Lot 206
1837. No Stars. NGC graded MS-66+. This is an amazing coin. First off the quality is off the charts, coming in at MS-66+, on the cusp of the Superb level. Add to the satiny bounty of the fields an enticing circle of deep blue at the rims, fading over to rich russet then to lighter gold to the centers. Eye appeal on steroids! Last but not least is a bold and precise strike. These 1837 coins were the first appearance of Christian Gobrecht's new Liberty Seated dimes, and clearly special care was taken to make these coins magnificent, and here is one that has only grown more attractive with age and toning. Pop 3; 8 finer, 6 in 67, 2 in 67 Star. Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000

1837. No Stars. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely blue toning with reflective fields. This is the first appearance of the new Gobrecht designs for this denomination. A tiny obverse mark in the left field is old and toned over. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are fresh. This new design lasted only two short years, and by mid 1838 stars were added to the obverse. The addtion of the stars helped to protect the open fields and extend the wear patterns of the devices through prolonged years in circulation. Housed in an Early Style Holder. Pop 27; 38 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000

1850. NGC graded Proof 64. Lovely blue and gold toning with royal deep blue around the periphery which fades into russet and gold toward the centers, with bright silver frost located there. Glittering reflective mirror fields and clean surfaces. Of course the strike is absolute and bold, and this is one of just a handful struck, believed that only 4 pieces struck. A delightful example of this rare, rare proof issue and one worthy of an exceptional collection. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67. Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000

1853. No arrows. NGC graded MS-68. A prized rarity and long held as a key date issue without the arrows at date. This example is one of the absolute finest known, with a monumental MS-68 grade and incredible russet and blue toning from decades in an album. The surfaces are virtually "as struck" with no signs of handling or abuse. The devices and fields retain their full vibrancy subdued by the years of glorious toning. An amazing opportunity to buy a coin that will be a major highlight in any advanced collection.

A wonderful example. These were struck in the opening weeks of 1853, before Congress acted to reduce the silver content of coinage from the half dimes through half dollars. This was done to bring the bullion value of these pieces back below their stated coin values. The value of silver had risen dramatically in the late 1840s with the massive California Gold Rush which caused the price of gold to come down a tad compared to silver. A slight adjustment to the coins weight brought them back to circulation, but not before countless 1853 and prior dated silver coins were melted for a small profit. Hence survivors from this era are few and far between, especially ones that look like this extraordinary gem. Only 95,000 struck. Pop 5; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $12,000 - UP

1853. Arrows. NGC graded MS-67. This is a blazing bright white gem that offers a bold strike and gleeming surfaces. The strike is sharp on each of the stars and devices, and the surfaces are free of all but a few tiny ticks. As 1853 unfolded, Congress acted to stop all the silver coins being melted (they were worth about 107% of their stated face value) so most disappeared from circulation into the melting pots for the profits. To announce the reduced silver content on the half dimes and dimes, Arrows were added flanking the date, which made a statement of "do not melt me, I'm lower value" to the public. On the quarters and half dollars, glory rays were also added around the eagle on the reverse as well as the Arrows at the date. For traditions sake the silver dollar weight was not adjusted, but few were seen in circulation at the time. Here is a great Looking type coin. Pop 11; 6 finer, 1 in 67 Star, 4 in 68, 1 in 69+. Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000

1856. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Boldly struck as expected for a Proof, but this one is really sharp. Curiously all known 1856 dimes struck in proof are doubled dies, with doubling seen on the lower skirt edge and shield. The obverse and revers are bathed in lovely blue and russet toning. Only 50 pieces struck, with about 30 to 40 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. with the Cameo contrast seen here there are no more than five or six examples known, and this is one of the best seen. A rare early proof that is seldom offered and this one is near the very top of those around.Pop 5; 1 finer in 68 Cameo. Estimated Value $9,000 - UP

1866. NGC graded Proof 68. From an original proof set. Wonderful rainbow toning with deep blue on the upper left obverse fading to russet and pale silver gray on that side, the reverse lighter in toning and virtually perfect for the surface quality. It would be impossible to imagine a finer example technically or for the toning. This is one that the lucky buyer will keep forever as it simply cannot be replaced. Only 725 struck.
