Lot 1619
Great Britain. Proof Crown, 1935. S.4050; ESC-380 (R5); KM-842a. George V. Raised edge lettering, 925 silver. Obverse, portrait of king left by Bertram Mackennal (1863-1931) GEORGIVS V. D:G: BRITT: OMN: REX. F.D. IND: IMP: Reverse; Stylised St George and Dragon design by Percy Metcalfe (1895-1970) CROWN 1935 around. Edge reads DECUS ANNO REGNI ET TUTAMEN XXV in error (instead of the correct DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI XXV) in raised letters. Mint state with mirror fields and an attractive cloudy pastel tone. Excessively rare. PCGS graded Proof 64. Estimated Value $3,500 - UP
* To celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935, nearly three quarters of a million (.500) silver currency Crowns were made, all with incuse edge lettering. At the same time just 2,500 pieces were struck in silver proof with raised edge lettering, and 25 pieces were struck in gold. Some time later it was realised that a very small number of the silver 'raised edge proofs' had been struck with a major error in the edge lettering sequence. One example fetched the princely sum of £600 at Glendinings' auction in 1966, and Linecar and Stone asserted that the error coin was Rarity 7 (one or two pieces known to exist). Today it is established that just 5-10 pieces exist (Rarity 5) and the coin has a catalogue value of £5,000 (around $6,500).

Great Britain. Matte Proof Coronation Crown, 1937. S.4079; ESC-393B (R7); KM-857. George VI. Obverse, portrait of king left by T. Humphrey Paget: GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX. Reverse; Crowned arms and supporters, heraldic lion and unicorn to left and right. FID: DEF: IND: IMP surrounding. Date and denomination below. Edged grained. PCGS graded Matte Proof 66. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP
* The Norweb collection of coins (part 2, sold in November 1985) included a complete 15-coin set of matt proof silver, bronze and brass coins for the 1937 coronation of King George VI - who had ascended the throne after the eventual abdication of his brother Edward VIII in December 1936. The cataloguer pointed out that it is understood that the practice of making a small number of matt proofs, of this, and other issues, was to facilitate ease of photography at the time. Another set of matt proofs, less the Maundy money, is illustrated in the Royal Mint Report for 1935/6 (pl.A, 1-12) and Linecar and Stone record one other set of 1937 matt proofs noted in commerce. Several individual pieces have been offered for sale over the past few decades, but these are all extremely rare.

Reverse; Crowned numeral within wreath. A superb example of the rarest set of Maundy coins struck during the 20th century. With a low mintage, the 1953 Maundy pieces were often weakly struck, and many sets were split and the individual coins given to foreign dignitaries as souvenirs at the time of HM Queen's coronation. This is a superb, well struck matching set. PCGC graded 2 Pence PL 62; Penny PL 63; 3 Pence and 4 Pence PL 64. Lot of 4 coins. Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,300

Great Britain. Official Royal Mint plaster for Britain's first modern One Pound coin, issued in 1983. Elizabeth II. This master (approx. 6.5 inches diameter) features the heraldic royal arms superimposed over a garter: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE and supported by a standing lion and unicorn. DIEU ET MON DROIT on a banner below. In near perfect condition. Extremely rare, possibly unique. An important part of the UK's numismatic heritage. Estimated Value $500 - UP
* The decision to replace the old One Pound banknote with a coin was taken on 31 July 1981. The design process for Britain's first modern One Pound coin started with a competition for the reverse design. All entries were judged by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (with the Duke of Edinburgh as President). This selected design was the creation of Eric Sewell, formerly Chief Engraver to the Mint, and it was later sent to HM the Queen for approval.
