Apollo 17
Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 939
Apollo 17: Collection of 3 Crew Signed Photos Also Including a Remarkable Note to Gene Cernan Prior To Flight (1927-2011) Richard "Dick" Underwood was chief engineer on the production of the first topographic maps of the moon. He was the first person to view every photograph from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and the first 23 space shuttle missions. He also provided technical training to every astronaut who went into space in the 20th Century. From his personal collection five (5) inscribed and signed photos from Apollo 17. First and most importantly a crew signed photo Gene Cernan, Jack Schmitt and Ron Evans from Apollo 11. Paper clipped to this photo was a note sent to Gene Cernan that reads:

Gene: The enclosed Photograph is not very exciting. It has never been published. I can't understand just why. For it is one of the most astounding photographs ever recorded in all of human history. It is the very FIRST photograph ever taken by a human being on the surface of the moon.
Seeing that souvenirs, etc. and the like are now bad news (likely a reference to Apollo 15 flown covers scandal) I would appreciate it if you could do me the very great favor of seeing to it that the LAST photograph taken by a human being on the moon has within its format our country's flag. Calm Seas and a Prosperous Voyage, Dick Underwood"

Lot also includes two very heartfelt individually signed photos by Jack Schmitt and Ron Evans. All pieces in excellent condition have red serial numbers. LOA from The Underwood Family. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
