Lot 1665
1851. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. PQ. A frosty coin with a good strike and clean surfaces for the modest grade. This is a tough date to find in full mint state, as most entered circulation and stayed for a long time. Truly uncirculated examples like this are and far between. A delightful example for the date to type collector. Pop 64; 16 finer, 13 in 63, 3 in 64. (PCGS # 8904) Value $9,000 - 10,000

1851. PCGS graded AU-58. Frosty white toning on both sides. Although this is a fairly plentiful issue, in top grades like this there not many to go around for collectors. This one has a few typical scuffs from bag handling, but retains solid eye appeal and a sharp strike (PCGS # 8904) Value $2,600 - 2,700

1855-S. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. Well struck and mostly untoned. The surfaces show scattered light bag handling evidence, but nothing too deep or distracting. Hence a beautiful coin with the stylistic slanted 55 in the date from Longacre's touch with the engraving (PCGS # 8916) Value $2,900 - 3,000

1856-S. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck and frosty, with minimal signs of handling prior to being shipped to New York on that fateful trip in 1857. Slight discoloration in the right obverse fields as this coin may have had more exposure to the sea water than others from this fantastic hoard that was recovered from the depths of the Bermuda Triangle in the last generation or so. Housed in a special PCGS Foil Holder. Value $9,500 - 10,000

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. Here is a classic example of the High Relief double eagle. The surfaces are outstanding with nary a nick or bagmark to be found, even under the scrutiny of a strong loupe. The strike(s) are full and sharp, as several strikes were required to bring up the majestic depth of the designs here. Of course no modern mint (113 years ago or even today) was capable of striking such coins with enough force to bring up the designs fully in a single blow, as immense pressures were required to strike up the central and highest devices of this design. Thus each of these was struck six to eight times. Here is a magnificent near gem that will earn an honored place in any advanced collection. Only 11,250 struck (PCGS # 9135) Value $27,000 - 29,000

Lot 1697
1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64+. CAC. PQ. A coin that should be graded MS65. The obverse wire edge is very sharp as the multiple strikes required to bring up the design elements pressed the planchet hard against the collar, causing this raised thin feature around the extreme edge of the coin. Lovely light golden colors with vibrant luster and three dimensional eye appeal. The stunning beauty of these High Relief coins cannot be overstated, their elegance in hand simply satisfies the numismatic senses in a way that no other coin can accomplish.

The dies used to strike these masterpieces show considerable depth in their devices, when the dies were secured in the largest coining press at the Philadelphia Mint, these coins still required up to seven strikes to fully bring up the design elements, bringing production to a veritable crawl. Needless to say the results were exceptional, but modern coinage could not be condemmed to such an arduous process of multiple strikes for each coin destined for circulation. Efficiency won out soon enough, and Saint-Gaudens masterpiece design was greatly reduced in depth, allowing for a single strike from the dies going forward to strike the 1907 double eagles in low relief. This coins should be a MS-65 (PCGS # 9135) Value $28,000 - 30,000

Lot 1714
1920-S. PCGS graded MS-62. This is one of the rarest and most popular key date issues of the Saint-Gaudens double eagles. Only a modest number are believed to have survived the great and mass meltings of the FDR administration when gold was called in from circulation in March of 1933.

With the unimaginable costs of the new social programs adopted by the Roosevelt administration (1933), the inflation needed to sneak these through the public required a "temporary" farewell to the golden anchor that reflects the true cost of such folly. Apparently most of the orignal mintage of 1920-S double eagles were tied up in Treasury vaults and never had a chance to circulate. Thankfully for collectors today, about a gross of these coins did escape, many in high grade but precious few when one considers how many were struck. Today only 100 to 150 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report and this one is nice and frosty. The vast majority never entered circulation but instead were shipped off to Fort Knox to be re-cast into bars awaiting their next fate. Pop 18; 31 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9171) Value $50,000 - 55,000
