Ture Bengtz. Summer Day. (1907-1903) Finnish immigrant who settled in Boston and in 1927 attended the prestigious School of Fine Arts was not only a fine painter, but also a technical illustrator for Raytheon during WWII, his illustrations proving so exact that they appeared to many to be photographs. Calder, Alexander. "CIRCUS". (1898 -1976) One of the most beloved and innovative American artists of the 20th Century, known the world over for his mobiles, monumental sculptures, his jewelry and his paintings. Alexander Calder was born into a family of artists - his grandfather having moved to Philadelphia from Scotland and became a world class sculptor and created the the colossal statue of William Penn atop the Philadelphia City Hall's tower. Calder's father following in his father's footsteps created many public installations and his mother a well regarded portrait artist. However both parents did not want Calder to become an artist so he enrolled to study mechanical engineering in college and became an engineer and draughtsman. But those talents eventually morphed into a desire to paint and create. He enrolled in art school and one of his first jobs was with the National Police Gazette to sketch performance from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus which began a life-long fascination.

In 1920-21 he created a mechanical circus/toys entitled "Cirque Calder" while abroad. The sculpture became something of an avant-garde hit in Paris. From there, Calder started to develop what became his kinetic sculptures and mobiles for which he is most known. In the 1950's he began creating his monumental sculptures as seen at JFK, in downtown Los Angeles, Paris, Montreal, Grand Rapids, and numerous other pieces beloved by the communities they tower over. As Calder's sculptures moved into the realm of pure abstraction in the early 1930s, so did his paintings, drawings and prints.

"Circus" (1976) gouache on paper (framed) represents one of the few works completed in the last year of his life. It is very much a theme most prevalent in both his 2-D and 3-D works. Here, Calder embraces the presence of light and music in the circus with the left corner a spotlight illuminating the rings of the circus. Conjointly, one could also see it as a booming drum over a keyboard reverberating the sounds that fill the circus performance space. Light, sound and movement proved life-long themes in all of Calder's works.

Calder's paintings and sculptures are in many permanent collections across the world. The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, has the largest body of his work. Other important museum collections include the The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.

Xavier Cugat. You Bet Your Ass. (1900-1990) Born near Barcelona, Spain, but moved as a child to Cuba by his parents to escape persecution, Cugat was a child prodigy on the violin by age 12 and performed with the Havana Symphony. At age 16 he toured with opera great Enrico Caruso, who was also a caricaturist; Cugat followed suit. Obviously Cugat became a world renowned orchestra leader, which included performers such as Desi Arnaz, Abbe Lane, Tito Rodriguez, Yma Sumac and Miguelito Valdés. His headlining before and after WWII at The Waldorf Astoria for over 16 years remains unequaled, but he never stopped developing his art and became collected for his caricatures of Hollywood stars and his colorful Latin-infused paintings. In his typical illustrative style, this large acrylic on board is entitled "You Bet Your Ass" and it is a joyous explosion of color and whimsy. In excellent condition 30 x 24" and is framed to 35 x 29. Cugat was a superstar band leader, but his art too has found great appreciation, with many of his works in collections throughout the world. This is definitely one of his best. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Roualt, Georges. Juge (Chapon e Rouault 289). (1871-1958) Important and significant French artist of the first half of the 20th Century. Georges Roualt captured faces of his fellow citizens on the fringes of French Society particularly those of dance hall women, prostitutes, and circus performers, specifially clowns. He also made several important paintings of judges which expressed his skepticism and criticism of the systems in place for justice. "If I have made judges such lamentable figures, it is doubtless because I betrayed the anguish which I feel at the sight of a human being who has to pass judgment on other men. The judges themselves I could not condemn."

Goldberg Auctions is pleased to offer this important work entitled "Juge" (The Judge). Ink and colors on paper. Salomoni, Tito. "Untitled Still Life". (1928 - 1989, Italian) Italian painter who embraced both traditional and surrealist art but always with a precision that made him very popular. Here a traditional approach to a still life expresses a memory of a voyage and adventure past. The nautical instruments, a map, a model of a three-masted schooner, an oil lamp, heavily completed diaries, an aged letter addressed to (actually the artist!) and a treasure likely acquired along the way, a Guanyin blanc-de-chine figurine. What amazes is the detail in each item, the wear on the book pages, the details in the ship, the precision of the map and the gleam of the porcelain. Salomoni has signed his name on the tacked note left of the map. In excellent condition painting is 27 x 20" and framed to 35½ x 27½". Estimated Value $750 - UP

Sheppard, Joseph Sherly. Untitled ("Saraghina"). (1930, still active lives in Maryland) Figurative realist painter, who has spent considerable time in both Baltimore, MD and Pietrasta, Italy. He is well known for his genre and figure works where his subjects seem to appear a bit off balance, a bit twisted in their poses giving his paintings a sense of motion and interaction not only between the characters but also those viewing. Those talents are in full display here in this oil on panel in a far more provocative work than he has ever created. The painting is officially "Untitled" but clearly their is an inspiration here from the "Saraghina" dance number in Federico Fellini's Italian film masterpiece "8½". Likely the most famous scene in the film, a group of Catholic school boys pay the town prostitute to dance "La Rumba" for them and learn their first lesson about women. This work, certainly a bit more provocative, is clearly an homage to Fellini and also set in a pre -WWII period in time based on the boys' apparel.

Sheppard's work is generally far more conservative and a bit distant, but this unique departure from his normal tone is earthy, humorous-- a ribald Dead End Kids.
Recognizing this unique work, Jonathan Shaw, renowned counter-culture opinion maker, author, and artist dubbed by Iggy Pop as "The great nightmare anti-hero of the new age" acquired this work directly from the artist in 1995 and has been in his personal collection until now.

Oil on panel, 20 x 30", framed in gilt wood to 28 x 38" signed Sheppard in lower left corner, and in superior condition. Estimated Value $10,500 - UP

Artist Unknown. "Judith Slaying Holofernes". From the Book of Judith, a parable of a valorous and beautiful widow, Judith, who is at odds with her fellow Jews for not trusting in God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors. Along with her loyal maidservant, she enters the camp of the enemy Assyrian general, Holofernes who was sent by Nebuchadnezza to occupy the countries along the seacoast of The Western World, destroy all their gods and worship Nebuchadnezza alone. Judith earns Holofernes' favor promising him information on the Israelites. After gaining his trust, one night she is allowed access to his elaborate tent and finding him drunk, she decapitates him. The Assyrians having lost their commander and leader and saving Israel. Great story but no evidence as an accurate historical telling.

Nevertheless this story is the subject of countless artistic interpretations by artists spanning centuries including many great masters including Gentileschi, Caravaggio (spectacularly Baroque) Baglione, even an Art Nouveau interpretation by Gustav Klimt. Very much in the Neoclassical period/style comes this powerful unsigned oil on canvas of some age. For over 50 years this painting hung at a estate in Tennessee, and came to us dulled from light grime and cigar smoke. Professionally cleaned and examined for issues by Centurian Fine Art Restoration here in Los Angeles, this striking work now displays beautifully, the subtleties in color and tone fully apparent. Cleaning also revealed a couple of very small areas of restoration expertly executed many decades past. Canvas measures 38½ x 29" and is framed to 46 x 36" in gilt wood. A dramatic work and a fine centerpiece for a distinct home, library or gallery. Outside shipping required. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

Unknown, Late 18th, Early 19th Century. Still Life, Flowers. Dutch floral still life paintings were a genre spanning over two centuries, with an appeal that has showed no signs of abating. These works were explosions of radiant, intensely colored blooms with sinuous foliage, massed closely together; fabulous specimens as if cultivated by a divinely inspired florist. But no one during these 200+ years could cultivated such majestic blossoms. This, of course, is the point about Dutch flower paintings: despite their breathtaking illusionism, detailing dazzling precision of individual blooms, they do not reflect reality due in no small part that many of the blossoms could not be available all at the same time. The idea was that the flowers depicted could be enjoyed by enthusiasts, long after their real-life counterparts had faded away. Implicit within this notion was the perception that earthly life is transitory and as fragile as a flower petal.

Offered is one of the finest examples of this genre Goldberg Auctions has ever offered. A monumental work having tulips, hyacinths, tree blossoms, paper whites, Summer fruit and fall foliage and grasses all in vibrant shades of whites, blues, pinks, greens, reds, tans and yellows. Painting measures 28 x 40" and is magnificently framed in gilt carved wood 39 x 50" Previous owners had the painting restored to stabilize canvas and crazing as well as the frame sparing no expense. Only the slightest evidence of restoration is visible when viewed closely. A magnificent work.

Due to size and the magnificent frame, outside shipping only. But we can recommend a fined art packing and shipping company that is reasonable and professional. Estimated Value $3,500 - UP
