1793 S-8 R3 Wreath Cent PCGS graded VF30, CAC Approved. Beautiful glossy light olive brown and chocolate with a few peeps of lighter brown toning in a couple of the protected places. The surfaces are smooth and the only mark worthy of mention is a rim nick over the second S in STATES. Evenly struck on a flawless planchet. MDS with a bisecting diagonal crack and wave across the reverse, strongest within the wreath. The date and legends are strong and this cent has outstanding eye appeal for a mid-grade 1793 Wreath Cent. Our grade is VF25. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 19 finer. 1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap PCGS graded AG3. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago but the toning is attractive and looks natural. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and the eye appeal is quite nice for a well-worn cent. The only notable marks are a faint diagonal streak of darker toning from the eye to the lower curls, a pair of tiny spots of darker toning near the rim right of the Y in LIBERTY, and a tiny rim nick over the left side of that L. The date is easily readable and LIBERTY is strong, but most of the legend on the reverse is weak. Our grade is AG3. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 13 finer. 1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS AG Detail Smoothed. Dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are covered with microscopic roughness mixed with patches of stronger corrosion. No verdigris or noted contact marks. The date is weak but all 4 digits are present and it is easily readable, and at least a quarter of the tiny stars on the reverse are still visible. The legends are all weak but most of the letters are still readable with some effort. An example that is not shown in Noyes photo project or in the Pete Smith reference. Our grade is net Fair-2+. 1794 S-56 R3 PCGS graded XF40. The so-called "Office Boy Reverse" variety because of the rather haphazard placement of many of the letters in the legend. Glossy medium chocolate brown with hints of reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and show only trivial marks. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY and a thin diagonal nick on the left side of the E in AMERICA. There are traces of microscopic loose crud on the obverse; a proper brushing should eliminate those when/if the coin is removed from the slab. LDS, Breen state III. The repunching on the A in STATES is gone and the die clashmarks are dull. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise. Perhaps that's why UNI are fully struck (many if not most of this variety have significant weakness in that area). A nice example of this popular variety. Our grade is VF25+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 8 finer. PCGS #35630. Estimated Value $3,000 - UP

1795 S-76a R5 Lettered Edge Poor-1. Glossy medium brown with smooth, uncorroded surfaces. Some of the details would grade G6 but there is a large hole in the center and many rim dents. The date is easily readable, LIBERTY is clear, and maybe a third of the elements on the reverse are clear as well. Only a small portion of the edge letters remains visible thanks to those rim dents. What makes this cent special is that it was struck over an off-center 1794 cent, possibly S-71. The fraction of the 1794 is clearly visible left of the upper part of the cap and LI from LIBERTY shows where UNI would have been located. Walter Breen mentioned in his encyclopedia that there was a report of this variety struck over a spoiled 1794 cent, but he had not seen one. A piece for the serious specialist, not a high-end registry collection. Estimated Value $300 - UP

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge PCGS XF Detail Environmental Damage. Glossy light chocolate brown blending to olive brown in protected areas. The eye appeal of this cent is quite nice but a glass reveals many small contact marks and pits plus a few areas of light roughness, especially around UNITED. No verdigris. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with minor swelling in the obverse fields and the pole is disconnected from the neck. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Our grade is VF35, sharpness net VF20. 1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS VF Detail Cleaned. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with slightly darker olive brown toning around the date. No marks or verdigris, and there is no hint this cent was ever "Cleaned" as suggested by PCGS. The surfaces look perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals uniform extremely fine roughness under the glossy toning (perhaps PCGS meant to say "Environmental Damage" rather than "Cleaned"). LDS, Breen state III, with crumbling on the profile at the mouth and a subtle bulge in the field at the lower curls. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Our grade is VF20, sharpness net F15. 1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust PCGS VF Detail Altered Surface. Very attractive glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth (not "altered" in our opinion) and the only marks are a tick under the bust tip and a pinprick near the leaf under TA in STATES. Neither mark is significant and this cent has excellent eye appeal. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II early. The crack up from the right top of the Y in LIBERTY is very light and there are no die clashmarks on either side. The date and legends are all strong. A very nice mid-grade 1796 Draped Bust Cent. 1797 S-140 R1 PCGS graded XF45. Light to medium chocolate brown blending to olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable marks or other defects, but the gloss is a bit subdued thanks to a thin layer of natural oxidation. There are traces of microscopic dirt in protected areas and it looks like this cent has never been brushed or given "TLC" of any kind. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state III. There is a long die crack near the dentils left of the date and curls and a fine die crack through AME. A very nice cent; just needs a proper bath. Our grade is VF35. PCGS #1422. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are a shallow planchet flake at the left corner of the eye and a small spot of microscopic roughness in the field close before the forehead. Traces of underlying mint frost show in the protected areas, especially on the obverse. LDS, Breen state VI, with a strong die crack through OF nearly reaching the adjacent A. This cent has some loose dirt on both sides and it appears to have never been brushed or messed with in any way. It is a new discovery, not seen by Noyes or Bland, and it appears to be the second finest behind only the marginally finer ANS example when compared to the Noyes photos. Our grade is VF35+, and it could be even higher if given a proper bath to expose the underlying mint frost. A great opportunity for the collector of superior early large cents.
