Lot 139
Two Exceptional, 18th Century Ethiopian Psalters with Original Hand-Sewn Leather Cases. Ethiopia is one of the oldest Christian countries, having been converted in the 4th Century by missionaries from Syria. Each 18th century handwritten religious book is written in the Ge'ez language, in black and red ink on vellum pages, approximately 6" x 7½". The script consists of the "Psalms of David" with additional commentary. One consists of approximately 135 folio leaves, the other 171 folio leaves and contains 1-132 "Psalms"; 133-144 "Songs of the Prophets and Prayers of Moses"; 145-151 "Song of Songs of Solomon"; 152-end Praise of Mary". Each book hand sewn into original wood board binding, and most written on both sides. Accompanying each book is its original, beautifully hand-sewn leather carrying case, one with strap. Condition of each is fine. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

Original Leaf From Foxe's Book of Martyrs, London, 1626. Leaf from The Third Volume of the Ecclesiasticall Historie Containing the Acts and Monuments of Martyrs, with a generall discourse of these later Persecutions, horrible Troubles and Tumults, stirred up by Romish Prelates in the Church, especially to this Realme of England and Scotland…from the time of Queene Maries entering upon the Crowne, to the Reigne of our late gracious Soveraign Queen Elizabeth of blessed Memorie. Leaf is 13 x 8¾", two columns, and is page 157, with "Q. Mary" at upper left and "Anno 1555" in the left margin. Affixed to a larger sheet with facsimile of title page.

John Foxe (1517-1587) was an English historian who became a Protestant early on and wrote an account of Christian martyrs, with an emphasis on the persecution of Protestant reformers. The book was influencial in forming British public opinion about the Catholic Church. Estimated Value $125 - UP
