Rare Original Report/Publication of The Trial Of Arthur Hodge, Esquire For The Murder of his Slave Prosper. Original First Publication in US Dated 1812. A report of the trial of Arthur Hodge, Esquire (late one of the members of His Majesty's Council for the Virgin-Islands) at the island of Tortola, on the 25th April, 1811, and adjourned to the 29th of the same month, for the murder of his Negro man slave named Prosper Created and published Middletown [Conn.] : Printed by Tertius Dunning, 1812. 186 pages all present and printed on laid paper. 7¼ x 4½" Book is in only good condition but a fine candidate for restoration or certainly can be left as is. The threads that bound the pages have all but disintegrated, separating the book in half. The front cover has also detached. Those issues aside for this 208 year old publication, the paper is strong and not at all deteriorating. The text is bold, utterly and completely legible and the pages turn easily. This trial outlines the savagery, torture and murders by slave owner Arthur Hodge on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. After years of his brutality, the British court intervened on one particularly repellent murder of a slave named Prosper who was flayed to a ghastly extreme and died from the whippings. The findings in the trial hit London with a thunderclap. Hodge was found guilty and hanged. This is the report of that most historic trial. Estimated Value $700 - UP
