mostly by their wives (especially by Vice President John Calhoun's wife, Floride) known as The Petticoat Affair. Scandalous rumors of adulterous affairs and claims of prostitution were levied at Secretary of War, John Eaton and his wife; charges Jackson did not support. The scandal got so out of control with cabinet members, taking sides that Eaton challenged Ingham to a duel for not supporting him which he declined to accept. Nevertheless, Eaton then organized a posse to (likely) kill Ingham who had to quickly escape to Baltimore when it became clear Jackson was not going to intervene. Ingham did not return to his Treasury position.

Letter is in fine condition, quite legible and still retains the faint blind embossing in upper left corner of a dove holding a tiny branch inside a circle. There are discrete efforts of conservation and repair including a decades old strip of paper tape on verso to hold in check any splitting along the majory fold line. Tape in no way intrudes on any of Jackson's writing. On facing page a one inch strip of clear tape to hold in check the same fold line that also does not impact any of the text. There is a round stain from the adhesive of a circular sticker on verso, long removed, that caused discoloration through the date, 1830, on facing page. Otherwise a fine manuscript for any level of collector. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP

Two 19th Century military appointments by the 16th and 17th Presidents of the United States. 1. Abraham Lincoln (1808-1865). Partially printed document signed as President on vellum 19½ x 15½. Appointing Peter H. Niles to First Lieutenant in the Signal Corp, with the appointment signed and dated July 15, 1864. Appointment is hand signed by President Lincoln and Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. Note: This appointment boasts one of the cleanest, near pristine full signatures of the President we have seen in some time, in spite of an ages old soft fold to the document running through it. A wonderful acquisition for any level of collector or institution. In excellent condition.

The Andrew Johnson appointment would normally not be running with the Abraham Lincoln. However to split these two would be a shame in that the Johnson appointment dated April 20, 1866 is for the same individual, Peter H. Niles now being appointed to Captain by Brevet. However the signature by Andrew Johnson is a steel engraving, but Edwin Stanton's is authentic.

The two appointments are matted and framed modestly to 28 x 42" under plexi-glass and can be removed and shipped without if preferred.

There are a great number of sites that are available regarding information on Captain Peter H. Niles including some cataloging his reports. He mustered out in 1869. Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000

US Presidents: James Madison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Ulysses S. Grant. Four Signed Pieces. Collection of four signed pieces by US Presidents. 1.) James Madison signed land grant 9¾ x 15" dated November 17, 1812. Land grant itself is in fine condition with no tears or repairs. Madison's signature is present, legible, intact with no stains. However it is light compounded by his lettering on the thin side so best viewed at close range. 2.) Some detective work has revealed that Zachary Taylor has penned in bold ink, the address on a flattened cover (8 x 8½") the address of an R.G. Wood of the US Army located at Fort Texas ca. 1846. The ink blob is a self-correction by Taylor who actually ordered the construction of Fort Texas, later renamed Fort Brown, in honor of Major Jacob Brown killed there at very beginning of the Mexican American War. 3.) John Tyler as President penned a cover to Edward Everett, US Envoy, London adding Dr. Joynes in lower left corner. On flap "President Tyler" is executed in a different hand. 4½ x 5" facing cover is in superb condition with the verso having considerable residue from a previous mounting that in no way comprises the front. As Everett was appointed by President Harrison as Ambassador to the UK and remained almost through Tyler's Presidency, this cover would have been written between 1841-1845. 4.) Ulysses S. Grant signed pardon as President dated April 12, 1873. 11 x 8" with pardon in excellent condition. Unfortunately pardon was clearly framed and displayed causing Grant's signature to fade by 80%. It is visible only in close proximity. Estimated Value $600 - UP

Roosevelt, Franklin D and RMS Titanic TLS as Secretary of the Navy Referencing Life Jackets Aboard the Ship + Autographs by Survivors. TLS on Secretary of the Navy letterhead 2pp dated October 29th, 1914. Mr. Roosevelt is responding to a woman who has a patent for life-saving suits for war ships. He responds by explaining the Bureau of Construction and Repair of the Navy Department are charged with life-saving equipment. He continues by noting that "since the sinking of the "Titanic" some 250 life saving devices, boats, life-saving suits, preservers etc, have been submitted and none have been found to have sufficient merit to warrant adoption in lieu of the present practice"………."vessels of the Navy are at present furnished, in addition to the boat outfit with cork ring life-buoys, 18" and 30", for rescue work, and also with either Kapok or cork life preservers." Roosevelt is no doubt including the contents of the current life-preservers at time of writing because only 2½ years previous, the Titanic had wood blocks in canvas jacket preservers for flotation. That ultimately proved a disaster due to the hundreds of passengers who leapt into the water some at great height breaking their teeth and jaws on impact by the wood blocks meant to save their lives. Lot includes autographs by two survivors; Marjorie Robb who was 23 at the time of sinking surviving with her sister in Lifeboat 6, who signs with great difficulty two pieces (one on back of a photo) as she was blind at time of signing. There are six autographs by Edwina MacKenzie whos was quite young at time of sinking, the best on two of her cards printed " Titanic Survivor" and on two excellent postcards of the ship. Roosevelt, Theodore: Collection of Signed Pieces, TLS by T. Roosevelt and Signed Letters, Postcards and Covers by Wife and Children. The President Theodore Roosevelt Collection :

1.) (1858-1919) The 26th President of the United States had certainly distinguished himself earlier as a New York State Assemblyman and noted for his impressive efforts on the state level in the 1884 Presidential election which earned him a national reputation. In 1886 he ran for mayor of New York City, lost, then campaigned for Benjamin Harrison in the Midwest. In return, President Harrison appointed him to be President of the Civil Service Commission. He enforced the laws and trimmed the fat as can be seen in this TLS 10½ x 8½" executed on commission letterhead dated August 25, 1893. Roosevelt demands information from the Collector of Customs in San Francisco regarding nine employees, questioning their eligibility and reinstatement and pointing out a potential error. Signed "T. Roosevelt", both the signature and the document are in excellent condition. We are including a typed letter stamped as Governor of NY dated 1900 inviting assemblymen to dinner.
