1816 N-1 R4+ PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas. There is just a touch of friction on the highpoints and a few trivial contact marks scattered over both sides. The best identifying mark is a spot of darker olive brown toning between star 6 and the tip of the coronet. M-LDS with rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a fine die crack through the top of NITED. The chin is a bit sunken, as usual for this variety. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#4, his photo #27325. Our grade is AU50. This attractive cent comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Newcomb-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #36523. Pop 1; 2 graded higher at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 63, 1 in 65. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP

1816 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS63+ Brown. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining visible, mostly on the obverse. No notable spots or stains, only a few contact marks. The notable ones are a dull nick on the neck, a thinner nick on the bust tip, and a couple nicks in the field between star 3 and the end of the nose. MDS with the usual rim cud breaks on the right side of the obverse. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents dated from 1816 to 1820. Our grade is MS60+. A tiny puff of slightly lighter toning on the lower point of star 9 can help identify this cent. MDS. The repunching at the left bottom of the N in CENT is clear and the edge is partially reeded from star 4 to star 7. A very nice cent in spite of the confusing "Altered Surface" assessment by PCGS. 1816 N-9 R3 NGC graded MS64 Brown. Choice frosty medium steel brown. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is very nice. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are two tiny ticks on the cheek, a faint diagonal hairline on the cheek, and a microscopic pin prick near the curl on the lower part of the neck. M-LDS. Traces of repunching remain visible on the 81 in the date and there is a subtle wave in the field above the back of the head. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #27520. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state, and the cent has choice mint state eye appeal. Once housed in a PCGS slab graded MS63BN (old green PCGS label #1591.63/7422172). The attribution and Mervis Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Flashy flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. This cent has great eye appeal and is void of any notable defects. LDS. The die crack from the bust tip to the dentils under star 1 is clear and a new die crack extends from the coronet tip to the dentils left of star 6. A faint hairline from the front edge of the neck to just under the earlobe and a very light rim bruise at star 10 are the only notable marks. LDS with a die crack from the bust tip to the dentils under star 1 and a bisecting reverse crack from F-A to NI in UNITED. The earlier die crack down through the first S in STATES is strong. 1817 N-3 R2 PCGS graded AU58. Frosty steel and olive brown with faint hints of reddish steel faded down from mint color in protected areas around the wreath. Satiny flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has nice eye appeal. The only defects are a mint-made planchet lamination chip on the rim at star 1 and a tiny planchet flake in the field under the end of the wreath stem. The chip at star 1 catches your eye; the flake under the stem does not. Otherwise this cent is choice and it looks mint state with just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Nicely struck MDS with a tiny lump on the top of the head where a "Mouse" break is forming and is faintly outlined (perhaps we should call this die state the "Minnie Mouse"). A neat die state and it comes with a very nice provenance. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#17 in the Noyes census, his photo #28069. Our grade is AU55. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. The only marks are a very light rim bruise above star 8 and a faint diagonal hairline scratch above CE in CENT. MDS. The always-present die crack through the base of the date is strong and a new radial crack connects that crack to the rim under the right point of star 1. 1817 N-17 R4 PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Beautiful glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty cartwheel luster shows in the protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal in spite of some tiny contact marks on otherwise smooth surfaces. The best identifying marks are a small nick on the front edge of the neck and a dull, narrow scrape on the neck under this nick. Not quite perfect but still a very important example of this tough die variety. MDS. Die cracks have raised the right arm of the first T in STATES toward the rim but the crack up from that E to the dentils above has not formed. Called EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#2 honors among the confirmed examples in the Noyes census, his photo #25240. The surfaces are smooth and this cent is quite attractive, just lightly worn on the devices. No spots or stains, only trivial contact marks. A small pinprick over the left edge of the curl at the bottom of the neck can help identify this cent. E-MDS with a fine die crack through the top of UNITED ST. A very nice example of this tough die variety, and it comes with an important provenance. Our grade is VF35+. The attribution and Jules Reiver Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. 1818 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Very attractive lustrous medium brown with delicate overtones of light bluish steel. A small area of reddish brown toning just left of star 12 and a thin horizontal nick on the chin are the only notable defects. Sharply struck EDS, before the strong, dull vertical die lines were added down through ICA and the wreath stem. The fields on both sides are smooth and slightly reflective and the dentils are sharp. The always-present die crack from ED to ST and over to F-AMERIC is clear but not strong, and this crack ends with a strong rectangular lump inside the bottom of that C. A scarce die state of a relatively common die variety. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #36616. 1818 N-9 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with hints of underlying very faded mint red, especially on the obverse. No spots or stains and only some minor contact marks including a light vertical scuff up from the left point of star 11, a small diagonal nick high on the cheek, and a short, dull scratch into the field from the lower left points of star 12. MDS. The fields are covered with fine radial flowlines and the doubling on the outer point of star 8 is lost in those flowlines. A fine die crack connects the tops of MER, but there are no rim cud breaks on either side. Strike doubling (from die bounce or "machine doubling") shows on the right side of the ear, most of LIBERTY, and on the hair behind the head and neck. Called MS60 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #25236. Bland also says MS60 but tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is MS60. This cent is plated in the 1940 Newcomb reference to illustrate the variety (Plate II, item 9-I). Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. Just a few trivial contact marks including a dull, light nick on the chin and another in the field below, plus a fine vertical hairline over star 13. EDS. The obverse fields hard and slightly reflective and a die line connects the bases of the T & E in STATES. A variety that's difficult to find in high grade, this one solidly in the condition census. Called EF45 and CC#3 among the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#6 in his census, photo #36032. Our grade is EF45.
