Russian Royalty: Tsar Paul I, Tsarina Maria Fedorovna, Tsar Alexander I, and Tsar Nicholas I. Paul I (1754-1801, reigned 1796-1801), son of Catherine the Great; assassinated. Doument signed as Tsar, 1797, authorizing retirement pay to former servants. Maria Fedorovna (2nd wife of Paul I), endorsement on an 1824 petition. Alexander I (1777-1825, reigned 1801-25), son of Paul I. He ruled Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. 1810 LS as Tsar to the Emperor of Austria on the birth of his daughter. Nicholas I (1796-1855, reigned 1825-55), younger brother of Alexander I. 1830 LS to the King of the Two Sicilies. All items fine with Tsar Alexander a bit light. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP

Bernadotte, former French marshal), King of Sweden; Charles IV, King of Spain; Manuel de Godoy, Prime Minister of Spain; Maria Luisa, Queen of Spain; Christian VII, King of Denmark; Frederick VII, King of Denmark; William I, King of the Netherlands; Prince Ernest of Mechlenburg-Strelitz, Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and Sicily; Marie Caroline of Austria wife of Ferdinand IV; and Alexandre Pétion, 1st President of the Republic of Haiti. French Royalty: Includes Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis XIX, Napoleon III Signed Manuscripts. Collection of nine items, five of them signed by French kings: Louis XVI (reigned 1774-93, executed by guillotine), 1785 DS ordering payment to a soldier; Louis XVIII (reigned 1814-24), 1791 DS; Charles X (reigned 1824-30; he abdicated), 1798 DS. Louis Antoine (reigned less than 20 minutes as Louis XIX), 1817 PPDS. Napoleon III (first president of France, 1848-52, and last French monarch (1852-70), 1872 ANS written from exile in England, asking Mr. Sturgis about the new Loan of the City of New York. Also included are an LS by Louis Philippe II, duc d'Orléans; an LS by Charles Ferdinand, duc de Bérry; and an endorsement by Louis Joseph, Prince of Condé on a 1785 document with secretarial signature of Louis XVI. Additionally, two letters signed by: Pierre Louis de Blacas (sec. of state during 1st Restoration), 1814 LS; and Jean Hyde de Neuville, 1819 LS as Minister to the United States.

A British King, Two Dukes and the Royal Doctor: George V Document, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlboro and ALS by the Duke of Wellington. Fine collection of British manuscripts: 1.) George V signed license to wear the Insignia of the Third Class of the Order of the Excellent Crop to a Herber Summers, Postal Commissioner in Peking, Republic of China dated May 24th 1917. The king has signed boldly at top with document in excellent condition. 2.) Document signed by John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough circa 1700. Countersigned by James Craggs (1657-1721) as master General of the Ordnance. Churchill proved an able English soldier and notably a long lived statesman whose career spanned the reign of five monarchs. Appointment boasts beautiful calligraphy on laid paper. Condition of manuscript was received split in half and very fragile. Modest conservation was tendered to rejoin the two parts, and several other distressed areas to hold document in shape using acid-free Neschen Filmoplast paper tape on verso. Manuscript now presents well. 14 x 9½" 3.) ALS, 4½ x 7" by the Duke of Wellington as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, dated Sept. 9, 1845 from Walmer Castle and is addressed to Lady Powlett, daughter of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Excellent condition with only a tiny stain at bottom right corner tip. 4.) Sir James Reid (1849-1923) surgeon to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII signed leaf on stock paper, "Yours faithfully James Reid." Estimated Value $800 - UP

Includes George IV, an 1814 DS as Prince Regent, being a military commission for an officer of the Army of Brunswick-Luneburg; Caroline of Brunswick, an 1800 ALS as Princess of Wales to Lady Elgin re Princess Charlotte; William IV, ALS and FF as Duke of Clarence to Adm. Keith; Edward Augustus (4th son of Geo. III, Duke of Kent and father of Queen Victoria), 1818 LS and FF; Leopold II of Belgium, 1845 LS to Ferdinand II of Two Sicilies; Charlotte Augusta of Wales (wife of Leopold II and daughter of George IV), an ALS. Also includes 1812 ALS and FF signed by Adolphus Frederick (7th son of Geo. III); DS and FF by Augustus Frederick (6th son of Geo. III), and an ALS by his wife Augusta; an ALS and FF by Princess Elizabeth Mary; and an ALS in the 3rd person by Princess Sophia Matilda. All tems in fine condition. Estimated Value $800 - UP

George III--1808 DS Re Payment of Troops in Napoleonic Wars, and Charlotte Sophia ANS. Document signed "George R" as King, one page, quarto, St. James Court, Mar. 16, 1808. During the Napoleonic Wars, George III orders the Paymaster General "of our Guards Garrisons and Land Forces" to pay the Cumberland Regiment of militia for Dec. 25, 1798 to Dec. 24, 1799. On laid paper, with overall toning. Bold signature. Accompanied by an ANS by Charlotte Sophia as Queen, to Chancellor Behr, in German. Both fine. Estimated Value $600 - UP

Edward VIII -- ALS Regarding His Upcoming Investiture as Prince of Wales (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India from Jan. 20, 1936 until his abdication on Dec. 11, 1936. Autograph letter signed, "Edward" as Prince of Wales, on light gray paper, 1½pp, 8x10", folded to 8x5". Buckingham Palace, London, May 24, 1911. To Mr. Jones, thanking him for sending "the two charming prints of the Castle at Carnarvon [not present]. It interests me very much to see what it looked like long ago. I do hope that the weather will be fine for the investiture ceremony, next July. It will be very interesting." Black ink is very faint. Edward was created Prince of Wales on his sixteenth birthday, June 23, 1910, but his investiture took place on July 13, 1911. Estimated Value $400 - UP

Duke and Duchess of Windsor -- Autographed Note Card. Note card with blue embossed crowned WE monogram at top, signed in ink "Edward, Duke of Windsor," and "Wallis, Duchess of Windsor," 3½ x 5½", no place, no date. Fine condition. Laid to a page with the original transmittal envelope and the accompanying printed note from the private secretary to the Duke and Duchess. Edward (1894-1972) ascended to the British throne as Edward VIII upon the death of his father, George V, on January 20, 1936. He abdicated on December 11 of the same year in order to marry Wallis Simpson (1898-1986), an American divorcée. He was thereafter given the title "Duke of Windsor." The Windsors lived in France and remained married for 35 years, until his death in 1972. Estimated Value $250 - UP
