Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd Superb Autographed Original Ink and Gouache Caricature, Exceptional (1888-1957) U.S. naval officer, pioneer aviator, and polar explorer best known for his explorations of Antarctica using airplanes and other modern technical resources in the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II Byrd served on the staff of the chief of naval operations and, among other duties, evaluated Pacific islands as operational sites. After World War II Byrd was placed in charge of the U.S. Navy’s Operation High Jump. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Silver Lifesaving Medal, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy Cross. Offered is a most unique autograph. A wonderful NY illustrator created an ink and gouache caricature portrait of Byrd late in life (likely early 1950's) for a newspaper and had Byrd sign it as recorded in pencil on verso, at Kaufman Drugstore Fountain, 49 St. and Lexington Ave., which enjoyed a long and storied history in NYC.
